Not sure if I really wanna encounter the wannabe pseudo-dom/sub/gor crowd anywhere outside of SL, where they are contained, so I'll just say 'non'.
The vast majority of MMO gamers won't tolerate a 10 second stun/mezz/root... I can only imagine how much they'd adore being kidnapped for even 10 minutes.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I play a game like this, and while I have thought of making an Avatar named Buffalo Bob It's mostly for taking prisoners and ransoming them back to their faction, or trading for your own POW's.
I totally don't expect hardly anyone to say yes these days. This is geared towards the Sandbox FFA RP crowd

Besides being a terribly schooly post: You gotta specify kidnapping.
Is my character "blocked" for as long as the enemy party holds me prisoner?
Is it a PvP thing? Like some asshat-funnyd00d can kidnap me and hold me as his personal slave?
Am I at the mercy of the enemy party so I can't do anything to get released (besides trying to talk to 'some guy')?
If any of these questions was answered "yes", I'd refer to my personal iron-rule-of-thumb:
Never give players the ability to make other players life miserable. Never. Ever. The IQ<70-bad-socialisation-deep-seated-emotional-problems-never-got-laid-fraction of the playerbase (conveniently abbreviated as "asshats") usually outnumbers the "normal guy"-fraction by far. So the short answer is: NO!! I don't want to take away non-consensual control from other players in a game and I expect the same from the people I'm willing to play with.

I'm for kidnapping NPC's. But it would'nt work for PC's though. Who would want to get mugged and taken hostage everytime you want out the door ? But it would be great to kidnap other factions NPC leaders and maybe other citizens....ahh hell NM tis a stoopid idea and there are no developers out there who can think their way out of a tissue sack.

In the framework of "RP" sure. I was held prisoner during RP sessions countless times; My character was even tortured. But that only makes for good roleplaying. I'm all for FFA sandbox RP.
Forcing me as a player to lose control over my gameplay experience is something entirely different though.

If it had the right framework I could see that being fun.
Like says a guild has actives online this makes the guild leader capturable. They could capture him but he is still able to command his guild to free him that would be a pretty fun minigame. Add big rewards in that process and something for the captured person to do could possibly work.
Oh did I mention they can torture you while they have you, and permanently effect yoru attributes?
Mostly it is regulated by Military faction leaders, but Asshats have the ability to do it just the same.

Agreed. I'm not sure what TXHurts means by 'these days', as I don't remember a time when MMO gamers were into such design. That's one of the reason why the jalls on the cities in UO rarely ever were used except for jailing dev characters. Even in that linked scenario, when the players left, I put an NPC with scripted replies in the cell so that 1) there was a char there if someone came back and 2) so that I could go run other events.
Outside of the consensual scenario Meridion presents - where the players more than likely have an established RoE prior to such an event occurring - players normally don't appreciate having control of their characters taken from them. Actually, no one really enjoys an externally imposed halt to their paid leisure or entertainment time.

Most MMOs already feature quests whose objective is to either kidnap or free a particular NPC. As a question of fantasy world ethics, I'd say kidnapping is acceptable and realistic in numerous contexts. Concerning the kidnapping of other players, that's a terrible idea purely from a gameplay perspective assuming your character has nothing to do during your period of detainment. I'd just log off and play something else... Any mechanic that encourages players to log off out of boredom is unequivocally a mechanic of poor design.
This is not a casual game that features this mechanic. It is a Heavy RP space sim mmo. I agree that in 99% of games it would be a horrible idea, but in this one you have 5 other alts you can use while captured. You just have to be careful about keeping all your eggs in one basket.

"Maybe" with a big swing towards no. Its up to the rest of the game and the asshat management. Also I'm usually not interested in more than one or two chars in one game.
Well for me No. Not that I despise this games but i'm curious how it works. I'm looking forward to see this kind of game but I'll not going to play it. What I know about RP games is that most of the people play it for some reasons: 1. they want to get out a little bit on reality, 2. they want their inner self to get loose in such a way they will do it in a game, 3. Wanted to do different from what you are doing in real life and 4. You want to have fun.
