I love PC gaming and wish it was here to stay forever but sadly I think eventually it will meet it's demise or becomes so much of niche market that it's hardly a market at all.
The reason I think this? It all comes down to cost, as we all know it costs quite a chunk of cash to make even a decent gaming rig when compared to even the most expensive console. We can all argue that PCs have more functionality but I can buy a decent laptop for all my pc usage, and a console for less than I would spend on a new gaming rig, plus the laptop is portable. Next upgrading costs a bit too and if you're like I used to be you can spend thousands of dollars on upgrades in the years between console generations.
Do I like this? Not at all but it seems that it's the way things are going. PC used to have the market on multiple genres, now we basically have 2 RTS and MMOs. We used to have the market on FPS but that's been slowly going down the drain. With releases like FFXI, DCUO, FFXIV we know it's possible for MMOs too. Even so, I don't think it's possible for every game right now but I think whenever we get a new generation of consoles that could easily change just like how this last generation has swallowed up a lot of the FPS genre.
With that said I really hope I'm wrong.
i lol at this one pc games ant going no were i mean consles you break em and cant fix em like pc have to spend money to send it back and wait 2 3 weeks to get xbox and when you get it fixed breaks again............................. i think pc way better because A you can fix it yourself :Pi love my pc runs better then xbox 360 and ps3 and its really fast and i did not break a boat to spend money on it to build it:P. if you all think pc gaming is going to die go ahead thing that remeber pcs were here first before consles came out .
Do you think that if you make a sentence that never ends for an entire paragraph and is littered with grammatical errors and emotes that it will come off as convincing and not just sad desperation?
Truth is, PC gaming has been dying for quite a while. Almost all profits are made on consoles now due to piracy, outside of the MMO genre, and a few niche games that don't work well using gamepads. But as developers adapt to these programming environments, eventually everything will be available on consoles, and there will be very little reason to fully support moduler hardware based environments. The quality assurance is too costly, and the profit margin too low.
Eventually a console with download and online-authenticated gaming, where it prevents reselling games, renting games, and pirating games, will become the standard, because it will maximize profits. A PC can never do this, because it's strength in it's flexibility is it's weakness in the gaming industry. MMOs are protected because you can't pirate a subscription to WoW, but they can't keep PC gaming afloat, and as video cards continue to rocket up in pricing, with new offerings every year or so that make previous cards dated and obsolete, few people are really going to commit themselves to that platform in the coming years.
I have to admit I kind of LOLed at your response to my argument shinobi. I also love PC gaming and I love my PC and all the great things that come with it, for years I didn't even bother with consoles. At the same I realize that things don't always stay the way they are and eventually if trends keep continuing like they are, PC games will end up becoming a very small part of the gaming market share. As of right now it already is smaller then it was even just a few years ago.
Developers are making games that people will buy and play. Right now the only games thet are exclusively PC are RTS and MMOs. MMOs are just starting to move into consoles so I think it's just the beginning. Yet you're forgetting that ten years ago there were hardly any quality FPS games on consoles. Now? FPS games are designed for consoled as ported to PC, when it used to be the other way around. The thing that did it was online capabilities with consoles, before consoles could use the internet PC still remained supreme for FPS.
If things continue this way it's only going to start happening in MMOs too. In all honesty I think the only genre that's really going to be able to hold onto the PC market is RTS games and they are even less graphically intense then MMOs.
I hate to say it but this argument sort of reminds me of the arcade arguments that took place all those years ago. Now what is left in arcades? Racing games, shooting game, and ticket collecting games? I haven't been to an arcade in years that reminded me of the arcades I used to go to in the early 90s. That used to be where games were released and then later we got to play them at home.
You can blame social networking for the state and future of gaming today, add to this smartphone app games and it gets even more grim.
Think about it, you have a company like Zynga (farmville, mafia wars) that through facebook has recently surpassed Electronic Arts in dollar value. Companies like Rovio, with Angry Birds, generating millions from ad revenue for a mindless entertaining game with the gamplay of an 8 bit console and IT'S FREE!
Don't be surprised if you see gaming companies devoting entire resources and divisions to this "new" housewife gaming model.
Personally for me it is the enless hyping of games, companies will start promoting a game that won't be out for 2-3-5+ years... I mean most of us are foaming for games like GW2, TOR, Diablo3, TERA, TSW, or whatever the next big thing is... but they are all still a long ways off.. meanwhile these "housewife games" are coming out in droves and making barrels of money.
Additionally, The whole state of the industry is changing due to it's customer base... People are demaning all this inovation and critiquing everything that is coming out.. meanwhile the developers of these companies have a boss to report to and that boss doesn't give a rats ass about "is this game inovative or fun" they are looking at the bottom line... Long lost are the days where developers were passionate about a product and believed in a game, they have either sold out or vanished... The only saving grace is the indy developers but they get torn apart by the masses because they game they made is dated looking and isn't as sparkly as the polished turd that a AAA company just crapped out, or have ridiculous expectations comparing newly released games content to those that have been out for a few years.
Not only does the industry need to change but so does it's customers. MMORPGers and CRPGers are really the minority now, and trying to "speak with your wallet" is no longer viable... not when companies can make millions for making free games... really your $15 a month won't be missed, and when the board of directors start talking about "taking the company in a new direction" you can thank your $.50 a day protests for helping them make their decision easier... In five years we'll all be playing Farmville 4 and anxiously awaiting Angry Birds 8 on Facebook 2.0!
how exactly do you figure that sc2 is imba? even for people at pro level its hard to tell what is imba, the game is situational. i play random and i'm only in diamond but i don't have any judgment on if its imbalanced or not, i don't play enough to tell that. pros like Idra claim it is imbalanced but every one knows he has bm and likes to rage. lots of people that play came from SC orig so they kind of have a large advantage over new players. things like multitasking and micro/macro take time to learn. sorry you aren't enjoying it.
I played the original StarCraft and there are a lot of problems with the sequel regarding every aspect of it. I finished the single-player campaign in about a days worth of lackadaisical play and got a bunch of "achievements". I also managed to get in and stay at the top/second tiers of the multiplayer as solo and team. The most damning aspect of SC2 is that it gets really old, really fast. I haven't played SC2 in months and months and I haven't even had the urge or desire to play after seeing the HoS ad, which means I genuinely do not even have a spark of interest smoldering in the back of my mind.
Going back to the main topic at hand, why would you focus on PC exclusive games? Of course when you narrow the parameters like that you are going to have a smaller subsection. I just have no idea why you'd ignore multi-platform games.

