MMORPGs vs. FPS - Which type of game do YOU stand?

Alright, so after being a fan of both MMORPG's and online FPS games myself, i was wandering where the MMORPG folks stands to this matter.

I myself prefer to play an MMORPG of choice full time while playing an occasional FPS game on the other side, but usually after i feel that i have done all i can in the game, or have grown out of it entirely, that i seem to turn towards full time shoot-em-up games like Battlefield 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, COD, or even Americas Army.

So, do you like to play FPS style games around the clock with the occasional MMORPG, or do you play it the other way around, with the FPS game on the side?

Voice your stance on the matter here, and share your views/experiences/questions here.  =))

i can't play FPS they make me motion sick REALLY bad. but i do like 3rd person shooters. and enjoyed Global agendas play style, would like to see that in a true MMO. tab target is getting a bit boring, but fits certain game play like melee.

Obviously the combat in good online FPS games are superior to anything you will find in an MMO. There simply is no MMO PvP that can compare to the strategy and gameplay satisfaction in titles like Counter Strike, Crysis or Halo. If this wasn't the case then nobody would bother playing them, because everything else about MMOs (the progression, the roleplaying elements, the community) are usually far better thought out in MMOs than in their non-MMO equivalents.

It gets a little tricky when you're talking about guild vs guild combat or some other sort of PvP that is only inherently possible in an MMO game... but for the most part, would you rather do team based battles in Battlefield 3 or APB? It isn't a hard choice.

I've actually spent time on both sides of this fence. Years ago, I was a full time Counterstrike-er. Shortly after, Everquest became my poison. Countless months were spent there. DAoC, similar to EQ, yet for a shorter time period. Americas Army and BF2 have taken their share of my time. Currently I'm active on Face of Mankind, which can be described as an MMORPFPS. It's sort of both.

I guess I'm the type of person that finds a solid and quality game to spend my time on. I can get lost in all sorts of games, FPS, RTS, MMO, traditional RPGs. It's not the type of game, but rather the quality of it. The question for me is not which type, but rather for how long.

I'll still make a stand on MMORPG, one thing about mmorpg you get to level your character meet new friends, join an active guild, do some sharing of guild revenue, a challenge from guild to guild battle and if your a little bit of a loner you can just enjoy the story line.

Most of the FPS I play are just short games, the things you can do is just, shoot people and enjoy your winning streak on gunning down people.

Both type of game were good. It only depends on the players which gaming style do they prefer and satisfy with. I've been playing a lot of MMORPGs until an online FPS game been introduced to me. Shooting some player inside the game made me think and realize that it is much cooler than killing some feeble mobs in online rpg world. I just found my contentment on playing online FPS games more than MMORPGs. But I think MMORPGFPS thing sounds cool and new enjoyment for me.

I can't stand MMORPG's because there is no real skill to them in terms of actual combat. There's nothing intense about it to me at all when I know I'm just pressing the appropriate hot key. With a good fps kills are satisfying, and teamwork occurs naturally. Not to mention everyone usually has an equal level of fire power instead of just levels. So until Infinity the quest for earth comes out, no MMORPG's for me.

MMORPG's are definitely my priority. I still play WoW first and foremost... call me mainstream, I don't really care... I've been playing it for nearly 7 years now... call me old fashioned, I don't care... I've never got bored of the game yet. Gaming is generally a secondary thing for me anyway (well, secondary hobby after music, which obviously come after the more important things in life) so I don't have an awful lot of time to play games. If I do delve into other games it tends to be MMO's or RPG's (or MMORGP's). However I also enjoy a good blast on an FPS game once every blue moon just for some easy going gameplay. It's not something I could see myself getting addicted to like some people manage to, but I do enjoy them (just not as much as MMORPG's).

I kind of swapped from fps to mmorpg a long time ago, fps game were really my main games in the Quake time, which is still my best fps. I play both but mmo just take 95% of my gaming time. And it seam even harder for me to find a good fps that suit my taste as it to find a good mmo, i'm not much in to the military kind of fps and they flowed the market this last decade, and console fps is really not my stuff either.

