This week's Story of the Week is all about Hal Jordan, thanks to SOE's Austin Studio announcement from Fan Faire 2011. During the show, it was announced that DC Universe Online's first DLC pack would be "Fight the Light" and allow players the ability to make characters with Yellow and Green power rings.
Though last week’s big announcement of Planetside 2 was pretty massive, it wasn’t the only big news to come out of Las Vegas during SOE’s Fan Faire 2011. Also announced at the show was DC Universe Online’s first DLC pack “Fight for the Light.” Among a host of alerts, duos, and other content, the real shining part of this DLC is that players will gain access to the Green Lantern and Yellow Lantern power sets for their own characters. Long a requested addition to the game, these new powers should give alt-a-holics something to look forward to. On top of the powers though, come all sorts of new alerts (group dungeons) and duos (small-group content), and gear upgrades. Due to be released later this summer, the DLC will retail for $9.99.

My major issue is that this content was in beta and ready for the launch they should have released it with the game. Holding known content back was a huge mistake and now we have to pay for it. I call shenanigans. SOE should be on their knees trying to get subscribers back and should gift this for free as a gimmick. Business plans change but SOE are concentratiing on the profit over the subscriber/customer, if you focus on your customer shouldnt $$$££ come naturally?
I am not sure about the rest of you, but i am not paying for something that should hav ebeen in game from the beggining , and as far as alts, you do not really have naything else to do, max lvl is easily atained in less then a few weeks adn when i got there i was just standing around or fighting heros for no aperant reason, i never play a mmo after i get to "end game" i like character progresion ,they should ahve just made this game f2p and then sharged us for the dlc instead of charging us for an incomplete game then charging a monthley fee and THEN charging us for dlc
Id also like to point out at least in the EU you are charged just over 10% more than games like wow by SOE its 9.99 instead of 8.99. I have no problem paying that for a superior product + now you have charges for beta content.
As far as expansions go this is really cheap and probably worth the month. However I'm not sure I want to spend money on the game until I see it really coming out of the downward spiral its been in. I dont want to invest in a sinking ship, so before I spend any money I want to see the game doing well for a while.
A lesson in greed and nothing more. This game could have had a great following and sold an amazing amount of boxes if they used a B2P model, with items like this Lantern pack as DLC from time to time.
Exactly!
I absolutely love the DC Universe and its lore and was very much looking forward to this game. To say it is a complete letdown is an understatement! For me, the biggest part of that is the limited content and SOE's insult to my intelligence! No matter how you slice it, this game just isn't worth $14.99 a month!
The irony is Sony is playing us for fools, thinking that we'll happily pay and eat their $#!% sandwhich with a smile on our faces, when truly they are the fools for not having the foresight to realize that for most of us MMO gamers, this isn't our first rodeo. We've come to expect a certain standard of quality and content from our $14.99 a month fee and brother, this isn't it! Then on top of that, they try to slap a fee on content that was supposed to be delivered as part of our initial purchase price!
What you have here is akin to a sheisty contractor telling you he needs money to put a deck on your house when he hasn't even finished the roof you've already paid him for.
The drugs those execs over at SOE are doing, must be some good stuff. Either that, or as I've said, they have absolutely no regard for the intelligence their customers possess and in turn are showing themselves to be complete and utter fools!
Mark my words they'll change their direction once the lightbulb finally clicks on...then again this is SOE we're talking about.
This game could have revolutionized the content delivery mechanism for the comics industry in general and DC in particular.
They could have designed the revenue model just like comics subscriptions - paired their top authors with a modeler and animator instead of an inker and artist (don't know the terms) and let us subscribe to our favorite "books" They could have streamed trailers and maybe even movies into virtual theaters... the possibilities were endless. Here's hoping someone releases and non-kiddie Marvel MMO
dude - why is your text green? No offense, but to me it comes off as kind of self inflating or smug about your opinions. I told the same thing to my boss back in the day when he put the model of his BMW in his email signature.
Yeah, it couldn't possibly be because of the fact that hey, maybe I just like the color green and no offense but to me, you come off as someone that has an inferiority complex.
Why else would a person assume that because someone is using a different color font they think they're better than others? Besides, you know what happens when you assume, right?
Me on the other hand, I tend not to bother wasting time trying to get a fix on someone based on something as meaningless as a font color. But hey, that's just me?
Now, what can you glean from my use of emotes?
His text was created with willpower.
This is not a game.
I thought the color was appropriate since I was going to say it was created with a Green Lantern ring.

