Bored and thinking about trying this game.....or shouldnt I?

RaduerielRadueriel Member Posts: 57

I've been looking for a good free game to play and due to the advertising on here thought about trying this one.  I read some of the bad events of the game and wondered if things have improved or gotten worse? Also I've reviewed the various combinations of characters and found it to be a bit daunting on trying to choose a combo. So if anyone who reads this and has experience behind the game could offer some advice that would be great.

I plan to play on pve servers because I only plan to play casually. I also like to solo play for the most part, so having a character that has good survivablitly would be ideal. I had considered a "fury" Druid/warrior choice, but would like other options. Perhaps even a Battlemage might be fun.? Any good solo build advice?

I may decide otherwise if many of you think this game truely is not worth investing time in it.

You're casual, good.  yeah go for it.  just don't get conned into spending any money no matter how tempting it is. in pve, you can choose whatever combo you want so that's cool.

this game is mainly free until you get to lvl 55... one of my favorite combinations that has very good survivability and can be very powerful in endgame has to be a battlemonk (Priest/Warrior). Instead of focusing on casting, this class goes right up in the mix of things and brawls it out even with the strongest of warriors, knights, rogues, mages, and even scouts... lvl 15 elite is when you get the Battlemonk Stance.. increased physical attack, physical defense, but reduced healing power. lvl 20 elite is your 1st melee spam attack.. lvl 25 is a very useful attack that hits twice for more dmg than the lvl 20 elite.. lvl 30 is the most powerful.. using 30 rage (spammable up to 3 times) and in endgame deals 500%+ mainhand dps.. Battlemonks use the axe/shield combination.. the priest general skill.. Magic Barrier... increases magical defense by as much as 40%.. the priest general skill... holy aura... makes you immune to any dmg (excluding Damage over time)  for 5 seconds... the priest primary skill.. Soul Bond.. makes it to where when you die.. you get to rez where you were killed.. Grace of Life.. the priest's health buff.. Amplified Attack.. the priest's buff that increases physical attack.. Ryasrevenge.. lvl 67/57/46 mage/priest/scout.. Rbattlemonk.. lvl 32/25/22 priest/warrior/knight Palenque server

I played ROM completely free up to around lvl 57 before grinding out and visiting the cash shop..

This game can be played completely free from beginning to end if you dont mind grind, grind, grinding for loot to sell for gold in the AH to trade for diamonds to buy upgrades for gear and weapons because the mobs get really tuff after lvl 55 or so..

I really enjoyed this game for months and imho it is certainly worth giving a try..

    Playing GW2..

atm i am being forced to playing for almost free since my diamond supply is nearly cut off... also i only buy diamonds during double diamond weekends... i have to make toons and lvl them to 10 just for the arcane transmutor charges so i can tier my new lvl 65 Aok Prayer staff.. Its really fun questing in this game and it is definately worth a try

  • Lovely_LalyLovely_Laly Member UncommonPosts: 734

try you can, be sure that at high lvl you'll or live in total grind or spend like 500 $ on upgrades,

    have fun=)

P.S. I gave up this game when find out how "free" it is, so if you think you can get addict & spend lot of money, better not try, IMO.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

  • Wow, where to start and what to say. I've had some great times with RoM but quit out of pure exhaustion and frustration. The game, itself, REALLY IS a lot of fun to play. I've played all the classes, but not all of the class combos, gotten a few characters above lvl 55/55, and my honest opinion is that there's something to like about each class.

Where things really fall short: Frogster and Runewaker run/own/operate (ruin) the game. I started playing, shortly after the Chapter 2 release (when elves, Druids, and Wardens entered the picture). I also started out as purely f2p, but could buy diamonds (RoM's cash shop currency) straight out of their auction house, for in-game gold. Gold spammers were (back then) able to hack the game and sell counterfeit gold to people, some idiots bought this gold, the spammers stole their credit card and bank info, and all hell broke loose. The spammers saw that Froggy/Runewaker was about to lock out their counterfeiting hack, so the spammers bought diamonds with stolen CC info and proceeded to sell these diamonds in the AH. Now, any GOOD/reputable company would have gone after the spammers and stopped this crap (a lot of gaming companies have done just that), but instead....Frogster just took diamonds out of the AH, entirely. Legitamate people trying to sell their diamonds were screwed and f2p folks were screwed. The bad guys just walked away. As an alternative, spammers started creating in-game items, known as "tiered mana stones" and selling them in the AH for gold. As a result, Frogster/Runewaker posts the following message, in-game, quite frequently: "Players caught purchasing tiered mana stones may be permanently banned." (that's not verbatim, but that's the jist of it). Again, the bad guys are not punished...only the players. Frogster/Runewaker will claim that they cannot get rid of spammers, due to the fact that spammers constantly create new/free accounts with multiple characters on each. I cry bs on this. They could either have GM's online to police this or could lock out spammers' I.P. addresses if they really wanted to, or cared. As long as the company gets your money or not, they could care less about you. There are two npc's, in one of the main cities, that are supposed to be in-game diamond-trading npc's. The actual, physical npcs have been standing there for well over a year (or more), and the company claims that they're still "testing" the diamond trade (I've heard it's up and runnning on the European servers), but so far, NOTHING has happened. "We're working hard on it." BS.

I had quit for awhile, but came back halfway between the release of Chapters 3 and 4. The community and playerbase had seemed to continue to flourish and people seemed to be having fun at it still, so I said, "what the hell". Better stats, for gear, had showed up in the AH, and for fairly reasonable prices. Even at lower levels, my characters had great gear and I could enjoy being a little OP'ed for once. Diamond buyers would sell CS items to people by "gifting" the items through the in-game mail system, and two thing happened. Some of these sellers were scammers...they'd just take your gold and run away w/it, but there were also a lot of honest/legit people who did people right. I was very lucky...I bought CS items from a lot of sellers and never got scammed (thank God). I also broke down and spent some of my own money on the game too, and took advantage of some good sales and deals. Things went REALLY good, almost up until the Chapter 4 release.

