You people are pathetic and shallow. Do you know how hard it is to actually create a game? The developers work day and night to do WHATEVER THEY CAN and all you people are doing are whining like little babies. WHEN A MMORPG COMES OUT! THAT DOESNT MEAN IT IS PERFECT!!! Look at wow. When it started, no one played it and it was FILLED with glitchs and exploits. So for you to think that a game can't have glitches is absurd. In order to create even a the tiniest bit of content, the developers have to work day and night. Stop acting so spoiled and ENJOY THE GAME!!!! DCUO WILL make a comeback so if you don't like it, go play you dumb@ss maplestory and wow while the ADULTS play something better. Please, the next time you write a comment about ANY MMORPG, show some respect to the people who worked their soul out to make you guys happy
Of course they worked to get it out there. And I think that they cared. The problem lies with the design of the game itself. This isn't bugs and glitches, everyone expects that. This is shallow gameplay that does little to hold interest in the longterm. It doesn't help that, despite the DAY and NIGHT the devs worked on the game, basic MMO functions like chat did not work well, neither did a lot of PC MMO basic features. When you see a new game come out based on a AAA IP with glorious CGI trailers and voice overs galore and then login on launch day and can't easily communicate, via chat... that's kind of a big issue.
And sure, that's better now, several months later. Most of the glitches are fixed. In the meantime though, the core game design is still lacking in depth. Will it get fixed? Possibly, but it won't be tommorow, and I doubt it will be by the end of the year. Maybe by this time next year things will begin to look up. If you find the game fun, cool, play and have fun. But please, do try and not FREAK out like someone pushed your mother down the steps if people express some disatisfaction with the current state of things. Judging by the server population level reports, it seems like there is some truth there.

For the record, I DID push his Mom down the steps, so...
Either way, DCUO is quite easily one of the poorest values on the VG market, today. If it were price modeled as a first player game, and they frequently made "content packs" to buy, it would be a very good value. But paying a sub for a game this limited in content and depth... PLUS paying for add'l content...
They all but dared me to vote with my wallet, so I did.
the problem isnt so much dcuo as it is soe. I will never give soe another buck out my wallet they destroyed that game almost as bad as they destroyed swg. How soe gets any franchise titles is beyond me? they just unr franchises into the ground lol. So you can tell your 2 friends but i will be telling my 2 friends and so on how soe destroys franchise titles and has lousy server protection and how i got a call from visa asking if im thailand and trying to purchase 20 thousand dollars in marble flooring LOL.
Yes, ^^ this - more than anything I think.
Gamers forgive but they never forget... oh wait, they really don't forgive either.
Actually, everything coming from SOE in the recent 3-4 years just feels like the player needs to bend over. They nickel and dime you to death.
The diligent, those who have stuck by the game even as their guild members and friends have jumped ship, will experience the new content coming via Fight for the Light, they'll experience the forced population increase of the implementation of the Mega Servers, and those same players who stuck beside the game this whole time will be able to tell their friends
I thought Fight for the Light was a $10 DLC?! Are you suggesting ALL current subscribers/players will have access to it??? If it's paid content, the "diligent" won't be rewarded it, they'll still have to buy it...correct?
And the population doesn't "increase" in a server merge. It simply consolidates. I know that may seem like nit picking, but the 2 words have very different meanings.

You know there are the sayings, well meant is the opposite of well done. And: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I can always respect good intent. But just wanting to make things right is not enough. I mean, a game is not a charity meeting. Its a product I carry my hard earned money to. We aren't talking abut some bugs or some glitches here. We are talking about a game where some of the very fundamental concepts were short sighted; a game which after 2+ years of developing had WAY too less content, where the PC UI was just WRONG.
I can turn the argument all around and say: no on the contrary it is because gamers are way too less critical that we are being given one trash game after another, because the uncritical audience will buy any trash anyway.

Yeah I am very skeptical you played the retail product. As with every other MMO, DCUO doesn't really have a means to be "completed" sure you can do all the missions and such, but the story line doesn't have an ending, there is always another Villain or Brainiac gets away. Also there are other things to do in DCUO to build your character and you didn't mention the PVP either which offers some of the feel of action games, but using the MMO rules.

