What is a Role Playing Game? Personally, I like to define a Role Playing Game as a game that MUST, ABSOLUTELY have three elements. One is a statistical setup for characters that describe certain skills/aspects of that character. Two, it must have some method of increasing and strengthening those statistics (usually but not necessarily by way of the experience/level system). Three, it must have a menu-driven combat system that utilizes the skills/aspects of the characters. Given there are other elements of RPGs that I'll leave out because of their obvious nature, these are the elements that are required for a game to be labeled RPG.

Role-playing video games (commonly referred to as role-playing games or RPGs) is a video game genre with origins in pen-and-paper role-playing games[1] such as Dungeons & Dragons, using much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. The player in RPGs controls one character, or several adventuring party members, fulfilling one or many quests. The major similarities with pen-and-paper games involve developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. Electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

You'll notice there's nothing about playing a role. Instead there is "character development".

Paper and Pencil RPG = acting out a role.

Computer RPG = Character development with stats and gear.

A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.Actions taken within the game succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.

There are several forms of RPG. The original form, sometimes called the tabletop RPG, is conducted through discussion, whereas in live action role-playing games (LARP) players physically perform their characters' actions. In both of these forms, an arranger called a game master (GM) usually decides on the rules and setting to be used and acts as referee, while each of the other players plays the role of a single character.

There you go mister, so did i answer your question?

is getting together with some friends to write a story. It’s joining around a campfire or a dining room to spin some tall tales. Role-playing is being creative and having fun with friends. Role-playing games are stories. You create one of the main characters, and you create a story around your character. The rest of the players also create stories around their characters. And there’s an editor who brings those stories together. In most role-playing games, one person plays the “referee,” who can be thought of as the “Editor” of the story. The Editor will, with input from you if you desire to give any, describe a world or setting. You and your friends, as Players, will take a character and protagonist in this world. You will guide your character through the story that you and your friends are creating. Each player takes a different character, and each character interacts with each other character. Role-playing, in this sense, is very much play-acting in the mind. You imagine what the Editor describes. Then, you imagine your character’s response to this situation, and describe that to the Editor and the other Players. They, in turn, each do the same with their characters.

Are very much like an improvised play. Each player has his or hers character (which can be very different to who he or she really is), which he portrays in the game world (which, again, could be very different to the real world).

One player, however does not play a character. This player is called the Game Master (GM for short), or Storyteller (ST) or Dungeon Master (DM). He is in charge of playing the rest of the world - all the people and creatures the player characters encounter, and to describe the world and the environment itself. The GM is also the arbitrator of whether or not certain actions succeeded. If a player decides to raise his sword and attack an ogre, the GM is the one the decides (with the help of the game rules and some dice, usually) if he hit the monster or not, and what effect did that blow have on the poor monster.

Roll players are people who pretend to be someone else it goes more then just rolling a female toon if you are a guy it is living a fantasty and for most it is a sexual fantasy it toys with deep desires of most who partake in RP or ERP for that matter WoW is infiltrated with many who RP just go to Goldshire or "Pornshire" as been dubbed by many RPers. they are mods written for WoW and other MMO's to identify RPers I personally do not RP but have done research into the subject for the simple fact I also had a lack of understanding on this matter hope this clears it up some.

Role playing is acting out a role, simple as that. When put into the context of a game, it is acting out a role within the limits of the rules that the game allows.

For PnP(pen and paper)  RPGs, those actions are effectively limited only by the imaginations of the player and the referee.

In computer RPGs, the programmers of the game determine exactly what actions you can perform in the game world and it is the program that determines the results, not a human referee.
