Stay with Rift. Or jump on SWTOR?

I play Rift. I love Rift for what it is. But from the my hype of SWTOR I can't help but have to decide to stay or hop on the bandwagon.

I love the fact that Trion has released 1.3 a few months from original release and with futire patches planned for release soon, I love just about everything Trion does.

On the other hand, the announced features for SWTOR is right up my alley when it comes to my gaming interest. And EA is also not my favorite people when it comes to games on the internet. So I'm worried of so-so and next to none updates at all. But I also enjoy Bioware as well.

I also know i could buy SWTOR not like it and go back to Rift. But I am also a gamer on a budget.

Please post your thoughts and opinions.

Don't know about you but I would rather play something newly released for atleast the first 30days than a game with no content .

There really isn't anything anyone can say to sway you either way. All the info is out there about the game and all you can do is read it and decide for yourself whether to take the plunge. I could tell you why i will be buying it but that's me, not you.

If you're still in doubt at launch then just wait a few months for the price of the box to come down a little, launches are usually messy anyway.

If you're on a budget then wait a few months to see what the overall judgement is for this game.  Months that is not weeks.  Don't go by posters or reviews that come out within the first week of the game's launch.  Give it about 2-3 months for the hype to die down to get a clear picture of the good and bad with this game.  At that point you can get a better assesment if this will be the game for you.  Probably get it a few dollars cheaper if you decide to purchase it then too.  Not to mention you'll miss out on the whole launch issues and bugs.

This game isn't going anywhere.  No reason to buy it "blindly" if you're on a budget.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

What wickedjelly said. If you're enjoying Rift and on a budget, why worry? Wait until Tor has been out for awhile so you can save money. Then if you reach the point where you get tired of Rift and like what you see with TOR then you can make the change.

A little bit a puke rises up in my throat every time I think of logging into Rift (you don't want to know what Wow does to me /cringe).

Lets hope SWTOR manages to avoid this 'crap mmo' auto-immune response for a least awhile.

Depends if you like red koolaid or purple koolaid more.

PS the purple koolaid cost millions more to make, but tastes the same.

    ummm...

It's difficult because how do you tell a person what to do when they know their minds better than anyone else?

    Here's my thought.

If you like Rift then play Rift. If you want to try a second game and SWToR interests you then play SWToR. If you are just looking for a second game or are looking to switch games and don't know what SWToR is truly about then do some research and decide.

I guess I'm not realy seeing the issue. Based on what you like, dont' like and how you are feeling make a decision. If you don't like your decision then you can change back.

GW2 will be my main game but since it has no sub fees, I may very well get TOR sometime down the road. I'm not a preordering girl though, and the price of TOR at the moment is irksome. I'll wait and quietly hope the price will fall and the game will be awesome enough for me to fork out my cash. xD

i've been burnt on hype before so i use the 'wait and see' method now.. no matter whether its an MMO or a single player offline game, i no longer buy stuff blindly..  so... barring any free trials.. i'd wait at least a few months before buying just to see how it pans out.. thats if you can wait that is.. i know a lot of people don't have the patience.. the other thing of course is that after a few months the retail price of the game might well drop... as often happens 3+ months after release..  so no rush.. and patience sometimes has its own rewards image

The problem with most MMO's is that if you dont catch on to the game during the early stages of release then you will fall behind the majority of the population who will be ahead of you playing in higher lvl areas, which could lead to problems finding players to play with if you wait to switch to SWTOR.

Also when does SWTOR come out? If its not anytime soon then you may be best waiting for a game like Guild Wars 2 to come out if release is around the same time. GW2 will not have a monthly fee which will allow you to play both GW2 and/or Rift / TOR, staying fresh by switching between games slowing down the burnout that cames after completing a games content. Plus GW2 has a lot of solo friendly features as well as group stuff so you never have to worry bout falling behind.

Stay wth RIFT. Wait until the hype fades on SWTOR and then judge if the game has enough content and continued development to warrant the sub.

actually i would apply that 'wait and see' factor to GW2 also.. the game is far from being a certain success.. and .. its quite possible the price will drop a few months after release.. and with so much controversy surrounding GW2.. it might be just a good idea to hold off on the initial purchase just in case it bombs..  just because its not a subbed game.. doesnt mean you can't waste money on it...  all games..regardless of their payment models, should be researched before buying them blindly..  free trials and player/official reviews can go a long way towards answering questions a purchaser needs to know before spending their money.. particularly if they don't have much to begin with.... its called prudence...image

For a gamer on a budget, I have to echo others and suggest you look into Guild Wars 2.  First AAA MMO ever with no subscription.  With that out of the way...

I have a pretty pessimistic view of Trion.  One on hand, great that they've been working like crazy since the December before release to really make the game more exciting and to add a lot of new content and fix issues.  On the other hand, the game's foundation is so uninspired.  Only one leveling path per faction, bland cities, bland races, endless kill X quests.  I can't help but think that it would have been a much better game had they had a much grander vision right from the beginning.

Honestly, my first thought is to even question whether or not this will even be an issue.  The rumor right now for SWTOR is for a December release.  Are you even still going to want to play Rift 5 months from now?

If SWTOR has even a fraction of the rumored amount of content, it's going to have much more replayability than Rift, not even counting the story and voiceover enhancements.  If you really like the idea of being ganked in the open world by an infinite stream of NPCs, then Rift might be the one for you (for me, that idea got old before I even experienced it).  If not, I think SWTOR will probably be superior to Rift in every other way so go with that.

    Play what you enjoy.

I often find the start of MMOs to be the most fun...  so why not try and catch TOR when it launches and enjoy a bit of discovery?

I played RIFT for a while, but just cancelled my sub.  Not because the game is bad... I enjoyed it a lot - it just reached a point where the things left I could do were more grindy than I cared to deal with... doesn't mean I'm never allowed to play again, or that TRION should be cursed for not making a game that will give me nonstop entertainment for 6 years.

i played rift for 4 months. i liked it cause of the updates that they did to fix thing and the different ways you can spec. i quit cause because it reminded me of of the wow players that always looked at gear and didnt care about anything else.

The solution is simple: ask one of your loved ones to give you SWTOR for a Christmas gift. You're just save yourself a lot of trouble and time. image

If you enjoy Rift because of soloing to 1-50 on an endless chain of heavily rail-roaded solo quests, then you should jump to SWTOR, I expect it will be something like that but with better written quests.

If you enjoy Rift because of massive dynamic events with hundreds of people and never knowing what the world is like when you log in, then you should stick with Rift.

Me, I enjoyed Rift for the events, but otherwise it's too similar to EQ2 (which is my main game), so i didn't stick around.  I'll be playing SWTOR to get through the (mostly) single-player story and then I fully expect to go back to EQ2.

Don't let the hype overtake you.  At present you don't have to worry about which game to play.  Someone else in the post mentioned SWTOR is not going to be release until the end of the year.  Stick with Rift for now.  Hopefully by the end of the year more information will be released, NDA lifted etc.  You may have had you fill of Rift by the time TOR releases to make the decision easier.  No harm in waiting, at most you may miss the early access, but you will also miss the worse of all the launch issues that plague release.
