I didn't get in on FFXIV at the beginning.
The stuff I read early on wasn't impressive.
Does anyone here have a more current perspective on it?
I looked forward to it for a long while but heard it was breleased essentially unfinished.
Is it still like that? Has it come in to its own yet?
(I did a search for FFXIV and came up empty)

As far as I know, yes.
Yea it's still buy to play. You don't have to pay $15 a month. As for the above two posts, I have not been logging in. I did log in for few minutes about a week ago, on feeling lonely in the world I loged out.

It's pretty easy to find what's been changed.The game is listed on this website.All you have to do is click on ff14 in gameslist and click news.As for wether or not it has a monthly fee, currently it still does not.
IMHO, the game is still terrible.The game is fundamentally terrible and needs a total redo.The world is bland and copy pasted terrain all over.There are no towns.villages, etc other then the capital cities.The classes,abilities,combat,etc is boring.There are no real quests other then the very infrequent story quests and the few they just added in a patch(levequests don't count imho), which are very basic.The game is just a huge grind with boring combat/classes and boring monsters.
If you can get the game for under 10 bucks, give it a shot I guess.Otherwise don't bother, trust me, it's terrible still.
right now its free (no sub) and theyre reworking the entire game. Theres a pretty hefty patch incoming any day now (click to see) thats going to change a lot with the combat as well as quests. I check in periodically when theres a new update to see what has changed and they are making an honest attempt to improve the game.
I will say its very different than your standard MMO. On Besaid server you'll find a pretty healthy community so I would suggest playing there. Also, pick Ul'dah as your starting city. Thats become the "hub"
If you want more info you should go to FFXIV Core and you'll learn all you need to know about the game at that site and within its forums.
they should have just made FFXI 2.0, lol
I keep thinking I might go back to XI but its so impossible to start new there now.
Edit: I just read on Core that part of the big patch is a built in Threat Meter. /facepalm
God I hate handholdy carebear crap.
