Early last week, Japanese games publisher, Gamepot, announced that it was reviving the Wizardry series in the form of Wizardry Online. The game is scheduled to hit beta in North America and Europe later this summer. Check out MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller's report on the E3 Wizardry Online presentation.

The game will be free to play and give players easy access to a new party system as well as PvP. These features will be combined for the classic game play that is Wizardy. Don’t let the name fool you, there are several classes in Wizardy that are playable and gamers will enjoy the breakdown.

Wizardry was a really great series, one of the genre-defining CRPGs, so I hope the MMORPG can do it justice. Really wouldn't want to see it done as a JRPG though...fingers crossed!

I remember owning one of the Wizardry games on the PS2.  It was a big change from what I was used too and I lost track of my copy (I think I may have traded it in some years ago, unfortunately).  I fondly remember the game despite it being frustrating at the time, and I'm looking forward to what happens with this Wizardry Online setup.  Here's hoping for something grand.

New Wizardry games have been published in Japan for quite some time now. Other than the Anime artwork, they are pretty much like the Western ones.

I agree.. I never really considered the playstation wizardry game released part of the series because it didn't follow the storyline in any way.

Sadly I'm betting they will try to base a MMO they release of the wizardry series off that spin off.

Yeap. The core gameplay remains faithful to the original series. Been playing Lost Souls the past week and I'm happy to see that  the game is still very noticably a Wizardry game.

Its good that they are actually reviving such an epic old series. If and when released in NAmerica , you can catch me playing this, for sure.

It would be fun if they added party on party PvP in wizardry.. that would definitly catch my attention.

I know some of the old wizardry games had that.. you only had a chance to be revived and if it failed your character and all its stuff was gone..

Also characters aged grew old and passed away.

Are they actually implementing things like this in the new game?

Wouldn't that be neat if they introduced aging in all mmo's?  Maybe like dog years.  Five years after start a game you are now 35 years older with changed stats to reflect that (more wisdom and less everthing else <g>).

I think it could work out well.. if they designed a game to where people wouldn't get so attached to characters and items

but at the same time make the fun come from the experience of leveling new characters and rerolling.. maybe have some sort of "family" heritage passed down like a few heirlooms or special items

but I think that would do a lot to remove the metagamers from a mmo.

There would always be a vibrant low level community.. thats where i usually have the most fun in an mmo anyways... at the starter levels.