A couple of things here. Farmville isn't in the same category as BioShock, different desires and criteria are being met. For that same reason, a company wouldn't and couldn't kill either of those demands so there is incentive to appease both - not one or the other. Warcraft and Call of Duty aren't going anywhere soon.
As for the real games taking so long to develop, yeah that is a serious fucking problem but it is their problem and something they can solve. For example, there is not a good reason why Blizzard takes ten or more years to produce a game. There simply ISN'T.

In the 80s anyone with a little talent and brain could make their own game in their cellar. Today it takes huge teams and loads of dollars. The only good news lately is Minecraft, I hope it is the start of a new golden age but I wont hold my breath...
In general PC Gaming is getting bad for example the reason MMO Genere is going down the drain is because of all these Micro Transaction games, Nexon, Perfect World for example suck at marketing games, and are games I will never play, yet companies like Gamers First who takes over All Points Bulletin can think about nothing such as fun but just about money they can get into their pockets, ruin the game play, and charge $40 for an outdated gun 2 months later want another $40 for a 3 slot perm gun when they could for example sell you one that you like 3 slots your own customizations for even $50 perm weapon but want to milk its customers dry.

General PC Gaming like, Brink, Duke Nukem Forever, Dragon Age 2, and Mass Effect 2 Suck, let alone Hutned The Demons Forge, let me give my reasons to why.
1. Duke Nukem Forever feels out of place compared to the series I first played it just really doesn't feel right and the game itself is only like 5 gigs of data from the copy my friend gave me to play, and who would pay $ 50 for a game like this I dont understand.
2. Dragon Age Origins was a decent game with sad endings on some, I admit it was good, but Dragon Age 2 seemed more like a let down never played but based on the movies and such the game play, and UI was changed I really didn't like what I saw compared to Dragon Age 1.
3. Mass Effect 2 had too short of game play, and was only like maybe 10 missions, or 20 max until you reach the end, and to me I wouldn't pay $50 for this game.
4. Hunted The Demons Forge, Was decent, but I wont pay $50 for this game again the game itself was a short ending within 15 hours game play if not less you can actually beat the entire game even on hard mode it is too easy, and the science fiction ending where a rat simply gets the evil into it, or one of you kills another with no what happend next just totally sucks.
5. World OF Warcraft, I quit the game simply because they made way too many changes to the game, the UI itself sucks, and should offer more, and there are better games now, I mean I like the old talent system, new one is crap, and the way they keep changing the story around I can't play anymore.
6. Brink No Female Characters, Simply put they have lame excuses to why they couldn't add them.
7. Global Agenda is a decent P2P/ F2P game, but the only problem is that they now make you pay for character customization with Extra money beyond your booster packs, I will not play a game until they revert the main part of the game.
8. Red Faction Armageddon was a Disappointment, I played the whole game all the way through on the hardest mode, The middle of the game was just disappointing when Kara dies why did she die, and what became of her, not to mention only 8 hours of game play, and a Generic Science Fiction ending, yet they used sounds from some movies on the syfy channel for some of their guns as well This game is not worth $50, Oh wait the developers gave us Nanite Repair Guns to rebuild destroyed stuff by using a simple Alpha/Phantom Scripting which is very simple to do, and really isn't new technology to the gaming industry meh.
What can I say, Never buy a game before you try it, All I can say is there are many places you can find your games for FREE on the internet, even some game companies like Duke Nukem Forever have a free trial, or if you have a friend with the game ask them to let you play it, Never spend any money on a game before you have tried it, I have learned it the hard way, and learned the hard way that MMO developers as well are just looking to get Rich quick, they don't care about fun, and what its customers want, Take Nexon, and NC Soft for example, Greed has killed Vindictus, and Aion besides their game development mistakes.
and you are right the game industry as we know it today is on its decline we need developers with Skill that can make our games fun for PC, and MMO games. Here is a question you have to ask yourself, Does it have to be a MMORPG to be a fun game?
The answer to that is no, you can use a lobby server, and make it an arena based CO-OP/PVP Game and it can be just as fun as long as it has voice chat, and possibly 3d Lobby with customization, yup could be a good game.