DCUO is a very high paced game and it doesn't cut corners there (it's how people can rapidly level up). There isn't much grinding which IMHO is an awful way to make your audience spend time (which is money). Crafting is something I would like to see, but with so many items, gear, weapons, etc. it may be difficult to balance. I don't want DCUO just to add features to the game for the sake of keeping up with the Jones', I want them to add features that are relevant gameplay elements.
I bet the game really rebounds when the "Monthly content updates" and "Massive updates" (the ones that Smed said were to justify the sub price) begin. I can't wait
I really think this game could make a come back the combat is amazing and so is everything about the game except there is not much content in the game and the level cap is 30 if they would have added more content and made the level cape like 60-70 the game would have been alot better and would have not died like it did
The combat in DCUO is where it really shines it plays very much like an action title with the rule set of an RPG (add knock backs and stuns basically LOL).
I have not played many MMO's but from what I hear DCUO out of the box (for launch) had more content then most other MMO's out of the box for launch. They have been pretty good with seasonal updates to.
Since the game has launched...
The amount of Raids has Doubled (2 of them are particularly challanging).
Two additional 1 Man Challanges.
Two additional Duos.
Three additional Alerts.
One or Two new PVP areas.
Three or four "Legends" PVP Characters (where you have the chance to play DC heros or villains, lots of fun actually).
Several new gear sets (maybe even close to a dozen).
Several new weapons (maybe even close to a dozen).
They have already Outdated 2 forms of currency to usher in new gear sets.
Populations may be low, but I can tell you, I don't encounter too many a-holes in the game. With the exception of maybe 2 leagues on my servers most of the peeps in game are very nice. Not too many Loot Ninjas, not too many Gear Gods either.
Also someone mentioned the 6 power sets. One thing I notice about the powersets is none of them are a rip off of another. Like Fire Tank has very specific Fire Tank spells and just doesn't feel like a Red ICE TANK. Same goes for all the power sets and weapons. Every one has their own unique feel. From what I gather there are other MMO's out there that basically take 1 powerset and give it a new color and call it a new one.

Actually I do know how hard it is to make a game, but that changes very little. Someone doesn't have to build a game to have an opinion of a game that is being sold to them. Your anger seems to suggest that you know how hard it is to make an mmo.... perhaps an mmo like DCU? Perhaps DCU itself?
Anyhow, WoW was a fun game that around 500,000 people played at release. Bugs and exploits were there, but people enjoyed it enough to continue playing AND spread good word of mouth about the game, which caused more people to join. Wash rinse repeat and you have a success game today.
DCU also had around 500,000 players at release. Bug and exploits were also there, but the gameplay was shallow, incomplete and poorly designed. It struggled to last the initial 30 days and overall is a very poor game, so people left. They had no good word of mouth to say about the game. Wash rinse repeat and you have the failure that is DCU currently.
Gnash your teeth and chastising everyone that doesn't share your view will not change that.
Populations may be low, but I can tell you, I don't encounter too many a-holes in the game.
You don't see them ingame because they are to busy on the forums posting pictures of ponies and running off anyone with a negative word against their beloved $OE
to be honest, I have had a blast playing this game. I haven't had this much fun in a game in years. Yes the launch was horrible, and the network outage was a pain. But I am ok with it.
I look forward to the updates and new powers. as for the other hero mmo's CoX is still fun too, but champs was just horrible. laggy and not fun at all.
I will play this till they take the server down all together.
But if I am being "HONEST"....
A higher lvl cap and more content is badly needed in my openion. I see what they have in store sofar, and it looks promising. But only time will tell.
As for the pay for DLC, that did tick me off a bit. That is something that should be included in the free updates in my humble openion. But hey, that's just my openion.
I really wish they had cross platform play, But I am sure there are reasons why we don't. But I can hope for the future lol. Half my friends play on PC and half on PS3... So I may be looking into buying it for the PS3 aswell lol
So for those of you that like the game: Keep playing hand have fun!
For those that think its a lost cause: Have fun somewhere else lol

