I realize the barrage of requests is overwhelming.. and my odds are basically nill...
Requesting buddy pass for [mod edit], and if you could-- tell me where you play (what server?), I'd love to play with you, I don't see much point in going solo in an MMO...
Friend and I want to try the game in its current state, we were in open beta. Might buy it since it's not too pricy at Best Buy. But for now two buddy keys would be awesome. PM me
I would love if I could get a buddy key from someone. I sorta want to try it out, but I don't got the money to buy the game at the moment. So If someone can send me a buddy key, I'd appreciate it.
Hmmm " you aren't very convincing, have you heard anything you like about this game or the changes that are coming? This is not a trial it is the full game you are asking for.
I'll tell you what I'll give my buddy key to the person who writes me a convincing essay on what they are looking for in an MMO and why they think FFXIV would be a good fit for them. Remember, do your research!
If not I'll just use that account as a mule. I paid for my game, I'm certainly willing to share with someone interested in giving it an honest try, and who shares a similiar taste to me in MMO's. Especially in the midst of all the changes that are coming, but it's gonna take some convincing for me to fork it over.
I'd also be willing to answer any questions you had about the game/future development plans prior to you trying it.
I actually had some questions about the game before I jumped in. Have you played the new patch yet? and if so, does it actually enhance the game?
I played FF XI for awhile, and my favorite part was definitely the varied/diverse jobs and the whole job/sub-job system, so one worry I had was that some of the classes/jobs/whatever for FF XIV look kinda boring. They don't seem as different from each other as the jobs in FF XI did. I was just wondering what your opinion was? Hopefully, I am just completely misreading it.
Also, how is the party system? I mean, getting a good party in FF XI was just amazing. Everything felt smooth and you gained experience so much faster, but at least when I played you HAD to be in a party. I think recently they changed it. So, in FF XIV, do you have to be in a party to get anywhere? and if you are in a party, is it fun and interesting? or just kinda boring like some of the dungeon finder things in WoW (personal opinion)
Finally, from what I read in a lot of reviews, the whole menu system is pretty clunky. Do you know if it has been fixed or is planning to be fixed at all?

