New players immediately got confronted with the soulsearching question what they were looking for in pvp and a pvp server and if they were ready to deal with the consequences, good and bad.

Sure, it brought a lot of controversies and heated discussions, but those who went through it and didn't leave immediately got toughened and learnt what it would really be about on the server: stealth, cunning, fleeing like hell when needed  and ruthless, merciless payback when the occasion presented itself, and fair fights were obvious daydreams and an illusion in Conan's Hyborea.

It was fun, if you could stomach it! image But yes, I also know of many people who left because those hurdles just were too big to take and no fun to them at all.

Origin planets and capital planets gank free, ok, that should give new players at least some breathing room to find their footing and spread their wings.

There is "another side to this coin". I kept a level 19 ranger decked in blues just to hunt PKers in White Sands. Killing the gankers was soooooo much fun.image

    HAHAHAAHAHA!!

    These comments are rich,

    @ Maverick,

Seriously, Thank you for bringing up AOC,  PRIME EXAMPLE of "real men" looking to swell up their e-peen thinking they were the shiznit just to get their butts handed to them, then swivvel away to the nearest  Pve Server or unsub all together.

Sure! the battles were great, and they were awesome, but it would be a blatent lie to say they didnt have a part in preventing new subs from coming in,  rage posts on both AOC and mmorpg speak for themselves if you plan on digging up any.

and lets not forget the further hellstorm when funcom, for whatever wisdom why i dont know, took a pvp server's low level instance and turned it into a pve area for lowbies. the answer being obvious, ya to help get subs. but hell, the Damage was done, and those that were there were people that wanted to pvp added a few bystanders - but thats another arguement im not going to dive into, we got enough upset people in this thread as is. image

The most hillarious thing in that game was is watching/hearing a hardcore pvper spend 70 percent of his time in lowbie levels to gank noobs, using a face roll class cuz its  MIN MAXAILICIOUS!, just to raise their  K/D ratio out of the negatives, then come back telling about how uber he is due to having epic lootz from farming bori, only to have himself get rolled by legit players 5 minutes later.

that game for a time one could tell off the bat who was real and who was a entitlement snuffing blowhard hiding behind a pvp guild while barking about like a small puppy juiced up on Speed.

    As for SWTOR, its simple:

lowbie Gankers dont bring in subs, bioware stomped that mechanic to the ground, and other themepark games with

    similar philosophies

    will do the same.

figured to make it bold, red texted, underlined with 47 font...cuz you know, people going blind by look at internet posts 24/7, having to get bigger glasses to read all this fanboy crap then reply saying real men can take it whenever they drop the bar of soap........

    .....

Rofl. Nice touch. And yeah, on the server I was on you'd have those kind of parties too. But after a while people either quit doing it because trying to police an area for days at a stretch wasn't that much fun especially if nothing really changed, or after a while any clear distinction between ganker and anti-ganker ceased to exist with those that stayed and it became all about all-out, unbound PvP image

? That was actually what I was saying, a lot of people got deterred by the harsh nature of FFA PvP and nonstop ganking that they got confronted with barely a few hours into the game image Under that kind of pvp climate, any romantic notion that somebody might have had regarding PvP or fair play in it got sandblasted away very quickly. Funny thing is, it actually did prepare for what to expect on a FFA PvP server and determine if it's something you'd be able to stomach or not. Because after White Sands and Tortage it became more relaxed for a long time until the Kheshatta zone.

Personally, I prefer faction PvP though, preferrably with 3 or more factions. FFA PvP was fun, but also wildly chaotic.

Im loving the replies of people who try to argue that newbie ganking is anything other than a turn off for the vast majority of new players who even  on PVP realms have no real means of dealing with the ganks.

Btw the newbie planets last till about level 10 after that you will start seeing members of the other faction, so you as a max level char might need 2 hits to kill hat new guy who hasnt figured everything out yet, boo hoo.

I think its a good decision and if that makes me a "carebear" well my give'a'monkeys'o'meter will not budge on that.

People are built differently. They are. It's hard to believe I know but it's just the way it is.

Some people are immersed in the story, some like pvp (and full loot at that) and some like to sit around the world and chat with friends and not level.

Some games should be full ffa pvp ganking bonanzas and some "not so much".

No one is going to make you play a game you don't like so there is no worry there.

And yes, I played Lineage 2 for 4 1/2 years, from the start, so I at least have some reference to work from.

As a long time gamer and a very infrequent PvPer, I have no problem with starter worlds AND the starting areas for each planet not allowing PvP even though people are playing on a PvP Server.  In every game I have played that allowed Open World PvP it has been my experience that the immature "newbie gankers" ruin the game for pretty much everyone else.  It's probably the biggest reason that I don't even roll characters on a PvP Server anymore.  I actually like to PvP, but having someone swoop in that is 10 or 15 levels higher than you and kill you every time you try to do something was never fun and I suspect, based on the low population of most PvP servers I have played on, that the majority of other players agree with me.

WoW certainly didn't force the industry to spend 5 times as long developing artistic assets for games. Look at their graphics. WoW didn't cause the industry to make it more expensive than ever to make any game, much less an mmorpg that takes 5 years or longer to get out the door.

If a type of game won't bring in enough customers to even pay for the cost to develop the game, it will not get written. A Hardcore PvP game where there is no safe haven for low level players and players who don't want to bother with PvP falls into the category of 'not enough customers to justify writing'.

