LF Games with a Skill System

VGTheoryVGTheory Member Posts: 110

I like the skills system of Entropia Universe, and somewhat what is used in FFXI.  I'm having trouble finding a MMO, free or otherwise, other than these two that use something like it.

Basically, you get better at a skill by using it.  In EU, there is no cap to it, but it requires real money to play (and I've tried the "no pay" methods and they are untennable for me), but has almost the ideal system for me.

Any suggestions?

Darkfall is like that but it have monthly fees.

I can't really think of an acceptable game that is free and uses skill mechanics.

Free or pay isn't an issue.  Any non MMOs are also acceptable if you know of any.  Elder Scrolls series is the only ones I can think of.

Ultima Online is one of the original and best in my opinion. Darkfall and Mortal Online also use a skill system with no type of class or levels.

    Runescape OR Mabinogi.

They are different in that Runescape is a classic fantasy setting, and more of a grind while Mabinogi is more of an Anime/Fantasy/Steampunk(?) setting with its grind well disguised by dungeons, missions, and events.

Mortal online? You just have to wait month ot two so most critical issues with expansion are fixed. There is no better sandbox game on the market currently.

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

I'd second Mortal Online.  They just put out their first expansion a few days ago, so are working out the kinks, but it's a very good skill based game, in my opinion, and continues to improve.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

These are good options for Freebies.  Seems most people forget them.  Megaten is fun, but been a while since I played it.  The combat is really similar to Mabinogi and I believe your skills get better with use.

it depends what else you want to do - if you dont mind doing mostly other things then combat, i would say try wurm online or haven & hearth.

Oh yes! Good job remembering megaten. It's a lot like mabi, although in a world full of foreign MMOs with poor translation, this one is on the engrish side of the spectrum. I can't really understand the dialog or quest text all that well.