Thanks! Sorry it ended up running so long.
(this was really long, probably still is sorry I tried to shorten it up)
I'll let you know when maintenance is up, it just started and they just released the patch notes. A lot sure has changed, how much it will enhance will the game will probably take a while to see.
Well job diversity was a #1 complaint among many, it is something that they are going to continue to address up to and including implementing a more FF style job system aimed at crafting very specialized roles in groups (let me know if you want specifics) As for the current armory (weapon) system I wouldn't say they were all the same exactly, each class definitely has its strengths and unique skillsets (Lancer TP/debuff king, archer burst damage king, thaumaturge enfeebling/highest damage caster, conjurer healing/elemental, etc.) this patch though will help them further to feel much more unique from eachother and strong in their role. Keep in mind this is still kind of the beginning of battle changes which will primarily be undergone from 1.18-1.2 afterwhich the job system will be put in.
Well I have to be in a party to do anything. Others can solo and guildleves/sidequests are being remade for those people to have something to do, but luckily for me at least on Selbina the majority of the people I see are also interested in grouping primarily. As for what grouping is like? Well that is changing in this patch too (with further enhancements in 1.19 and 1.2+) so we'll have to see. Guildleve groups were people repeated the same guildleves over and over again for optimal XP (now pretty much a thing of the past with 1.18) sucked and were like WoW style whack-a-mole parties for the most part. However I was in a raptor party last night (well 3, as it happens 2 were French and one Japanese) as my 48 archer it was the most fun party grinding I have had since FFXI (including later years of FFXI).
(Description of my last party 4 person 44-48) While party play is set for a lot of enhancements, I loved the fact that when our group "got in the zone" you could really see the level of skill involved. It was mentally exhausting, which I don't get in most new MMO's. As an archer I was trick attacking (Collusion in XIV, a lancer skill which can be used by other classes), dancing around and sneak attacking/stamina buffing, using my deaggro regularly, using all 3 action bars worth of abilities in fact the entire time. The tank was covering people at the right moment, pugilist was using this one skill called Follow Through which strikes from the opposite side of the pugilist and as this mob had a spike flail like mechanic it would then think someone was behind him and waste his TP doing the move if timed properly and the mob had full TP (sparing the rest of us either his nasty aoe, or potentially deadly breath attack). The mages were sleeping raptors on deck, and sleep stunning mobs at the proper times to stop certain specials when health was low. Not one death, non stop efficient kills, if XP chains were in (which they will be in 1.2) we would have had an unbroken chain the entire length of the party; and best of all it felt like we had to fight for it.
Keep in mind this was all despite the broken emnity system which grants way too much emnity to any kind of buffs and is being majorly fixed in 1.18. Also Raptors are a fairly quick kill (no faster than some mobs people party grinded on in XI) but too quick for most parties to utilize the Battle Regimen system (XIV's equivelent of skill chains). Even still it was a nostalgic moment for sure and the greatest thing is I know they are going to work to try and make it better. The game is flawed for sure, but I guess you'd have to have been there and I think you'd see there is definitely a base to build on for that type of beloved party play many of us fondly remember and something which despite playing a lot of other MMO's I have had a hard time finding elsewhere.
1.18 will also bring the first instances (small group 4 person, and 8 person), and the first beastman areas (with major ones coming in 1.19) for non-grinding party play.
UI goes through changes every update, they have fixed a lot of the stuff probably mentioned in the reviews however even after 1.18 I'm sure it will still have issues. The issue is with the engine/server not being able to handle certain things, however they are working on this and have acknowledged pretty much every problem with the UI that has been raised. If you can be specific I can be more helpful, however coming from XI UI/menu/controls aren't a personal hangup of mine so I don't really pay as much attention to development in this area as I do others.
No problem about the length I tried to be even longer in my response so I could hopefully give you a good picture of what the game is capable of from the perspective of someone enjoying it (and ended up going on way too long). This is all just my personal experiences, I'm not going to lie not everyone is likely to have had the same experience with the game (especially pre-patches) but I had a lot of fun yesterday/last night. I had a grueling 18 hour session which is rare for me these days (I'm self employed) trying to get my archer as high as possible before the patch and I'm still pumped from that feeling when you are in an awesome party and everything is just clicking. This last party was all japanese but me, however I know a few phrases and used http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/ and a list of translated game terms my linkshell has to keep up with what was going on. Everyone had a blast, and when we ended there were compliments all around. To me that is an unequaled feeling in MMO's and is why I continue to invest in the game.
I'm not even anxious to play this patch that is downloading right now even though I spent all that time leveling specifically for it, I'll play it later tonight unless I crash early. Right now I'm just enjoying the positive experience I just had (and I've had a few beers while game is down for maintenance).
Your party was what i loved best about XI, was hoping for something like that in XIV but was pretty disapointed, and havnt played since january.just keeping an eye on the progress and going to try it again after this patch. still waiting to see a few more good responses to get your key, i have an extra as well ...
Hey all, Ive been wanting to try this game out for a while and finally did some upgrading on my PC so i can finally handle it. Im looking for someone that ACTUALLY PLAYS this game to lend me a buddy key (yes lend, if i like the game ill buy a copy and give u ur key back if u want).
Murugan, I know u said you wanted an essay but Im a bit of an introvert and not really that great at expressing what im looking for in a game, but I can tell u the one of the biggest things i look for in an online game. I believe the social aspect is crucial. I remember forming parties in final fantasy xi, meeting great people from all over the globe, and just setting up shop and goin on a killing spree. Nothing beats dicking around with a bunch of new friends online .
So yeah, if you still enjoy your time in game and have a buddy pass available, please send me one! Id love to join you!
Thanks for the lengthy and awesome response. I apologize, I thought patch 1.18 was already live. You do make the game seem quite exciting as is though haha, but i do realize the whole youre mileage will vary warning.
Sorry to make your hard work feel useless, but I will probably wait to hear what the changes will be like once 1.18 is live. They seem pretty ambitious with these patches, and if they handle 1.18 well then I have faith that they will handle the other patches well At least well enough to warrant a purchase.
Once again, thank you, your post was extremely informative!
I've been watching this game for ages now and the new patch has really caught my interest, but I'd really like to try it out for free as well. If anyone has a spare key I'd greatly appreciate it. If I end up liking the game, I'd even share the love and go buy it and share my own key.

A healthy respect for the social aspect in MMO's is crucial to appreciating FFXIV, that being said the party search function is still not up to par with FFXI's unfortunately. When searching for people seeking a party (this was just introduced in the last patch) you are restricted to searching for people LFG only by one class at a time, can't give a level range, and still cannot use the auto-translate in the comment field.
We'll see once Darkhold/To-to-rak fever dies down a bit how xp parties fare in this post patch environment. On the one hand there should be plenty of incentive to form them, but they weren't really the focus of this patch. Unfortunately we are not getting mob distribution looked at and XP chains both slated to really give those a boost until 1.2, but 1.19's beastman strongholds may be helpful too. Keep in mind as I described in my party above it is absolutely possible to XP in parties like that, but it is not quite up to par with FFXI in this sense yet.

1.18 was released on the 21st however I have not gotten a chance to play through all of its changes yet since i don't play as much on weekends. I did do Darkhold though (the r50 instance) and it was great, I loved the boss fights, and the zone itself.
I also got some time in with the new battle system, along with auto-attack, the removal of the stamina bar, and the new emnity system/gauge: there were also some adjustments made to class abillities. It will take some time for a lot of people to adjust to all these massive changes. I do like the feel of combat better now than I did before, all abilities now feel like they are more impactful, self buffs now feel a lot more useful and I've begun to go more in depth with macro's where before due to the stamina bar I tried to stay from them to be as efficient as possible.
Playing both my Pugilist in Darkhold, and taking my conjurer from 11-14 for raise (now pretty much a staple for everyone since it has been lowered to rank 14) I have to say I enjoy the changes I no longer feel like I am spamming and it feels like I have the freedom to do more with my battle strategy per encounter.
I plan to get an XP party on my archer to try and hit 50 tonight/tomorrow, so I'll let you know how that experience went post-1.18.
