I need something until TOR drops

Tensor25Tensor25 Member Posts: 70

As the title states, i'm looking for an MMO to play until TOR drops. WoW, War, SWG, and EVE are not options. Would consider trying Aion again, any recent updates made this game better?

I like sandbox type games ( i know they're hard to find), but am open to engaging Theme Park style as well.

Any suggestions for games with really involved crafting? I'd consider dedicating my time to crafting as long as it is interesting.

Anything decent to keep me busy for 4-6 months? i'm sick of consoles.

thanks

Take a look at either Vanguard and Fallen Earth. They're a bit more sandboxy than the standard, have more interesting crafting than what's par for the course, but they're not the most popular of games at the moment.

give vanguard a try. given what you don't want I think you will really like it. If you do give it a shot, I'd love to hear you're thoughts.

Those are pretty much the two games for crafting.

If you want to experience a themepark game with an over-arching storyline to prep yourself for the SWTOR experience, i recommend LoTRO and AoC.  Both have F2P options that are very decent.   Stay away from pvp servers in aoc.

I would definately say take a look at Rift. There's a free trial available so if you don't like it, dump it.

Try to get past level 10 though before making your mind up.

The game is lacking in PvP at end-game and could probably use more content but that is all in the works I beleive and probably won't affect you unless you're playing 8 hours a day.

It's not an MMO, but if you haven't already spent a few nights with minecraft, I would highly recommend it.  It's a low-res sandbox that puts most MMO crafting to shame.

I am playing vanguard for the time being and absolutely love it.

What about Xsyon? I have no clue about the current state of the game since I kind of got burnt out on it around the time of release but it's pretty much completely revolved around crafting and building cities/tribe areas with others, or for yourself if you're dedicated enough. There should be a page about the game here on mmorpg so check it out. Just a heads up, it's a "indie" game with very few devs.

Did you read the bit where the OP interesting deep crafting?

    That counts Rift out..

Actually, I just read the post a bit quickly, you're right. Crafting although not bad in Rift, is pretty pointless.

If crafting is your thing, I agree with the Vanguard recommendation mentioned earlier.

    Edit:

Odd though, I don't see the point of getting heavily into crafting, in a game that you're gonna drop as soon as TOR hits.

I am also going with Age of Conan. It's a great game and now it's F2P so it's nothing lost if you don't like it :)

    Couple of things to add:

    2gold money cap

Limited Bag space (can get a page full with a bag from vendor tho..its enough)

Other than that I think its pretty damn good for a F2P game. Even considering going premium given all the content I havent played since I quit 2 years ago. Should keep me going until Tera at least.

Dunno about you, but I've been playing AOC a little over the last month or so and since Unchained hit, the chat is full of foul-mouthed idiots.

One of the downsides of F2P games I suppose, no credit card required so installed by kids. I just couldn't beleive the difference in a week.

SWTOR is a WoW clone so I would stay away from Rift and anything else that is also a WoW clone so you don't get burnt out with the same type of gameplay before it even launches.

    So I suggest:

    Guildwars (engaging themepark)

Wakfu (should be coming out soon, hybrid)

UO "awesome" shards are always a great diversion

umm.... Eve is a sandbox but I can't stand it myself

    Remember Old School Ultima Online

If you're looking to stick to the Sci-fi genre and like FPS action. I'm playing Global Agenda until TOR comes out and having a blast in it.

Only played it for free for a week before it convinced me to buy the thing and will sure keep me entertained until TOR comes out.

Yeah, when the game launched it had its idiots but it also had a lot of hardcore and mature players. One of my biggest gripes is that you can't really communicate with Premium Players. You are effectively limited to Trial and Say chat and Whispers.

Personally I'm just levelling a char because its fun to see how much the game changed since I last played it. I'll probably quit once I get bored though. Same thing like I did with APB Reloaded. That was fun for a few weeks, then it get repetitive.

IMO AoC Unchained screams to be played in Premium mode. Otherwise you miss out so much content : /. Shit thing is:

Sub Fee + Expansion. I cba to pay for a game I wont play for more than a few months. If only F2P Players could earn those points for cash shop somehow. I'd grind enough points for the expansion!

If you're looking for crafting, hands down Fallen Earth.

I would definitely recommend Global Agenda. The game has made quite the comeback now it is F2P; plus who doesn't like jetpacks? I never enjoyed pvp till this game and now I'm not interested in anything w/o solid pvp. Fallen Earth is also interesting, but its gameplay is slower than Global Agenda's - but it's crafting is better. Looking forward to Tribes mom, Firefall, and now Prime: Battle for Dominus... All expected Q4 2011-Q2 2012.

jacklo isn't kidding, If you want to give aoc a shot i'd wait a bit and see if they move on

You could give ryzom a look.  Has a f2p model(better than aoc's), has very good crafting too.  Is sandbox and the build a skill feature is interesting.  Last time I tried was a bit heavy on the grind but not sure if that's improved.
