It is not illegal and every online game I ever purchased had disclaimers about the possibility of change to the game without notice. You are responsible for how you spend your money, even if you choose to blame others.
You pay what you get. If you want free games that are lower quility then go do so. Pay to play are for higher quility games that have plans for a huge player base so they can
1. pay for the people to create more content, fix bugs, and so on.
2. pay for servers. It costs money to have that many people on a game at once. Blizzard probably spends millions each year just to keep the servers they run up.
Yes its true that most games are lacking in good content now adays. But think of it this way. You spend $40 bucks to buy a game and get to play it a month. Thats $20 bucks less than a new game that you will beat the same day. I rather spend a month in a game for $40 bucks then spend $60 in something i beat the same day or the same week at least. Not many games have the replayablitity like WoW does so paying $10 bucks a month to play WoW isnt bad when you figure you would have spent about $200 trying to get the same hours you would have spent in WoW on different games. Think of it like that.
HAHAHAHA, marvelous what you can read on the forums these days...
Not worth arguing but, realy worth laughing about.
Sorry i just felt for all these people who are hyped by the release of SWTOR for example, because unless im totally wrong, there is going to be the same kind of gaming experience that i got from the four games i listed. The same type of experience that is famous for the four games i chose from other game players of these games.
Rift is apparently ia shite game lol they have come out with patches on a scale ive never seen for a mmo before but these were still upsetting a huge mass of players. Its because they feel they have a right to a certain type of game ! Maybe because they have to pay each month for the experience ? I dont see this happening in free to play games ????? Explain that ?
I had an amazing experience with Rift apart from the game destroyers spoiling it every 5 seconds It is the best themepark mmo ive played right from the beginning of the 7 day headstart ! Its not the same for a ton of players who left and have been bitching on nealry every single thing you could possibly think of and more ! seriously it was beyond a joke what was going on in Rift. Rift is a great thmepark mmo, really good fun to play, not a thing to complain about id say it was pretty much polished mostly !

I could just buy STWOR and be forced to try get to max level before the first month is up. I could commit hours and hours to it to get it done as quickly as possible like some doo. There is possibly going to be about 100-150 hours worth of gaming on one character with SWTOR. This is a huge amount of gaming time for the money compared to say most single player games which offer between 5-20 hours in total. So yes your point is right.

Well you dont have to worry about it. Dont play the game if you dont want to. Most people though are going to spend a couple years playing it so im fine with it. They already stated that have at least 7-9 months of content for 20-30 hours a week gameplay. So 7-9 months if they dont add more content or make alts. Making alts is something i love to do so im guessing i have a couple years at least to enjoy the story of each and every character. And if you life Rift then play Rift. What is holding you back? There are still tons of people on the game. I bet there are higher end guilds getting all the loot they want.

You. What? Make up your mind. In that first paragraph you spell the doom of Rift, yet in the second one you talk about how it was a great game with polish.
If you think Rift had a bad start and tons of patches to fix problems, you must be new to the MMO scene. Rift was one of the better game launches I've seen in a long time. Most of the patches were to fix minor bugs, or to actually ADD content.
If I had only played and payed a subscription for the 4 games you mentioned AoC,FF14,APB,Rift I would agree with you.I tried 3 of them (not APB just not my type of game and will never work as an mmo imop) unfortunatly they are crap so you are entitled to think that way.

With APB, i got it from my birthday from my sister. She has five kids to feed and I appreciated her buying this game for me. I played 5 hours of the 20 or 40 hours that was included with that game until one day, about 50 days into it being released they stopped running the game with no way to play or get a refund.
Thats a bit shit and surely is a dodgy way to be dealing your mmos ?
WooooooW so your telling me because 14,aoc,apb,and i guess rift tho rift has hardly lost any player base, these all diminished because of their pay style. NOT the horrible content, the lag, the bots, the lack of content, the repition and the overall lack of quality a AAA title should come prestandard with. NONE of that had to do with why these games died. Square fired the entire FF14 staff because of it P2P style which BTW no one has had to pay for it yet. And APB went down because of its P2P modle not because the devs never balanced anything and then went bankrupt. Seriously think before you post if it didnt work WoW and FFXI wouldnt be kickin still.
In 2010, an article cited development costs for SWToR at $60-$80 million. That's a lot of box sales.
Admittedly, in an honest court (good luck finding one), a company that enters into a contract with customers intending to deceive those customers cannot hide behind the fine print (at least not once they mange to get the case to court). But it's much more likely the investors are the ones risking getting ripped off. If a company got backing for a multi-million dollar project by promising investors a return over a long period of time and then deliberately creates a game that will fold shortly after launch (presumably while paying themselves fat salaries and bonuses all the while), then the investors can sue. If they can prove it. Again, good luck with that.
All this basic legal stuff is available to anyone bored enough to google it. As to how unethical companies often do get away with ripping off investors and customers while remaining within the letter of the law, you'll have to dig deeper. Check out mediation and jurisdiction for a start. Suing these guys is almost never worth it.