Both have their places. I will be getting GW2 and BF3. And I'm 100% positive I will have an absolute blast playing both.

    MMORPGs 95-2000

    FPS 2000-Present

Even FPS games haven't really been anything special for me the last 6 years or so after my Desert Combat clan started to die out with the launch of BF2. I still play games, but age really does take away the obsession factor.

Don't get me wrong I like both but I came across an article saying that MMORPG pvp is broken and unfair. I came to realize some of its fine points such as gear gap, time investment, class compositions, and strength of numbers. No matter how skillful you are, if there is a huge discrepancy in GS, you're dead. If the person has played more hours than you and has acquired gear, you're dead. If you're a warlock and you encounter a good rogue, you're dead. If you encounter 3-4 people, you're most likely dead. However, in FPS more likely than not everyone is equal in terms of equipment perks etc etc. This is where skill comes to play since everyone is equal in terms. I'm not saying FPS is not broken but it is more balanced than mmorpg pvp.

    Any comments will be appreciated.

P.S.: Pls don't say I suck at pvp or tell me to l2p

Last FPS I played was a few months of Unreal Tournament 2004.  What sold me on that was the vehicle system.  Great fun.

Later that year I started MMORPGs and have been playing them since.

Does it seem to anyone that as you get older (30 years plus), that there is an inherent disadvantage when competeing in first person shooters? Specificly games like Rainbow Six Vegas that should potentialy level the field beetween strategists and run-and-gunners still seem to favor the fastest trigger finger. I've never seen a shooter where taking cover was as effective a tactic as moving fast and shooting faster. I've personally tried both techniques and despite being a little twitchy on the stick and having slightly slower reflexes, my kill count is higher and my death count lower when I throw caution to the wind and go on a rmpage. Don't get me wrong, this is also fun but occasionally I would like to see good tactics actually become a viable strategy.

Hmm, well personally I prefer MMORPG PvP, why? First of all the options, multiple classes, specs and gear to choose from so you can pick your favorite play-style. While in most cases a large gear difference can make the kill easy for a better geared player, I've cases where two smart 3.5kgs-4kgs players took down a 5.5k-6kgs rather easily. MMORPG PvP requires much more strategy and thought, who to target, rotations, and what objectives to head for. FPS PvP to me (yes I've played plenty of it) is not far beyond point and shoot and button tricks with the controller. The major difference is the pace of the game where MMORPG PvP takes a LOT longer than FPS where you can instantly kill someone where two evenly geared and skilled players in MMORPG can take 30 seconds to minutes for a victor to come through.

I like both types. But I'm looking out for a good MMO more so than an FPS these days.

My days of playing FPS' obsessively seem to be over for now, although BF3 could change that.

    O_o o_O

  • majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

MMORPGs come and go, but Team Fortress 2, now that you can trust. :)

I play MMORPs every now and then, sometimes this, sometimes that, but TF2 I'm always returning to.

The best are of course FPS MMORPGs. Or MMORPGs with optional FPS like FE.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Same here, but I think that's because the FPS genre has stabilized itself since like...1990. There doesn't seem to be the confusion over what an FPS is; not like with MMORPG.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

The only game that involves 'thought' is GuildWars, because it takes some skill to play. Twitch based skill is great, but MMOs don't provide 'thought' based skill in a game. WoW is mind numbingly boring with that regard. Monsters are stupid, just attack and run away when low on hps, PvP is even worse because it takes ZERO skill to participate in... just a little common sense and making sure you are the right class vs the right class. Ultima Online (OLDSCHOOL version) was probably the best in incorporating skill into gameplay, too bad it got nerfed to hell.

