Because there are more apple computers used in product placement then are in use by actual consumers, and if i were Apple i would want to insist that computers will die.
i love the look of the games my kids play, but alas the controller is beyond me. it all started back in the early 80's when going they put a bunch of new buttons on the arcade games that replaced the joystick, and even then as a teen i knew i couldn't hang. When you can only get maybe 8 or 10 quarters out of your parents then there gone in ten min you know you've been forced out of the market. So i hope the beloved pc games stick around
I'm old enough to have heard this for a couple of decades.
Mind you, I'm also old enough to remember when microcomputers such as the old Speccy and C64 were going to make consoles redundant and they never really did. I also remember when we thought that neither consoles or computers would ever have the raw power and graphic awesomeness of arcade machines.
I also remember when the mouse was a gimmick that would never catch on, phones were the size of a housebrick and required a car battery in a suitcase to run (and were never going to be for anything other than phoning people) and the tablet concept was a silly one (what a computer with no keyboard, limited functionality and more expensive than a viable desktop? LMAO!!) but yet here we are.
Point is, no-one knows what the future holds for computers or consoles and everyone is just guessing. In fact I would be willing to bet good money that whatever happens in the future it'll be something no-one could possibly predict today.
One thing I am willing to have a stab at predicting is that the 1980s-style desktop setup, with all it's wires and ugliness will get a more elegent redesign at some point.
I don't think you'll see the PC or consoles die, but instead see the two begin to merge. The hardware in consoles is quite comparable to a decent PC these days.
Microsoft stands in a great position to re-establish it's monopoly on the software market by establishing it's XBOX 360 and its' further iterations as one of the go to places for fun and work. The only thing preventing this is some sort of base standard for hardware that would allow things like application software to be sold for all Console PC's.
Imagine how much easier it would be to only match a game to a few hardware specs as opposed to potentially hundreds.
I would have to disagree with his assumptions and otherwise mediocre attempt to have a witty laugh out loud article.
Basically you can get porn on any device nowadays, tablet PC's to your consoles via web using a keyboard and mouse, just like a PC. So based on porn the PC is not going to die? I find it hard to believe that would be why if anything that the PC would continue to just survive. PC's are going to survive for more multitude of reasons, and logical reasons then using PORN as one, as described by this guys attempt at trying to make us laugh.
So let me digress, is this a article solely to provoke logical responses or was it done to provoke idiots into thinking your statements hold credibility because they approve of your laugh out loud article. Which I might add, was not funny to me. Porn is good for times, but in this articles case of use does not hold any credible reasoning to why a PC would survive just based on porn.
Logical reasoning would suffice to a more direct thought process. For instance, creating and scientific research. I can name many more, what about the ease of use vs a console or other device, storing data. Playing advanced games or compatibility of features not yet on consoles or other devices. The PC can't die even if it didn't have porn, to many reasons that make sense why it would stay. By the way everything created starts with a PC nowadays. Also PC have far more uses then just consoles or other devices could ever have, at least in this point in time.
I play games on PC and on console systems. For me a controller is much better then a keyboard/mouse. Why?
1. You move your character with a joystick. That is much easier then WASD or mouse and you have much better control over your character.
2. You look around with a joystick. The same argument as above. So with only using two thumbs you have very fine control moving your character and looking around. How many fingers do you need for that on keyboard/mouse?
3. Beside 2 joysticks you have 20 basic keys on a controller. You can have more if you are using combination of keys, like using SHIFT or CTRL. Using 20 keys on a keyboard (beside WASD) without looking is difficult as hell. On a controller you can very easy remember their locations because of the configuration of a controller.
Three more reasons why I prefer console systems over PC:
1. You can play on a big TV.
2. You can have great sound.
3. You can sit comfortably in a sofa.
seeing your 1, 2, & 3 caused me to comment on your whole post..
i prefer mouse and keyboard.. personally i know my keyboard as well as any controller person knows their controller. i dont have to look at my keyboard at all and hit what i intend to hit every time.
i can use wasd moving my character in any direction while at the same time hitting my macro keys, and turning the camera behind me with the mouse while firing or attacking whatever i am moving to or from.. without lookin at either the keyboard or the mouse..
its what i am used to after 30+ years of computer use..
as far as 1, i play on a 46" 1080p hdlcd tv that is my computer monitor. (i did try out a 60" plasma for awhile but went to a smaller tv because it fit and felt better to me.)
as far as 2, i have a 7.1 stereo surround sound with my system with an office that has great acoustics. in a fps like CoD i can tell the direction of fire and approximate distance to that person that made the shot. that can shake the windows upstairs if i hit the volume over 60%.
my desk is a 36" x 72" office desk with my monitor attached to the wall infront of me, i use a wireless trackball mouse and keyboard with a reclining high back leather office desk chair, i actually dont have a couch in my house at the moment, havent seen the need to have one since i threw the old one out no one has missed it..
just because your comp is sitting there with a lil 17" monitor on a flimsy shaky desk and your sitting on a 20$ plastic desk chair from wal mart dont think that everyone else in the world uses the same set ups. (just hazarding a guess, not meaning it as an insult.)
i have a better gaming set up than most console users have in their living rooms and i am sure there are people that have alot better set ups than i do.
console users spend their money on making their gaming area comfortable and nice.. most pc users that arent kids sponging off their parents spend their money making their corner/space/room/office as cool and as comfortable as a console would their living room.
and the best thing about pc over console in my opinion.. i dont have to give my chair up or turn off the computer when company comes over to talk to the wife.. they dont need to be in my office period..
equipment arguments are moot.. a comp can use anything a console can use... most tvs have video inputs of some type.. most video cards have hdmi ports.. comps can use 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound systems.. so arguing console is better because i can have a big tv is well simply untrue, since i can match anything you can use.
personally the only people i ever hear saying comps are dead are ones that either have only ever used an android type phone, or grew up on console games (basically youngins).
yeah comps will change eventually get smaller stronger.. maybe even eventually merge into a type of system that runs everything, home ent systems, as well as networking through everything else.. but i dont ever see them truly disappearing.
maybe end up with something that is a bastardized merge of all the console systems, computer, and a central server running the fridge, washer, dryer, water heater, and thermostats of the house controlled by some phone pad hybrid thing that works as the main interface of the whole house and all of its entertainment possibilities.