I know it is all about preference but man there just haven't been any good exclusive pc games in awhile. Lately I have been playing Dragon Age,Torchlight and Borderlands on the 360. I do play Starcraft 2 on my pc but that game is so out of balance it is getting pretty bad. I wish there was an a great pc game exclusive coming our way but it is not looking good right now.
Borderlands, Torchlight and Dragon Age are not games I would touch with a stick on Xbox. They run like crap. Those games are meant to be played on PC. As far as I am concerned they are exclusive. Steam > infinity more than Xbox Live.
Secondly, do you think more exclusive stuff is coming to 360? Outside Gears of War 3, and a bunch of Kinect shovelware, there is nothing exclusive that is not also coming to every other platform. That's the thing. There are few exclusives left.
Then it's good that most games are much better on PC!
Also good PC exclusive games are coming out. Ever heard of Shogun 2 Total War? Game is off the chain! Soon Sims Medieval and Battlefield 4 Free too:)
Just because your in your personal denial about the 3 games listed doesnt mean they are bad on the Xbox, nor that they "run like crap". I prefer Dragon Age on the 360 because I dont use the RTS view/controls even on PC. Gaming consoles are just computers with pre-loaded hardware and software, even though you think your on a good side defending your PC and all that crap the truth is we are all gamers and we all want great games.
PC players always act like console players are the bad guys, I play both because they are both fun. We are in a RECESSION, PC games do not make money like 360 games, you think Call of Duty would sell near as much if it was PC only? Are you gonna run these companies with your pocket money?
Truth is, PC gaming has been dying for quite a while. Almost all profits are made on consoles now due to piracy,
I really don't think PC gaming is going to die, but I do know it's not in the best of shape. I read your entire post, but I just wanted to comment specifically on this.
The idea that it is piracy that's driving companies from PC gaming needs to go away. This whole hacking situation with Sony started because they spent and did so many things in an attempt to stop piracy on the PS3 (GeoHotz, removing of the Linux support, etc). Nintendo took away backwards compatibility from the DS when they pushed the DSi to try and stop the rampant piracy on that handheld (and filed a lawsuit), and I think the only people that couldn't mod and pirate on their Wii are the casual and family gamers who probably can't pirate on the PC either. For 360 (and all the consoles, really), you can go to your craigslist and I gaurantee you'll easily find someone willing to mod your console on the cheap.
Really, piracy is a very serious problem on EVERY platform, and at least Nintendo and Sony are spending a very good bit of money trying to stop it. People also need to count that publishers are paying designers a good bit of money for ways to combat the used game market. As for your prediction of the online requirement, we'll see how that pans out as we definitely know it doesn't work on the PC market.

Brink, RF Armaggedon, Mass Effect series, Dragon Age II and Hunted are all multiplatform games that were only ported to PC: Brink, Hunted and RF Armaggedon are just generally this (though Hunted is an especially bad port); the Mass Effect series was designed to be primarily a 360 franchise (ME1 PC version was originally not even considered) and - while that has obviously changed now - still keeps its roots in consoles; Dragon Age II featured Mike Laidlaw as THE Lead Designer (you'll know him as the Jade Empire guy - and he was the Lead Designer for the console ports ONLY for DA:O), a guy who's heart is so into consoles that the PC exclusive features from DA:O were completely cut from DA2. I don't know about DNF as I haven't played it yet or looked too far into it, and I have no comment on your MMO thoughts.
Lots of developers and publishers have been making games for the consoles (most of them are created primarily on 360 for various reasons that are not about favoritism) and are then simply ported to PC as is (ported to PS3 as well, which is why a very good number of mutliplat games end up performing slightly worse on the PS3 than 360) thinking that's enough. But as the sales will tell you, it is most definitely not enough.
On the flip side, games created primarily for PC (Starcraft 2, Shogun, Torchlight, Witcher 2, Dragon Age: Origins, etc) end up selling very successfully on the platform. Sure, they don't get CoD/WoW numbers, but then most games - wether PC or consoles - don't.
PC game sales charts are quite high if you think of what's being said in this thread and what's in reality.
No it's not making as much money as consoles but it's a different animal, modding adds a great value to the games and people do it for free. Case in point: Oblivion, that game is just average without adding 500 mods.
Maybe you could think of Warcraft 3, people still buy it because of DOTA, you don't have this kind of long term value in console games. Again it's a different market, and it's not going away.

Mystery Bounty
