No friendly mmo communities anymore?

McGamerMcGamer Member UncommonPosts: 1,073

Seems the days of helpful and friendly mmo communities have gone the way of the dinosaurs. Just last night I was in-game, got ganked by a griefer. When i posted in another channel to give a courtesy headsup about the griefer, I was flamed by the majority of the channel as well as the griefer himself and told I was whining? lol.

I have been searching lately for a game that isn't quite as full of selfish and vulgar gamers, but more and more it's looking like I may have to switch back to console games. A lot of gamers these days seem hung up on getting their kicks out of flaming others, griefing, and satisfying their own needs.

Typically, I like sandbox type games that are soloable and a decent crafting system. I say soloable because between raising my son and college, my online time is random and people dont usually like it when someone has to drop mid-quest.

I am open to suggestions on a good mmo community though that hasnt totally gone to the dogs.

Try LOTRO , mostly PVE game and easy going with 90% soloable quests .

We civilized folk are still about...obversing the chaos. I'm afraid you'll only find a worse community waiting for you over at the console end. There aren't many good sandbox games worth playing, but as far as good communities go, I've had some luck with Guild Wars, though I'm playing totally solo at the moment.

LOTRO is certainly reknowned for its helpful community and yes most of that has survived the f2p switch and influx of new members. i assume, from your description of yourself, that you understand there will always be a % of any population that is full of douchebaggery. LOTRO has that now in a larger % than pre f2p, but only b/c the population size grew as well.

my other suggestion is of course my flagship and game 'home' Vanguard. the key to socializing in Vanguard is to find a guild with hours that coincide with yours or enough members that it doesn't matter. currently Twilyghte Song is the newbie guild so has plenty of members. also regional chat can be quite helpful and friendly. if you see ppl haranguing each other, its b/c theyve been playing together so long. also, if you dont receive an answer its often b/c most players have endgame level characters and are raiding with their other channels either ignored or turned off. other than that given a bit of time someone will answer you and help.

i have also, for the most part, had quite good experiences in EQ2.

other than those three i quite honestly haven't found a game with either:

    a) a community that has active regional/world chat. (although even some of those quiet games have very helpful and friendly people when you ask a question. they're just not chatty in /general.)

    b) when the chat is active its more like the experience you describe.

"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

    Hey Czanrei, all,

I have never seen a more friendly community (in a sandbox game) than Ryzom (previously: Saga of Ryzom). 200 persons in a PvP battle and never *one* unfriendly word. Unique. Plus the game is kind of fun to figure out at least; even if content is restricted the world is quite nice, the make-your-own-skills is highly amusing, and the whole try-not-to-get-blown-up-while-you-craft is hilarious and also rather important. Crafting is essential in the game.

The other one I would mention is CoX. Basically because it has a pretty (some douche included :p) friendly community, most anyone has 10 (I have 16) ALTS that they switch too whenever needed, it is not sandbox but you *can* explore your heart out and the Missions are very diverse (player made content; thousands of missions too although I would wait with that) and you can always do something useful, even in 10 minutes (gathering some badges for your SG, or for your own Accolades for instance). Apart from that, combat is highly innovative and as you can set difficulty levels *and* the game auto-adjusts to your team/group/party scale, you will spend virtually no time LFG.

Just set aside any sane person's innate aversion to SupahHeroes and you're in for a world of fun. Accept that Ryzom has un-synced combat movements and you have 2 worlds :).

    Have fun,

    Lucas
