I'm having a hell of a time leveling my character. I am a new FFXI player.
Initially I made a white mage but I couldn't kill a damn thing. So someone told me to switch it to black mage through my house, while I could actually kill something. Still, I run through my mana on 1 mob then end up sitting for 2 min. This seems very inefficient so I'm wondering if someone could point out what I'm supposed to be doing, where I'm supposed to be leveling (I am currently in west surataba). I am on the Odin server, name Narc.

Leveling a mage always has been hard, because of the low str, low hp, low eva, low everything battle-related (even lower if you are a taru). What I did was 1 nuke and then melee with a club. That was before Fields of Valor was implemented, now you can do the training regimes from the book, for little extra exp and tabs, which you can use to buy temporary buffs, specially interesting buffs would be Protect (+def white magic), Regen (1hp regeneration every 3secs) and Refresh (1mp every 3 secs). The 3 buffs cost like 50 tabs and last for 1hr i think. All those buffs basically reduce your resting time to 0, and you could do more nukes per mob, therefore killing faster.
At level 19-20 you should get someone to do the subjob quest for you (allows to have 2 jobs at the same time, read more on the wiki) and take you to jeuno (main city atm) where you will be able to do the chocobo license quest and do party till 37 via level sync.
The most important part is to get in a helpful ls, thats the clue to run through the low levels asap.
