Worried about the combat

ShariShari Member UncommonPosts: 746

It looks way to fast paced for me:(. I love everything else about GW2, the lore (I read the last 2 books and loved them) and the art style (I even purchased the concept art book), but Im no good with fast paced games anymore (my age and reaction speed dictates what I can and can't play nowadays).

I'm not saying it's a bad thing the combat is fast, I know that alot of people love that type of combat however, I feel a little bit like I've been left in the dark with my slowness > 'sad panda'

Ill purchase the game anyways as it's B2p, But I guess I'll be dying alot!

ha well maybe its time for you to try hone your skills at faster paced games, you have a few months so get a knack for it before hand?

  • KillyoxKillyox Member CommonPosts: 424

Just pick warrior, necro or maybe guardian? They don't require as much reflex and quickness as thief for example so they will be more forgiving.

Fast paced combat is precisely what i like about GW2. I also like from time to time play FPS online for their fast pace ^^

I don't think the combat is all that fast-paced. I feel it moves at the same speed as GW1 combat, only with better dodging and no auto-approach. If you want to talk fast combat, go check out DCUO and Vindictus.

Also, to remedy your predicted "slowness" you should play your character in a way that the skills on your bar help you move or in a way that makes you are hard to take down when standing still.

    This is not a game.

Yeah, my suggestions is to create a character based around not moving so much.  like a defensive engineer, or a warrior with a lot of sturdiness type things.

If neccessary, fight content slightly below your level. D:

It is supposed to be playable by most people though, so you might not be able to compete at the high end, but you should be able to at least play and beat the game.

When you put it like that, it doesn't sound to bad:)

Although I am terrible at dodging. If there is dodging available in-game, I do tend to just ignore it (champions online, AOC) lol.

Yea, I like the look of the engineer so maybe I'll try that class first. Hopefully not to much quick reactions required with that class.

One other thing that might make a difference for you is that the fireworks and eye candy are expected to get toned down some since people have been finding it hard to keep up with what's happening on-screen.  I don't know if this applies to you at all, but some of the combat footage out there we've seen, probably makes the game look a bit more confusing than it should be.

If you are in this boat, there are plans afoot to address the problem.

Shari, I recommend trying out one of the free to play games that have action combat, like Vindictus, just to get a feel of a faster pace combat.

I think once you get in there and get used to it you'll be fine.

Its not fast in the fact it will be over so quick, its more you need to keep moving, i dont think you will have any problems to be honest everyone will need to get used to it but it ist fast paced combat like you need this move then instantly this move then this or you will definatly die, its more you need to think about what your doing :)

This game is not fast paced, it's just action filled. This isn't Starcraft, Call of Duty, or Halo. It's not about fast reaction times.

    i couldnt agree more

Well Guild Wars original combat was fast paced too....very different to Gw2 combat but hard.

PvP was brilliant & hard to dominate.... i expected GW2`s combat to be as challenging as it was in  GW...

Anyway i bet some profesions are easier to play than others... for example a warrior vs a thief.

I personally love how the combat in GW2 looks, but then again I love FPS combat as well.

So I can see where the combat would turn some people off.  My prediction is that you'll probably do fine in PvE, but PvP will be tough.  PvP is always more demanding on the player due to the fact that you're fighting a human that is doing everything he can to win.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

High end PvP and PvE just isn't for everyone.

    That's ok, it really is.

Here's the rub that no one ever tells people - why? Becuase they want you to keep chasing the carrot -

You don't NEED the best possible raid/PvP gear from the "end-game" if you aren't going to participate in the end-game content.

I said it, I now expect the MMO gear police to come arrest me for not following the carrot.

Play what you enjoy, push yourself if you want to, not because you feel you have to.

I have a feeling there is going to be plenty for people of all skill levels to do in GW2, so don't worry about not being as fast as the kids, just understand you'll be limited but that it's OK to be limited - because you don't need that stuff to do what you'll be doing.

Pick an engineer, and then select a skill build that compliments strategical setups. Turrets, bombs, landmines, bam. You will still have to move around, but nowhere near as much as a warrior or thief.

This may be the most meaningful post in this thread. Good job. The cool thing is that GW2 actually encourages this type of mentality. Other games, like WoW didn't. At the end of WoW is High end PVP or high-end raiding. Nothing else.

Don’t forget the extensive ingame social element’s. Mini games. replayability and evolving De’s. You may not play the game for the specific reason ‘to be the best, to rule the world’ but you darn well can to have a great time.

This game, above ALL other games, is about friends and community. Everything you do on your realm will involve playing together with other people. Making friends and building those networking relationships. Hell, even when you’re bored and decide to try some world pvp, your doing so while progressing your realms route to victory, which can result in realm wide buffs. When you pop over to the shooting range for some laid back relaxed fun, your score gets saved and is then viewable realm wide. The person who runs by you in the open world isn’t some stranger, he’s your comrade in arms. Is he running away from an overflowing invasion event and needs some help? is he rushing over to help save something?

Everything everyone does is open for you to join in.

I gotta admit that my Razer Naga helped me speed up my play in mmos a ton. Sure a 17 button mouse might seem like a bit much at first, but it works really well. In GW1 all of my skills are controllable by my right thumb which leaves my left hand for total control of my character.

It's a little pricey, but I recommend the Naga to anyone wanting to pvp in mmos.