David011 -- you are kind of doing the very thing you accuse others of.
In effect you deem the gameplay shallow (with no evidence or comparisions) as well as incomplete and poorly designed calling it over all a very poor game.
Is that not Chastising? Is that not Gnashing your teeth? I can't speak for the PC, but the PS3 did not have as much of a deluge of players leaving the game like the PC did. Populations did lower, but I didn't notice people leaving 30 days in.
Most people left DCUO when the PSN hack brought down the game. PC players had many options that day for MMO entertainment (some went and played RIFT, which I hear has it's own share of issues). Most people on the PS3 stayed with the game, there were a few leagues that broke up and my league got the lion share of the busted up players and now we are about 100 people strong (this is via personal recruiting and not just spam league invites).
I can tell you that if DCUO would have been a single player game, it would have had at least 30-50 hours of content on the disc on day one. That isn't a bad record and for all the crapping on SOE let's aleast commend them for getting things right on that standpoint. There are many other places this game shines with depth, that will not be apparent to someone who played it for a few weeks and stopped.
I too know some things about game development and I am friends with developers who have worked for Sony, RockStar, Activision, etc. One of the things I have heard about MMO development is that the project never really leaves BETA.
IMHO I think the PC MMO Community really has an ax to grind with SOE, these beefs may be completely fair based on their history. SWG updates didn't make everyone happy, I used to play PlanetSide back in the day and sometimes that game would be a mess after an update (which with that game was forgivable in my eyes because there was nothing else like it). The Matrix MMO went tits up too. Matrix, Star Wars and DC are all great IPs and they have a long history that is filled with expectations. SOE didn't have the benefit of making an MMO how they could then fitting a theme around them, they had to make an MMO that lives up to the IP at hand and that is no small feat. Think of how many failed Star Wars games there are vs how many of them got it right. Now how do you scale the ones that got it right into an MMO?
DCUO is no different, I was never much of a comic book fan so perhaps I have less expecations about this title. That being said, I think the fast paced nature of this game gives it a very unique form of gameplay that you generally do not find in MMO games.
You know the level cap will be busted soon, but in all honesty the way the skill trees work you can gain far more abilities after you reach level 30 without the level cap being raised, but of course all you guys complaining about DCUO already knew that right????
article is right, this game is definitely making a comeback
I hope so, I really think people are rushing to judgement about this game.
SOE seems to have some PR issues with the PC crowd and that is fine, but don't shit on DCUO if you have not played it more than a few weeks just because SOE made it. You guys seem to forget that DC is involved with this game, so if you want to spread the blame around, remember DC and WB put their blessings on this as well.
But honestly the kind of feedback I hear from comment trolls is always very generic feedback and doesn't show any evidence of playing the game. For some one to complain about the amount of content on the disc (all of it complete with most of the original WB voiceover talent) really makes me question if they have really played the game.
So when you hear generic feedback take it with a grain of salt.
DCUO is poised to make a comeback because they are in the process of fixing most of the beefs people had with the game. When the MegaServers go live this week there will be no issues with grouping up and getting into instances which is the MAIN issue people complain about DCUO today. So if a DCUO Noob logs in today they may be frustrated by getting into instances. By the end of the week that won't be an issue and whatever platform you play on you will see a large up tick in the populations. It's a win-win except for those people who think SOE is the DEBIL! LOL
I will play this till they take the server down all together.
But if I am being "HONEST"....

I too would like a Higher Level Cap, but I am enjoying the way they created feats to lead to more skill points. Feat farming is the new leveling when you hit level 30 and it's quite addicting and adds a layer to the game via respecing and having a large amount of points to play with in your skills (I am up to 83 skill points now).

In the "I like free stuff" I agree with you in principle, but because of the rocky start with this game I am not at all looking at the DLC as a way for SOE to cash in, they likely need a boost in the revenues for this game.
Also the Green Lantern DLC was never intended to be a seasonal update (like Update 4). From day one Green Lantern DLC was always referred to as a paid expansion pack. Now what I am curious of is will only people that paid for the DLC have access to the new zones? I am hoping (but preparing to be disappointed) that it works like Little Big Planet DLC, meaning as long as your buddy who owns the DLC has room in his group you can get in. We shall see!

The game plays very well on the PS3, there was a week or so of really bad freezing, but since then it's been much much better. Between Update 3 and Update 4 they managed to sprinkle a bit more graphical goodness into the PS3 version and eliminated dreadful pop-in, but there is still some less dreadful pop-in.
PC & PS3 cross platform play would have been really nice, but perhaps there are some instances that are not 100% in sync on the PS3 and PC. Considering that most PC's have well over a Gigabyte of RAM these days I highly doubt you will see any compelling cross platform play in this generation of consoles, I bet this feature is high on the list to make it to PS4 though.

