You get pet cards (either through the AH, cash shop promos, or random drops) that you will need to "capture" each type of pet. Once you have your card you find that creature type and use a skill called creature taming to bind it (hopefully) to the card. Obviously, rare pets are harder to tame than the more common ones, and there's a big chance that you can waste a card in a failed taming attempt. There are specific classes that have a better chance at taming, though, and most people usually ask a friend or guildie of that class to tame it for them. And even then, sometimes the more rare pets can fail.
Pets gain levels and have their own unique skillsets. Pet roles range from direct damage, buffers and healers, and tanking types. It's possible, with a high level pet (HLP) to steamroll through a lot of the content.
Can anybody here explain how the pet system works in this game?
There are two aspects. The pet card and the pet itself. The previous poster did a nice job of an overview on the pet aspect, but pets can also double as an item that can be equipped by a player. They provide considerable boosts to player primary stats (str, vit, etc.) and secondary stats (p.atk, m.atk, atk spd, etc.). Pets can also be enchanted with a same pet of the same enchantment level. This reduces the pets level back to 1, but has more Job Points (JP) to be used on skills, new skills, higher primary stats, and new slots to equip items. Pets can also produce items based on their unity skill (a buff that it casted on both the player and pet).
Wikia is pretty decent place for information. The only part that is somewhat wrong is the belt stats for pets.

Yeah I completely overlooked explaining the card mechanics of the pet system in my post. Thanks for filling in the gaps...very well written!
hi,im former player of this game, its not topic realted that im writing now but want to let players now.
game is not best but overall it could have potential if it was published by other company beside Galanet.
this company is very corrupt, they dont do anything against item and money sellers, recently
around last half year there was many hackers in this game and people losing everything they had, customer service
of this company doesnt do anything against hackers, they dont even ban them, and players most of them dont get
anything back they had on their accounts and customer support doesnt want to restore anything back to players.
thats most reason why players are leaving this game, until this company runs this game or till they dont replace their
corrupt customer support and GMs its not worth to play this game until you want to get robbed all your time you invested ingame or bought it from item shop and in end you lose all you had, and custpmmer support are saying sorry cant help you.
thats reason i quitted this game, happened same to me like to many other players and hacking happens every day sadly inthere, just to let people know dont invest your time for a game if you will get hacked and lose all you had.