Anyways, it's what you make of it.. I like FPSes a lot, and I like MMOs too. Just have fun playing and don't get caught up in the hype. image

FPSs are about stragety and reaction time. With stragety, the goal is to be pointing at your enemy when they're not pointed at you. This requires forethought, diversionary actions, and damn good luck+guesswork. As for reaction time, it is the differential for when stragety is not enough. Whoever's faster, wins. Dexterity plays a huge role in reaction time.

    • More "tournament-style" games with projectile-based gameplay (UT series is a prime example) put less emphasis on stragety, with more on reaction time, dexterity, and basic trigonometry.

MMORPGs are, down to the most basic understanding, a game of whack-a-mole. Players meet and both use "skills", actions that provide a utility that give them an advantage over the other player, and the opposite does the same. Both counter each other's utility with one of their own. The winner is the one who was the most effective at countering the other. This is assuming both players are on equal footing. When not, the advantages are skewed towards the one with better gear.

    • More "Quest based" Dungeon runs and seige wars

Mmorpg pvp kinda sucks, if u want skill then moba or fps is for u too bad wow went the way of okgz im so guuud i haz 12352361234546325152 keybindzz !!!111!1. Instead of making skills targetable where your actual skill would matter, Chronicles of Spellborn tried it, but that game failed, dunno why the bit i tried it i liked it, you targeted your skills not just select target and smash your face against keyboard til hes dead. FPS games seem like they are more walk-on friendly, but you get people in both that dominate games/the game. Gear does tend to exaggerate the skill gaps though.

I  play  Civilization and some rpg games on the side. I do not play FPS games.

Well, im not a fond of MMORPGs but i could share you some advantages and disadvantages of playing fps games with mouse or controller :

Mouse: Accuracy, too good of accuracy if I may say. I never held a gun before but I doubt most ppl would be accurate as they are with a gun as they are with pointing and click.

Disadvantage: My mouse doesn't vibrate which gets me into the game person.

Keyboard controls feel kind of weird to me even tho I've been using a keyboard my entire life. Used to play math blasters or whatever it was called on the keyboard back in 1992-1993 when I was much younger.

Controller: Vibrations and trigger buttons that feel like you are in the game a bit more.

Disadvantage: Alot harder to aim than it is with a mouse.

I'm that oddball on here who does pc gaming mostly with controllers. And I know some of you despise pc gaming on first person shooters with a controller.

I got burned out on FPS awhile back.  I played a good deal of Halo 2 back in the day.  Had fun but that was it for me.  Ive played some as a kid, like Doom, Wolfenstein and everything up till Halo 2.

Now?  The games I seem to prefer that do have a FPS element have to have an RPG aspect.  Such as Fallout 3 and even Borderlands.  Im not statisfied with just running down hallways and mowing down people on linear paths.  I want some RPG with my FPS.   Multiplayer can be fun, but it gets old for me after a few weeks.  Repetitive.

As far as mmorpgs go, I enjoye PVP a little better there, because I like to quest and then play it as a diversion for hours or even days.  Theres a lot of wicked stuff happening on screen all around you.  Its not usually very twitch game play though.  Id almost say it was more strategic but then so are FPS.

I think FPS multiplayer can offer a far more adrenaline filled rush, and I think it takes a certain steady hand, and skill to succeed.   Ive always felt mmo PvP was just a crazy rush of madness with fireworks, blood, and general insanity.  I prefer mmo PvP.  Only because I got burned out on the other long ago.  I can only shoot so many players in the head or be blown to bits myself, before It just gets redundant.

I love both types equally. Probably spend on average equal amounts of time in both types of games. Currently for MMO's I'm playing LOTRO, EQ2X, AOC, and I dabble in a lot of the free to play ones as well. Not as often or for as long, but I do enjoy seeing what they are like. Shooters I currently play BC2, TF2, and ARMA2 (a lot of 2's there), and I have pre-ordered BF3.

In the end, I play a lot of stuff. Retired 8 years ago and thankfully have a wife and daughter that love gaming as much as I do.