The main thing that made people leave; myself included, was the lack of content and the fast leveling. Have they fixed that? NO. So, don't try to tell me that DCUO is going to make a comeback. No content + fast leveing combined with Light power set now being a DLC will keep me away . SOE is just in it for the quick money then they go on to the PS4 for more quick cash. Sorry but I'll wait around for SW:ToR and GW2 and stay out of DCUO.
DCUO can't make a comeback without going F2P for one simple reason: The majority of the players who are left are lifetime subbers. And in 6 months they're all going to be effectively playing for free anyhow. DCUO will HAVE to institute an expansive MT system for pretty much every bit of new content foing forward in order to get money from the the majority of their player base. They can not give out the free updates promised, and they can't attract new players with a both a sub and MTs for all new content.
So their only choice will be going F2P to both eliminate the "free" advanatage of the lifetime subbers (though I'm sure tehy'll throw them a few dollars in Station Cash) and to attract new players who may convert to paying for MTs.
This game will never ever make a comeback, they can tripple the content and it will never make a comeback. They can do better offcourse but never truly do a comeback.
No mmo have done that other then DDO only reason they managed it was that they went f2p so until that happens dcuo will always be a shadow of what could have been.
They did so much wrong with this game that soe should be ashamed, they have been in this industry since it started and yet they know so little of what the market accept and do not accept.
I do think they knew better, i think dcuo was built from the ground up to fit console. Pc version was just an easy port for em to get more cash
The bottom line is that this game isnt suited to a subscription based payment model. The content just doesnt warrant that sort of investment. If they made it B2P (buy to play) with microtransactions for new dungeons and powers it would probably do well for the more casual crowd. But being the greedy corporate bastards they are, Sony just wants to double dip in both revenue models.
No offense but adding new powers to this game is like adding extra wheels to a car with no engine on a race track that just goes round and round and round.
DCUO sadly wasn't an mmo, it was a single player action gmae that occasionally needed more players to do things but had almost 0 reason to be massive or online.
It was pretty, it was shiny, it was polished to some degree and had potential but in the end it was an action packed pointless romp that swiftly lost steam.
People ask "What happened to the game, the fact is people FINISHED the game and moved on" An mmo that can be finished, beaten etc, that gives the player no incentive to play other then the same sort of fight one gets from level 1 to the end is frankly not an mmo and more games need to realize this. There needs to be more incentive to do things. Just fighting over and over again is not really enough.
Ultima Online was good not for its graphics but for its ability to let you do things like build, grow, train etc, more then just fight. You got a sense of accomplishment from doing those things and DC hasn't offered any alternative at this time. In fact most MMOs make the same mistake. The crop of MMOs as of late have been Massively One dimensional.
This poster summed up my feelings about the game and why I didn't last beyond a month. On the one hand I know that what my idea of an mmo is isn't an absolute, there are some people who may not mind paying a subscription for a game that plays much more like mortal kombat than lotro or any other mmo on the market but for me I've come to expect that if I am going to pay monthly for access to a game (especially one with a premium box fee) then there needs to be compelling alternative content non combat focused.
Without the subscription fee I would still play DCUO and certainly wouldn't mind paying for most if not all the updates they make but simply there isn't enough to allow SOE to keep a hand in my wallet.
As far as the mega server idea the issue at hand with that is to assume that mega servers are going to somehow bring people back to the game we have to wonder why when the servers were full did people continue to quit/let the sub lapse in the first place?
Mega servers are not going to save this game because high populations didn't keep people around in the first place. If they could add features that made this game about more than combat then I could possibly think that things could change but I feel like anyone willing to look will see that with so many "action oriented" mmo's it's not an idea that carries subscriptions well from COH (great game btw) to Champions and STO console first players aren't anytime soon going to see subscribing monthly to games as viable so maybe the devs should shelve the idea that these games will ever be viable subscription mmo's.
The game isn't bad but there is nothing coming down the pipe that will turn this game around at this point in time.

From what I gather there are other MMO's out there that basically take 1 powerset and give it a new color and call it a new one.
These articles should be called "Stranger Things Have Happened". Let's at least have a topic that could actually happen.
You don't see them ingame because they are to busy on the forums posting pictures of ponies and running off anyone with a negative word against their beloved $OE
Only nerds like dc universe online, an there's not many of those these days
article is right, this game is definitely making a comeback
to be honest, I have had a blast playing this game.
LOL
Whelp I've played all the so called popular MMO's from premium to free as well other super hero based MMO's they were
*Yawn*
I guess I enjoy DCUO so much cause I'm old and loved Phantasy Star Online on DreamCast my first online game experience
a game that was heavily based on co-op PvE group missions as well i.e. Alerts
P.S. Nostalgia INB4 I'm Old