Yep, It's all gonna get mashed together into one, at some point.
And when it does, controller aren't going to be the standard, probably an option, and you'll probably have both...
The controller for scrolling through the movie selection on the interweb-movie-rental-shop.
But who wants to type up 9 pages of text which is due to tomorrow, with a controller. :P

OK lets get some things out straight away - I love my PC and have been building PCs for 15years, I also work with game dev.
Ok as people have rightly pointed out PCs will not disappear - people will still have them for certain things, work and other things
BUT PC gaming will die, lets be honest it is dying now, very slowly but it is dying, apart from Blizzard there are what other big house who dev for PCs? Very few is the answer.
Now the reasons why PC gaming will die is as follows (it will be a very sad day):
Consoles will finally have the power to compete directly with high end machines, this has been happening slowly but every new console got that little bit closer to a PC on power, sound, gfx and mp.
A price of console is a fraction of a brand new PC - i would suggest even for the next gen of consoles (xbox 720/PS4) they will be able to successful perform/outperform the new top end PCs that will cost 4 times more to build. The new console will be able to keep this up for 3-5 years, in that time you will be required to spend a further amount of money on the PC to keep it up there (new gfx ever 18months, additional ram etc)
MS is already looking at the 720 to have keyboard and mouse support
It is easier to develope for consoles as there is less testing required
HD television, tablets and smart phones in their own way will all help in the demise of the PC as a gaming platform, cost vs performance will finally make the PC unviable, also if the future is as most people are looking cloud computing will also put its foot in for the PC gamer
I will have to disagree... Only way computer dies is there is "advanced comptuer" like.... virtual Reality from movie "Lawnmowerman". Otherwise comptuer will never dies out.
The powers that be want you to be FORCEd to store all your information on THEIR facilities....If I were you I would stay away from anything that says CLOUD or hints of it.....When you rebuke the CLOUD and it fails they will go back to what works......You only have one shot at this....

You don't get it do you, the console will die far faster than the PC, the ipad and it's competition will see to that. I really doubt the next generation of consoles will really do that well. PC gaming is not dying by any means, it is console gaming that is feeling a slow death. Ask any console developer, they are looking at the ipad and iphone world. If they don't they are going to be left in the dust.