Whatsa really funny is there was people looking out for faults !! What you just posted to me where things i never recognized, like for example take rift, i remember the goblins piling up in the fire in one of the rifts, and sometimes very rarely the rift would bug. Thats about all i noticed but it was hardly a hindereance ?? i mean the way you guys were going on about the faults it was like you were going out your way to do anything possible to prove you was right. About 4 weeks ago and for a while, there was non stop posts on rift forums for every single thing possible that there could be a fualt with. Heres one for example that was mentioned a few times.
"I hate getting knocked off my mount by mobs tons of levels lower than me its highly annoying "
My response to this , ok like what ? Time to go see this for myself...
Next time im in low level area ie silverwood i take my mount and go running around the zone. Hardly ever got knocked off my mount because the distance at which the mob becomes aggressive is lowered . So in theory these posts were just bullshit. One answer was though that a faster mount helps to avoid getting knocked off your mount, but really the act was if your a higher level like 40-50 or whatever, if you go into a low zone in rift, the distance at which you get agrro from the mobs has been decreased and by quite a huge bit too.
The forums had tons and tons of posts wfor weeks for every single thing you could think about, that apprently warrented complaining so much that they had to leave the game because it was rotten to the core lol Rift ! from the 7 day headstart was the most stable game ive probably played in my entire mmo history. Still people found hundreds of hundreds of things worth unsubbing for , it was just crazy !
I bet you was one of those peiople ? I noticed fire goblins piling up in the rifts and them bugging, oh and i remember the lag from the first world event, yes this was unexplainable but still i do not find myself seriously hurt by this like some peopel ? like a ton of people !!!! These issues i faced i accepted ass not bad. Ive experienced far worse in SWG to the point i did lose it but even though SWG had all those faults in the end, it was still my favourite game to date out of all mmos. Only swg did i lose my rag, the rest of my mmo experience has been fun and this cannot be said by the masses of people posting on forums in new games that have recently been released, that are pay to play !!!

I would argue that the MMO's that decline after launch are still playable, though you may have to switch servers, re-roll or what have you to make sure you are on the more heavily populated ones.
I hear in Rift there are stil several servers with queues, why do people put up with them, because they like a heavily populated server.
You can do the same in almost any MMO that has at least a pulse and still play.
MMO's don't need a million people to be healthy, look at EVE, doing fine with no more than 60K people online at a time.

Let me guess OP, if you go to see a sporting event live and your team loses you demand your money back because they didn't provide that winning experience you expected?