Indeed it was...I was entrusted with a ring by showing no fear of game forums and the heathen that lurk there :P
You know I played all of beta closed and open. Not once did I ever see the light power set that they are adding.
So they are going to make people pay for a mini expansion after admiting to launching the game with minimal content and then failing to keep to their monthly content updates. Right after the massively embarrassing hacking disaster. And people wonder why I am so cynical of SOEs management. "Hey let's put the Green Lantern stuff in the game in a way that is sure to annoy the most players." Sinestro must be reading this somewhere and laughing his ass off.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
I've never even heard of paying for a "mini expansion." How can that be justified? They just released the game a few months back with about 30 hours worth of content, have not lived up to their promised content additions, and now they give what sounds like their first reasonable content update, call it a "mini expansion," and charge for it. Unbelievable. I've always thought you're the man, Bill, but for you to just take it from SOE like this with the pacifying statement, "as long as Fight for the Light has the goods to be worth its asking price, I’ll gladly buy it," just makes no sense to me.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!
I had been planning to go back to DCUO online when they had released enough monthly content to make it worth it. This expansion pack just means i'll never go back now. Shame as its a decent game run by an incompetent company imo.
Not pleased about this. Pretty much every promise that was made when DCUO was released has been broken. I was enthousiastic about this game, even picked up at launch. But it stagnated quickly and I haven't looked back since I left it. Let's hope the next MMO action RPG is handled better.
Important facts:
1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
4. Community is more important than you think.
Why would I pay $15 a month just so I could pay $10 for a small amount of "new" content? I pay a monthly fee for content updates among other things, this should be included, or the monthly fee should be dropped.

Come on man, evryone knows Bill has his pockets lined with SOE green...
"Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day!"
Shite... it's a game..a fun game... allow the dev's to continue to support this game by showing some support!!... All you people who complain about SOE etc would be even more pissed without anything to play.
SOE provide a pretty decent service with pretty damn good games (in my opinon)...stop being so friggin self rightous and negative and be thankful for once in your tiny little lives. A lot of effort goes into all these games and all they get are people bitching cos it's not what they deamed good enough. Be thankful for once, It might not be the best ever update but at least we are getting updates and not games closing down.
I praise SOE for the effort they have put into all the products they support and with how thay have reacted to recent events...
Stop being so narrow minded people...and think for once how much work these people do to try and make YOU happy...

Yes, he told me this during a game of Punto Banco Baccarat at the Casino de Monte-Carlo along the French Riviera, during our discussion on whether buying only the 100 meter luxury yacht would make him look a bit of a peasant.

So, you don't think for a minute that some companies are strictly in it to make money? Well, I've got news for you!
While there are some good companies out there that care about their customers, there are also some companies that don't give a squat about their customers and only care about the revenue they can generate from them. And, if your body could produce cash like it grows hair, they'd as soon stick you in a Matrix-like cocoon and feed off you.
If you're not aware of this fact then you are either too young, too naive, or simply haven't held a high enough position within enough companies to realize it.
It's customers that can't separate the two companies from one another that unfortunately keep the greedy ones in business. SOE has been showing these sheisty business practices for too long now.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
SOE is not a religion or a charity. And last time I checked SOE is closing SWG.....
To the other guy the light set was a known part of the game before launch, maybe not your round of beta.
They are charging for the game, the monthly sub, and the new download content. It's not free. Hence, you don't have to be "thankful" since it does cost money. If they make the game free, then I guess your argument about people being thankful would hold a lot more weight. People knew the game lacked content yet were promissed monthly updates, thus it tried to justify a monthly fee when normally a game like this would be a 1-time purchase online console game. When they can't meet the monthly deadline (and a lot of other issues), people felt that the marketing of the game was mis-represented.
As for Bill Murphy, the problem with comparing this $10 content relative to other MMOs is that other MMOs have a lot more content to start with and most MMOs didn't promise monthly content updates. Hence, by missing the monthly content updates, and then getting an update that now costs $10, I believe that is the primary issue. If this game had a lot of content at first to justify monthly fees (like many other MMOs), and then had a big addition for $10, I don't think anyone would complain. But trying to compare DCUO's actions to other MMOs seems a bit strange.
Anyway, most everyone has voted with their wallets and have left this game. The sooner they find a way to correct the problems that led to so many people leaving, and then discounting the game, might salvage this title. The sooner the better. I just don't think they even know what the problem is. Exploits, lack of content, bad UI, etc. Gonna take a long time to fix IMO.
It seems Bill forgot the "little" debacle with champions online and their first content update they tried to charge for and how that one backfired at them??
DCUO has basically no more content than CO had at launch! Not to mention that CO has much much better character customization and is actually more fun to play (and that comes from someone that has developed a deep hate for Cryptic!).
Same thing will happen with this "paid" update on DCUO! It's gonna backfire at them like there is no tomorrow!
But then again..... maybe not... as the official DCUO forums are totally dead, so there is basically no one left there to complain about it. lol.
Which in turn basically means that there is also basically no one left bothering buying this update.
That makes all this even more strange in what SOE is thinking! It's like they try to burry their own game and piss off the remaining little amount of players they have left.
