Ever notice all those "dead" games that WoW "killed" are still in operation?

Let's say for speculation purposes that some cool new game that everyone loves so much is released tomorrow.  All of the discontent ex-WoW players flock to it, and by gum they've all discovered the Nirvana they've been looking for all these years!  They get their friends in, "dude, best game evar, check it out".  "WoW is dead, whoohoo!"

Available evidence indicates that "dead" MMOs are good for at least another decade of operation after the Gamer-Hivemind coroner signs the certificate.  Meanwhile Blizzard is rolling in cash from Diablo III and whatever else they've released in the meantime.

    What's to celebrate?  Who "won"?

{mod edit} I for one hope this game is good for me. I try to to set any expectations. Since i beleave that expectations are nothing more then premeditated resentments.

you guys got a point there, still holy crap berst pre orderes across the board even retailers are gettig in mroe pre orderes by the minute. Best pre orderes #1 in  online retILERS such as origin, amazon.com, bestbuy.

thats just 1 or 2 day pre order sale coudl you imagine after a month.

I seriously think there will be 2 million playewrs at launch, or 2 million concurent users at launch.

So yea bioware should add lots and lots and lots of servers. As far as going head to head with world of warcraft's 11.4 million subscribers. Give swtor some time after launch.

There is a huge chance that SWTOR could actually increase more subscriptions after launch.

I would not be suprised if there will be 2 million concurrent users trying to login swotr at launch.

Bioware has got a winner on their hands.

I just hope bioware prepare 400 servers at launch, its goign to be a bumpy ride.

    Numbers and proof please...

Will SWToR be good, I think so, Have I pre-ordered? yes

Do I think it will take down wow, no, nothing will take down wow and even after SWToR it will be number 1, EA missed a trick by pricing their game at the high end of the current market Value (though people happily pay more for Activision or THQ games), But that wont alter the fact that No MMO will ever reach wow like numbers again, including wow (4million copies of Cata sold tells a much more compelling story than blizzards inflated subscribers numbers, boosted by the pay by the hour market).

Expect SW:ToR to sell between 2 and 3 million copies and retain about 1.5 million subs after 6 months.

I would be happy this game does good enough to survive some years. Even to this, I have doubts.

    Preorders don't mean anything.

People who buy the game DON'T MEAN ANYTHING.

Its who keeps playing it after launch and nothing can predict that.

MMORPGs should be happy with 400k player average. That was Everquests number and that was the original MMO standard.  WoW is a freak exception that will not be matched.

Its like if someone tried to remake FACEBOOK... improved it even, but it was still Facebook.  It would get members, but everyone would still just stick with Facebook.

dont forget that bioware's chances of having cataclysm's launch sales numbers could be reachable by the time swtor launches.

(alot highler). 4 million boxes sold with swtor? Huge possibility.

Things may go that way or they may not.  I certainly have no crystal ball, but another possibility is rampant disappointment.  I get the unfortunate sense that most people think that this game is going to turn the genre on its ear, change the industry, or whatever buzz phrase that you want to use.

I say nothing will be further from the truth.  Speaking of game systems only, TOR uses mostly standard conventions.  The things they are adding to this experience are almost all along the lines of story, voice acting and cinematics.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion whther or not those things bring to us a new and wonderful MMO experience.  I tend to say no.  Much in the same way that for many of us, Oblivion fell flat on it's face in front of Morrowind for much the same reason.  The more time you take to make a game a fully voice acted and cinematic experience,  the less time that you have to work on the depth of the world and lore and intertwining story lines.

People need to stop pre-ordering MMO's right now. This is one reason we get so many terrible games.TOR isn't my type of game anyway and I have no interest in it or WoW.I certainly don't think it will kill wow though.

You know what preorders mean? People want to play the game. That is all. It doesn't mean they will still want to play the game after actually trying it out. Ask the people over at Funcom how that worked out for them with AoC.

Also, the 400 servers? Yeah that isn't too good an idea either. We've seen it before. Game launches amid tons of hype and anticpiation has a lot of servers, then 6 months down the road when interest has dropped to a lower level they have to merge a bunch of server which makes people think the game is failing.

I hope like hell it dosent kill wow...then we will have to deal with the wow players in all the game that arent wow. and that would be tragic....fear not wow players nothing to see here move along.

No single game will ever kill WoW. WoW will die when Blizzard finally decides to pull the plug.

That being said SWTOR could be the first mmo to put a dent in WoW's North America and European numbers.

like i said btween now and swtor launches, i wouldn't be suprised if swtor can reach wow's cataclysm sales box figures on day 1

  • LidaneLidane Member CommonPosts: 2,300

Why isn't there room in the market for both? Competition is healthy.

TOR and WoW are two different games. Different settings, different genres, etc. Setting TOR up as a WoW killer is asinine. I like the game and have every intention of playing TOR when it launches, but I'm not going to get wrapped up in that kind of hyperbole. It's absurd.

There's room for more than one successful game in the market.

My opinion on this is the follow

I'm happy for your enthuisasm for the game and wish you the best of luck with this game, on the other hand i don't think or even want one game to kill another.  I just want this one to do well enough to stay alive and be fun.  Also the tension between people who really like the game, and people who hate the game is really high right now, posts flying everywhere, sometimes even de-evolving into attacks on one another. The very last thing we need to be doing right now (as fans of the game)  is putting more gasoline on the fire for the "other side" to use against the game.

Just personal thoughts on the subject. Othewise i'm happy that your happy and that it appears at least for the moment the game is doing well. Lets just try not to provoke each other on these boards, cause right now that is very very easy to do with some people.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Has past experience taught us nothing? You can't outWoW WoW. ToR is, in my opinion, a WoW clone. I predict it will follow the same avenue as all of the other WoW clones before it.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

After AoC and WAR and the other flops--the market needs a winner or two.  Badly.
