My advice would be to keep an eye out on server specific forums for groups that play regularly. For example, on the Freedom server, every monday at ~10pm, a group called the Freedom/Monday Night Horde plays. They go through every TF and major story arc over the course of several months, and then switch sides. This is a very open group that just posts a signup list for people to join, often running multiple teams in an evening (averaging about 3 seperate teams).

On a personal note, I actually don't play CoH with my regular gaming friends -- they're achieving types that enjoy the grind of maing out a single character in WoW epics while I prefer varying gameplay and making multiple alts. ( ' :
