It is called immersion. These two factions are out to completely wipe out each other so seeing them playing a silly game against each other is what is absurd.
First what's absurd is taking the lore of an IP too seriously to the extent you start puting it before fun, as you're doing. Second, this wasn't an addition based on story, immersion or any of those things, it's sole purpose is having some fun and avoiding regular PVP, at times when the two sides are unbalanced. Most emphasis is on fun, of course.
If Immersion is the problem, you would never have to worry about that if you decide to skip the feature.
Part the disconnect I think is that it's very at odds with the character of how they are portraying the rest of the game....which seems to emphasize story and dramatic narritive and even moral choices.....and then there's "Oh by the way, we've got Huttball too.". It just doesn't seem to line up with the rest of the presentation of the game (IMO)....or at least what it seems to be trying to be.
If this were WOW for example....I could totaly see it. Because WOW doesn't present itself all that seriously in the first place. Half of WOW's content is tongue n' cheek anyway. It's constantly lampooning itself, so another lampoon doesn't feel out of place. That's not generaly the vibe I get from Bioware games....they tend to try to present themselves more seriously.
It's kinda like a slap-stick scene stuck in the middle of a tear-jerker. I mean, even if the scene in isolation is quite funny itself....alot of folks would be like "Ok what the heck was that doing in there?"
It's why I called it "bizarre"..... as it seems a very strange choice that doesn't seem to fit very well with the other things they seem to be aiming for with the game experience.
I mean, if they are going to allow "Huttball" why not allow pink armor....or a companion droid that has a T-shirt saying "I'm with stupid -> " ?
Yeah I see your point. Hell since they've gone this far why not add product placement to the game but tart it up to be Star Warsy.
Hutt dogs, Armoured Hutt Dogs
What kinds of kids eat Armoured Hutt Dogs?
Wookie kids,

The dogs kids love to bite!

To SB fans, please stop making our demographic look bad.Stop invading threads that have nothing to do with sandboxes.
I haven't even read anything in this thread yet and I am greeted by this snappy little jingle. Thank you Tardcore, you made my day. Or rather, you made my parsec. (to appropriately misuse our units of measure.)
I think this is just simply the problem with creating IP based games, especially MMOs. Game play>lore in this type of setting, and essentially that cannot be done without ticking off at least a few hard core fans who scream bloody murder when something they do not see fitting gets added.
I remember when Rune Keepers got added to LOTRO and everyone said how Turbine was destroying it and yada yada yada. The thing is, you have to allow for some additions that may not be 100% fitting. If we didnt, then lightsabers would be 1 hit kills, getting shot in the face with a blaster would kill you, and once you died you were probably dead forever unless you had the credits to have a clone.
While Huttball isnt overly fitting, it can be done in such a way that it does allow, realistically, for Jedi and Sith to be in it. Not every Jedi is a good dooer, and some are willing to do whatever it takes to further the cause of the Republic. As long as we do not start seeing Clone Wars level of retardation in SWTOR, I am fine with Bioware adding things that are not 100% perfectly fitting.
I am sure this has already been said in some for or another in the last 45+ pages but the reason I don't have a problem with huttball boils down to two simple words. "Pod Racing" Mkay? could have been worse, much much worse.

i was considering maybe trying the trial of TOR one day, but with circus acts like this one wrecking every possibility of immersion, i wouldnt touch this game with a stick even if it was f2p.
how do you guys feel about Huttball? will you take your Jedi Master Sage or lvl 80 Inquisitor to play space football when theyre taking a break from seeing into the future, meditating, and toppling empires?
It is a game. A game. A ... g a m e.
So many take these MMOs way too seriously.
i agree, however mmorgs are about immersion, it is a very valid point for a game that wants to keep your interest for years. Stupid little side games historically dont do that, having a rich, sophisticated and accomplished game that embraces the key concepts of a mmorg with honesty does.
however I was going to play, but now ' i wouldnt touch this game with a stick even if it was f2p.' is a bit dramatic and pointless.

Being offended because of a mini game in an MMO is retarded. Its a mini game... You dont have to play it if you dont want to. Yes, it meant to take you out of your immersion if you are looking from breaking away from the long grind. Then, by all means feel free to play Star Wars/ American Gladiator/American Football. If not then do something else. it is an option in a game that has a lot of options. Dont like hutball guess what!? They have crafting... Dont want to craft.. do story missions. Dont want to do that.. play the operations. Oh dont feel like doing that.. then maybe this game isnt for you? Lets try to make a mountain out of a molehill...

Agreed. Yodas more "mystical" explanation in the original trilogy felt much more fitting than this midichlorians nonsense. It gave the feeling that Star Wars was not pure science like Star Trek but had a hint of mysticism to it. All that went out the window with this "scientific" attempt at explaining the Force.
It made me question if these midichlorians were behind the Force powers then why not just cultivate them in a lab and inject them into whoever you want. Just like you can do with lots of different microscopic beings these days.
They should have just left it with the "magic" type explanation which Yoda gave.

I agree op is over-egging with his comments, but he rightly objects to a sticky plaster. Mmorgs are a delicate thing, it is trying to achieve that hard to maintain synergy of its component parts, and mini-games counteract that. We have learned this from the mid 80's until today that mini games reflects a need to add content. Smart developers pay more and add to the core content. Lazy developers or unsophisticated designers 'bolt on stuff' in the belief that this enriches the experience. Long term it does not.

Yeah, Huttball is nothing next to the whole midichlorian thing. Personally tho I like pod racing. I'm willing to bet racing will be in the game at some point since Kotor had both pazaak and swoop racing. I expect they'll add both into the game sooner or later. I'm not entirely sure what the difference is between a pod-racer and a swoop, but either sort of racing works for me.
Lore wise there's no problem with this. Seriously.. if your jedi the game allows you to become dangerously close to sith and visa versa but other than that why does it matter? Every other mmo out there has perfect "immersion" right? Not even close. This is going to be the closest thing to immersion you get and you scoff at it? Funny... oh how some people take their games waaay too seriously.

There's absolutely nothing wrong lore-wise with Huttball. As a matter of fact it fits in very well indeed with what Nar Shadaa is, which is basically the capitol planet of all organized crime in the galaxy. All kinds of gambling, slavery, blood sports, and illegal trade (or at least it would be illegal in the Republic or pretty much anywhere else) takes place here.
The problem people have with Huttball is the idea of jedi playing it. I could see that as a problem if the game were mandatory, but it's not. It's all smoke and mirrors from people who tend not to like the game anyway and are looking for an excuse to rag on it.

You are right there's really none issue as we're not obliged to play it.
Let's add flying drawes and rotting undead as selectable species then. Looks like really fun to me. Dwarf tossing FTW!
Would you like a blue or red pill of Midichlorians with that?