haters are gana hate, this does not mean they left the game for it P2P model.
OP there is a flaw with your reasoning. You list a bunch of games that went P2P and basically failed. You then conclude that P2P is a poor model.
But what you fail to mention is that the most popular MMORPG, WoW, is also P2P! How can P2P be a failed business model when the most popular MMORPG game is P2P and is absolutely dominating the market?
If there's any reason why other P2P games fail, it's just that they can't compete with WoW.
For all those interested, here is a look today of the general section of the forums for Forsaken world, a free to play option to buy mmo game released reecently.
Now compare that to rifts forums about 4 weeks ago when i last looked !!!! hardly any complaining if any !
This i think is typical for free to play games or games with the guild wars model of buy the game and never have to pay monthly fee again.
so... money is the route of al evil. thus people argue because they are paying a sub? are you mad?
also illigal? have you lost your marbles sir
Im just saying that perhaps because of the way the pay to play model works, that peopkle are influenced by its workings. This would possibly explain the way many of the pay to play games have worked out . They seem to have formed simillar patterns of people saying games are rubbish and not worth playing , because in fact they have to keep paying to play more. With free to play people have the right ot pay and play when they want to. this means they dont really have a personal right to attack a game becuase in essence it doesnt have to cost them anything, especially every month.#
im saying it could be considered illegal to keep selling a game model to people about a MMO that forces certain game hindreances after the first few wqeeks and that after a month, such as low population appearing causing mmo things in a game to not function such as grouping for example as was shown in rift. Whats the legal aspect of selling a mmo game to someone that is supposed to be designed to keep the palyer enjoying the game for months with the known history of other simillar games showing that the game becomes uncomfortable to play after only the first month ?
Maybe the pay to play model isnt working for this generation of mmo players, bedcause if you look at othr pay to play models you see that very simillar things are happening in each of these games, which is causing big problems for the games concerned. Why has final fantasy 14 failed so bad ? i mean I payed £50 for a game and i enjoyed it but therew was this crowd who did not like there attempt at making a brand new mmo style of play ! I mean this is what i used to adore about mmos, the constant differences between each game as it came to you. People today hate originality especially if they think it fails the game !
Final fantasy 14 offered you only 16 quests per day for the lower levels this was tuff because it meant only 16 quests before you had to grind. This to me was an original way to play an mmo which i hadnt seen in other games, it meant everyone was forced to do simillar amounts of quests together and those who got ahead in game were those who spent the rest of the day grinding there professions. People of today dont like grinding they need quests too ! Final fantasy 14 is sitting on my shelve, looking sorry for itself after a mass attack by players who didnt like what they were getting. I cantget the proper mmo experience out of final fantasy 14 now because there is not enough people in game to make it work as a mmo. That to me is ok, but really what was wrong with the model it was an attempt at something new ??
As soon as you get to level 20 or so you start to find that these 16 quests required you to spend more time than half an hour on each quest, I was aware that some quests would take 5 hours to complete ! Those who started the game didnt even know this about later level quests and they totally destroyed the game because the 16 quests they was getting at lower levels was going past too quickly which is fair enough if you dont like the grinding. Why could the player base just not accept that maybe the lower level quests could be increased or something ? They had to wipe out the game because they had paid a huge chunk to getthe game plus also were expected to pay every month for the experience as well. If it was a free to play game people wouldnt have that power to destroy a game because it is given to them for free with option to pay instead.

Thats my point and i think its illegal for companies insisting on me paying for a game up front with a sub option when most times im leaving after the first month or second.
I'm thinking the whole measure of this thread can be summed up as the old "I want to play some games for free, and it should be illegal for companies to charge me to play them."
Think of buying into MMOs as an investment and a gamble. You're investing into game that you'll be playing for months, even years. You're also gambling that the company will be profitable enough to maintain the game, which in some cases they won't be.
I find your post strange and somewhat silly. The legality has nothing to do with it. If your opinion is that the P2P business model should be illegal, that's something else. In that case, we disagree. I find the F2P model highly suspicous and I really dislike the way the build their concept around luring people into their games with words like "free" and then you might end up paying more for a crappier game than you would with the P2P/B2P.
And lastly, you base your arguments around games you concider crappy and hold them up as evidence that the P2P model is fundamentally flawed and should be illegal. Well, have you heard about a lil game called World of Warcraft? I hear it's not doing so bad, although they have been growing a little thin in their ranks lately. Gone down to 11.4 million subs.
Simply... dont buy the game till you free-trial it or beta and see if u like it or not.. thats why i dont waste money on games till i think its worth the $$ to get to enterain myself than laboring myself to have fun.
As for free to play game with cash shop is worst case sccenario if you want to compete with other people. In another word, who spend the most = best.
Also keep in mind... some company rushes the product to put on shelves to make some buck. Thus has no free-trial, beta and such, thats another story. Which should be illegal.

For all those interested, here is a look today of the general section of the forums for Forsaken world, a free to play option to buy mmo game released reecently.
http://fw-forum.perfectworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=75
Now compare that to rifts forums about 4 weeks ago when i last looked !!!! hardly any complaining if any !
This i think is typical for free to play games or games with the guild wars model of buy the game and never have to pay monthly fee again.

so... money is the route of al evil. thus people argue because they are paying a sub? are you mad?
also illigal? have you lost your marbles sir

If you want to bitch about paying a sub cost, be glad you didn't play during the age of the AOL text based games . . .
haters are gana hate, this does not mean they left the game for it P2P model.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

You know, every time I manage to scrub my brain of those memories, someone brings them up on these forums and they come right back. My dead wallet thanks you.
@ OP