Bioware isn't stupid. You don't spend $100 Million or more on a game and then go and piss off the people you need to buy your game.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Personally, if I were designing a game, I'd make it so attacking another player who is (arbitrarily) 8 levels lower than you causes two things to happen:

    1. The attack rebounds without damaging the other player

    2. You are hit with the attack and are immediately changed in to a chicken. And you stay a chicken until you die.

I dont care if it doesnt fit in the lore of the world. Cowards should be treated as such. If you gank people, you are a coward.

    Edit:

Oh and I forgot to mention. If you attack someone who is already engaged with an npc (even if they are in your level range), the npc enrages and attacks you instead.

But then I hate pvp servers, so clearly that sort of play isn't meant for me.

AWWW DAMN IT!!!!! This is a disaster!!

Nothing screams Star Wars more to me than a good newbie face punching.

Before you nay sayers pop in and tell me I'm full of it, what was the scene of Anakin butchering the younglings if not text book newbie ganking?

Sure such behavior may not fit into a Jedi's morals, but the Sith would have no qualms about killing the helpless. I'm sick and tired of game companies making the evil faction nothing more than a pathetic Emo mirrior image of the good guys.

    Safe zones ... PAH!!!

Carebear goes onto darkfall and complains about Ganking

Ganker:  This game isn't for you Go back to WOW!.

PK finds out SWTOR won't let you gank.

Ganker:  This isn't fair, this should be part of the game.

DEV:  This game isn't for you...

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I have found over the years that it tends to be the very young crowd that does alot of the ganking.. or the yoyo's that have no interrest in the game other then to power lv up so that they can greef the low lv's that cant defend themselfs... Im all for Faction PVP within say 10 lv's of each other.. There isnt much chance that the low lv can win.. but there is still the chance... I hate childish gankers that pick on players with 0 chance to defend themselfs.. Hell its so bad most the time that the gankers are so much higher that 10-15 low lv's still dont stand a chance of wining... The only one this is fun for is the kid who is running around screaming i powned you like a 2 year old....  Now dont get me wrong i've played on alot of PVP servers and had a blaaast with alot of people.. even been ganked a few times and that was alright.. they didnt stand there for hours preventing you from questing.. they come threw, kill a few and move on.. In my book this is ok. but im sick of the greefers that sit in a zone forever and prevent other players from playing and enjoying there game... IN no way is there justification to say that 1 players enjoyment should be put ahead of the vast majority of players...

Unbalanced conflict sounds great - if you are on the winning side.

I am all for open world balanced conflict, thank you.

I agree with the point your making, just not how you put it.

Most people in the world DO slaughter women and children.

Very few countries support the Geneva Conventions and practice what some people call "humane" warfare.

I personally don't believe in "humane" war...rather I believe in total war.  Win...get it over...regardless.

I assume you live in a country that supports it or have never seen combat.  Otherwise you would know this for fact.

Most pvp actions in games are no holds barred on purpose.  It's just part of PVP.

That said I'm glad Bioware is doing what they are doing.

Those that prefer the griefing style really don't add anything to a game and ruin a lot for many.

The following quote is directly from Bioware:

"there will be no ganking of newbie players in The Old Republic as all Origin Worlds are sanctuaries that can not be invaded by the other faction. We have no interest in allowing high level players to choke off the supply of new players into the game by ganking them over and over before they have learned the ropes of their class.

To put it bluntly: If that is your fantasy, you will have to find another game, because The Old Republic will not cater to that. For every player who enjoys that particular fantasy, there are a lot of players that don't enjoy being on the receiving end of it. That's a fact, a business lesson learned from existing, still running MMOs.

We think we have plenty of great options for PvP in our game, from Warzones, to Open PvP Objective Areas to Open World PvP on Contested Planets, which will be dangerous territory outside the protective reach of guards and fair game for conflicts.

But if you are expecting something akin to the original Ultima Online or DAoC's Mordred server, you need to look elsewhere."

They've been saying that since long time and that's one of the reason there won't be player bounties in TOR until a looong time.

I thought most mmos did this anyways.  Had "safe zones" or whatever.

I never expected Swtor to be otherwise.  We've known for a very long time that there are faction specific planets that the other side cant even visit.

Im kind of surprised this was even brought up since I figured it was a no brainer to begin with.

  • LukoooneLukooone Member UncommonPosts: 153

I really cant understand the problem with PK and ganking. You got it wrong guys. There is the most fun part of a MMORPG.

I played mmorpgs since UO and, really, it was the funniest gaming experience in all my life, figuring out how to avoid PK/Gankers, joining squads to kill them and take revenge...

If you want another booring game with that silly epic monster that you kill with a 1,2,3[tab] sequence while nobody can attack you in the middle of the fight and nobody can attack you outside certain instanced warzones, congratulations! here is another one, in a few months you will be booooored like you did in Rift,WoW,EQ...

Im start thinking its not the devs fault, its players fault, they want a virtual world BUT :

if nobody can attack me while im low Hey! Not fair, Im lowbie

if nobody can interrupt my epic fight with a legendary black dragon, not fair! I was here before!

if nobody can loot me, I want all my pixel things safe!

if nobody can attack me outside my instanced house/city, lol, no way!

You guys will get what you are asking for : BOREDOM

But, but, but he attacked me when I was low life!

Yes, HE DID, why you cant do the same to him?

Uf that will take me a lot of time...

    HERE IS YOUR QUEST!

Well I'm pretty sure you will feel like shit if you just start the game and you go to a pvp zone trying to finish some quest and you just get ganked every single time you're there. It can be fun for 4 times or so, but getting ganked with 0% chance of fighting back is not fun at all.