I don't have all of the information and specifics on what happened here, so if what I say is wrong, I completely apologize and I hope someone will correct me, but: from what I heard, there was a double-diamond sell, in which a lot of people bought diamonds via Paypal, or some other payment method, these people didn't get double their purchase, they were promised by Frogster that they would eventually receive their extra/double diamonds, (and this is where I'm really confused) they either NEVER got those diamonds or they got them and then they were taken back by Frogster. Again, if anyone knows all the facts about this, PLEASE correct me. Whatever happened...people (at least on Govinda server) quit in DROVES. I was one of the first...I didn't really know, then, the ins and outs of what had REALLY happened, except that I had tens of millions of gold, what few diamond sellers were left had suddenly spiked their prices (per diamond) and though I had the money, by the time I could even contact a seller, they were always out. On the flip side of scamming...I had never scammed any of my sellers, always paid them up-front, and was developing a solid reputation amongst them. My regular sellers were gone, the last few sellers ran out of stock the moment they posted a sale, and it seemed like only the most powerful characters and/or guilds stayed on top, and no one else could ever hope to catch up.

Now, Govinda is like a ghost down. My once-fairly-powerful guild is dead, my GL's (really good people) are gone, my guild buddies are gone, and all that's left are new players that don't know what's going on, and the last few "uber" players that still drop $400 per week on the game and are generally a sub-community of 'bags containing a mixture of vinegar and water'. Not all of the ubers are like this, just most of them, and that's just my own opinion. I'd be uber too, by now, if Frogster/Runewaker gave the first crap about their customers. As of now, they (FA/RW) are trying to "get in touch" with their last few customers, see what the people want, and try to implement that in-game. I feel like it's too little, too late...that ship has long since sailed.

I guess you can call me a bitter-old, ex-Runes player, but I'd hate for you to play the game awhile, fall in love with it like I did, and then end up in a world of dissapointment. My actual advice to you is this: if you really are just bored out of your mind and wanna give it a spin, go for it, but proceed with caution. DON'T get addicted. Let it tide you over until you can find something else to play, or who knows...maybe Frogster/Runewaker will get bought out by a company that actually gives a damn about people. Only time will tell.

Laly isn't kidding...the prices of CS items are rediculous at best. For some of the items, instead of buying them, you can pay for breakfast; lunch; AND dinner.

The game is good for about 30lvls and if you're dedicated at that point about another 30lvls in your 2nd class, then the repetition and tedium sets in.

The cashshop dependancies mentioned are not a lie either. While it is possible to just play purely PvE for free, you'll just need to over-level most of the content/quests in order to complete them, which kind of defeats the purpose of doing them in the first place.

But if you're still set out on trying it, you can't go wrong with a Warden/Scout. It gives you a combat summon to tank for you, you attack from a range, and get plenty of damage over time spells/skills, and can also heal.

    TLDR: Item shop. Yea.

Existence is a paradox. It just is.

I quit because of the tedium of leveling both classes.  It just wasn't for me.

If you like WoW and want to try a F2P game in that vein I'd suggest Forsaken World.

If you hate WoW, you may still be able to enjoy games like Age of Conan, which I quit around level 34, or LOTRO which I'm a lifer but barely play.

I'm in the same boat as you. I was going to type out a whole tangent about why i'm jaded on this game, but honestly whats the point. Most of us liked the game for the same reasons, and we also hate the game for the same reasons. Frogster and their greedy CS practices have ruined this game a dozen times over. Its unfortunate that they took a game with such potential and shafted it the way they did.

For people who are looking at the game, I have no idea if the game is even worth trying anymore. To be honest, it's probably not worth the risk because if you start and you make it to 55, you'll have to pay either a large amount of time, or money in order to progress decently past that point. It might be best not to put yourself in temptations way.

This game became simple: buy your power, which, I guess not fun at all.
If you think you can play it for free & be able to enjoy, I need to tell that by the time you spent to get your upgrades, greedy Frogster will add new level or zone, or items (and offer for like 20$ piece at item shop), so all your boring efforts will be done in vain.

To me it's clear: this game asking for too much money to spend & have nothing to do with fun, so better to avoid.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

You can get to lvl 67/55 for free, if u have good guild they can gear u over 20k hp or more, then IF you want to be stronger, u spend money or try to take lots of time out of your life to farm that gold to buy diamonds from diamodn sellers

  • blackst0rmblackst0rm Member CommonPosts: 19

I just quit Forsaken World due to how much u need to spend/or alts u need to create to become a person of value in raids/pvp.

I have played both Forsaken World and Runes of Magic(till mid chapter 3) endgame, and both are expensive in their cash shop. One thing i could say  that helps Runes of Magic is that they hosted double diamond sales often so u get double game currency  for your money which is generally the best time to buy.

In Forsaken World the best deals i have seen are 15% more game currency or like very insignificant reductions on items in the cash shop it just got so stupid because u have major cash shoppers who have the highest tier gems and their gear refined to max(+12) and full masteries(which increase your damage largely) and lastly full resistances which migitate damage.. to max those to lvl100 you need to spend thousands which some have done and it just kills the fun in any 1v1 pvp.

Last thing about Forsaken World is that you cannt run and cast spells at the same time for pvp which is the dumbest thing so your left standing there casting spells, it becomes a race of who can collect damage orbs in pvp which incrase your damage largely. Anyway both are major cash hogs, just dont play forsaken world or runes of magic(unless you have deep pockets) if you decide to quit WoW just wait for GW2 or Diablo 3 like me ;o