Consoles and ipads/smartphones/tablets are different game markets, these things actually enhance console gaming as often they have interaction and are created by the same people who look primarily at console gaming.
How can you state PC gaming is not dying? How many AAA games are released just on the PC nowadays? Console gaming statistically is on the up and up, please if you have any links stating how console gaming is dying please link them it would be nice to see.
Erm I work for a developer, any ipad stuff is outted to specific houses who work just on Ipads, any IPs i work with are only going to be developed on these and next gen consoles - maybe you are right and me, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have got it totally wrong..........

Thank you for confirming my point - if you read in my post that is exactly what i said.
For the price of an xbox or ps3 u cant build a pc to play the same games - for 3 times the price you can, and over the life of a console you will prob need to stick in an extra gfx (i change mine ever 18months - 2years) for what 200 bucks? SO over the life time of a console you spend 250 bucks, over the lifetime of a PC to play the same games you spend 1000, yes they may look better and load a little faster...............BUT they are the same games!
Please just try and understand the point i am trying to make before jumping on a single point, i never said you cant make a cheap pc, or a reasonably priced gaming rig, that was not the point i was trying to make. I was saying for playing games a console is by far the cheaper option if you want to stay "cutting edge" and this will be noticed even more on the next gen of consoles.
Because let me try and develope my point so you under stand:
1998 - Halflife is out on the PC.............nothing comes close on the console front, at this time the Playstation is still just king and the PS2 is just going to be released, even time splitters doesnt look as slick.
1st round knock out - Winner PC
2004 - Halflife 2 is released with jaw dropping visuals - Metal Gear Solid 3 isnt far off on the visual front and map size but still the PC in general is the over all winner
10th round knock out - Winner PC
2006 - Oblivion is available on all 3 big formats and looks almost identical only on hardcore gaming rigs are you able to see the difference between the 3
Points decision - Winner PC but only just
2011 - Battlefield 3 again all available on the 3 big formats - now here is were it gets interesting
PS3/Xbox Vs 2006 PC that played Oblivion - 3rd Round knock out - Console wins
PS3/Xbox Vs 2011 PC - PC wins again just on points
My point is over the last 13 years the gap between PC gaming output and console gaming has shrunk to almost nothing, and the next gen consoles is more than likely gonna be better at gaming than a high end rig for quite a few years. Please like i have said before I love my PC and will be getting BF3 on my £500 PC that can easily handle the game but thats because i prefer mouse and keyboard. However the moment someone gives me a console that uses mouse and keyboard and can play AAA titles for over 6 years without needing upgrading my days as a PC gamer will be over, thats simple logistics. And if you can give me a platform were my game can be fully developed without any loss of quality that will also be my main target - again its logistics.

Beyond that, who the hell knows?

No, but seriously, it's coming.
I do like my Xbox, picked up a PS3 last year and I hate the controler so much I stopped playing the ps compleatly, gathers dust now
weird how the little things can mean so much.

If they don't they are going to be left in the dust.

you are wrong i can build desent pc for about the same price as consle and it cost less just need to know were to shop and whats wrong with spending good money on pc my brothers pc beats his ps3 and xbox 360 pc has far more perfermance then systems. systems will die first before pc does. the only thing i dont like about consles is them breaking cant fix them your selfs pcs you can. just replace a part. pcs cheper then consles part wise. i been building pcs for 17 years so yeah i know alot abou them memory is cheap lol good video card i good price also and i only spend like 600 on my pc and its good for along time and if i wanted to go cross fire i dont need to replace any thing. pcs last way longer then consles if you upgrade it right. consles you have to buy a whole new one.

Sorry my friend you cant - you can build a web browser at best - a 360 will set you back £160 new, for that money you can get a dual core athlon with 4 gb of ram and on board gfx - im sorry u aint playing didly with that, unless you want browser games or Diablo2. You wont even be able to start BF3 let a lone run it, Skyrim dont make me laugh.

And if you can give me a platform were my game can be fully developed without any loss of quality that will also be my main target - again its logistics.
cool you going to get battle field 3 maybe we can play together some time ^_^ till then i be waiting
