Looking For a Game With a Certain Feature.

FourLocoFourLoco Member Posts: 13

Hello, I am looking for a game with the training skill system. Not a level based system.

The training system is similar to the way the Basic Role-Playing system works... and emphasizes developing the character's skills by using them—meaning that if a character wields a sword for some time, he or she will become proficient with it.

There aren't very many games with this feature in it anymore. I've already played Runscape out years ago. Most games now days have them complex and confusing Level-skill systems that I hate very much cause you could end up adding to the wrong skills and not realize it til your too far into it.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm....Pandora Saga has a system like that I believe. I know Final Fantasy XI has that system. You use Daggers, you gain Dagger skill points. When you gain enough Skill levels, you learn new weapon skills for Daggers. ect ect for every weapon in game. Its rather old, but the population is still alive and kicking. If you play though, I cannot stress how important it will be to find a good Linkshell (guilds that you can equip/unequip at whim) You will need as much guidance as possible.

Mabinogi understands and sort of has this system down.

There are no classes, only weapons and skills for you to rank up and have become more effective.

    It's a sand-box, open-world MMO with an amazing story.

However, the execution was kind of... bad.

I don't mind bad graphics, but it was sort of pushing it.

    It's a cell-shaded anime MMO.

Also, the combat is rock-paper-scissors style.

    Punch beats block.

    Block beats counter.

    Counter beats punch.

    etc.

I probably got that wrong but w/e.

Mabinogi's successor, Vindictus is sort of the same thing, but it's class based, meaning you choose your class and you don't get the opportunity to hold a staff if, say, you initally choose to hold swords.

Good suggestions so far. But I was looking for it to kinda be like, if you use spear and shield, your spear skill goes up from attacking, no unlocking moves for skills but just being able to hit harder from having a higher skill. Same with shield exept take less damage when it's high.

Well, like I said, XI does that :> unlocking new skills is just apart of it. Say, if your fighting a level 80 enemy. And you have the Skill level of a level 60. Good Luck, you will miss A LOT unless you have massive Dexterity/Accuracy boosting equipment. Each skill level increased, increases your attack and accuracy by 1. Shield skill, I believe it increases your block rate with the shield.

And in regards to Mabinogi. Its an amazing game, but...I highly caution against going to it now. It is currently plagued with hackers that are Stealing items, duping gold, creating mass inflation ect ect.

I'm about to check out 2moon Dekaron. Hopefully that one isn't as hacked as the first 2moons I played.

There's not too many MMOs that use a skill system in place of a level system. Most that do have skill systems are hybrids. But there are a few pure skill based games out there:

Ultima Online (I'd suggest a free shard over the EA ones though)

Darkfall Online (I'd suggest waiting for 2.0, but fun game and hopefully better with new release)

Runescape (I'm not a fan of this game)

Wurm (Difficult learning curve - but interesting if you enjoy survival and crafting)

    Eve Online (Spreadsheets in space!)

There's probably a few others that I've forgotten or haven't played.
