This isn't the place to have this discussion again, but I'll chirp in. SMITE and Wrath of Heroes are actually quite a bit more like MMOs than RTS, at least from a controls and mechanics sort of way. Rise of Immortals has the shared public space part too, which brings it halfway between MMORTS and MOBA. The ones that push the limits of "MMO" a bit more are League of Legends and the like. I can see your argument there. That said, the coverage will probably keep on this site, as it's proven we've got an audience for them. And we do categorize as much as possible, with future enhancements for this on the way.
I dont object to MOBA's being listed here, however, I do think a Reorginization is definately in order. As one who comes to this site to look primarily for MMO style RPG's IE: EQ, Warhammer, Not WOW, etc...I get tired of browsing through all of the trash games looking for the normal games. I am personally not interested in browser stuff, free to play or even asian style conversion games. The ability to sort all of that stuff out of my viewing would greatly enhance my enjoyment and usage of this webiste.
I do enjoy MOBA's and do see a place for them on this website, however, I understand many do not. The ability to look at the catagories clearly sorted would be very nice.
must admit, i'd never heard of the term MOBA before either.. if it was a game where you could create your own toons etc it might be interesting.. but using a bunch of pre-generated toons in continous cycle of battlegrounds... tbh, i'd rather play Left4Dead .. then again.. i never saw the appeal of LoL either, so i am kind of curious.. do these kinds of games appeal to MMO players generally, because as a player heavily into PvP i have to say i really don't get it... ?

I suspect the appeal of MOBA games are that it is PVP without the 'grind'.

This article got me fired up, but i wish the poster had some moba experience. Just to tell his feelings about the more intricate mechanics and even balance.
Agreed. I did not know what "MOBA" stood for until I started reading this. I have seen the (very stupid) acronym in StarCraft II a lot and referenced in some conversations. Well, now I wish I did not know. It is a horrible, horrible genre to categorize a game.

This is in the works.

This game looks more and more interesting. Might even end up a WoW killer
Roflmao .... always enjoy a good laugh at breakfast
Actually, I'm not sure it's much of a joke. There has been a significant migration of players, particularly of high-level PvP players, from WoW to LoL. LoL has well over a million accounts, and a significant number of those are active players. As MMO subscriptions have been stagnating over the last couple of years, MOBAs have exploded in interest. The big developers obviously have been paying attention, which is why there have been so many MOBA announcements recently, even from companies like Mythic that typically focus on MMORPGs.

I am not sure how wide the appeal is to the average mmo player, however, the nice thing about MOBA's in general is there is little time investment needed to get into the heart of the game. This is great for people who either dont have a lot of free time but want to have an rpg style pvp experience. It is also great for people between games (like me currently). You get tired of your old game and nothing is out that is very appealing. You can jump right into one of these with little monetary investment, especialy as most of these are now F2P. They are great chunks of fun in 20 to 40 minute bites.
For those who resist the idea of the pregenerated characters. I too was hesitant at first, however, this actually can be better due to the fact that each character can be made to be truly unique, there is a wide variety of playstyles available, the games can be balanced much easier and with the MOBA's that have been around a decent amount of time there is literrally a hero that suits everyones playstyle with just the right mix of skills.
Depending on the MOBA you may end up playing...think of them as bite sized morsels of MMO. If you havent played one yet...you shouuld try one out and just see if you dont get hooked . I had some great fun with Heroes of Newearth about 6 to 8 months ago. No idea what the game is like now. I didnt think I would like it either myself but it gave me about 3 to 4 months of entertainment.

So anyone who likes competing with others in games is an a.d.d-riddled teen? Hmmm ok
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
I have a lot of fun with League of Legends and Global Agenda so I will definitely be trying this one out when it is ready
I can not wait for this game. I love the idea of LOL but the overhead RTS feel has kept me away from the whole MOBA genre.

Protip, not everyone knows what a MOBA is, using a term as if they do won't help it catch on.
I cannot possibly concur greater.
How did you put these two game genres together in the same sentance?
well thats easy. LoL and SMITE both being MOBAs and Global Agenda and SMITE both being made by Hi Rez studios.

I really hate the Term MOBA to be apply to DotA Games
DotA = AOS (Aeon Of Strike), proper name Action RTS / RPS.
MOBA sounds like Arena RPG Map with no creep lanes.
Without territory gains, I don't think I can get into any MOBA or FPS =/
Seeing as the this is a video game about gods, I'd like to see the Flying Spaghetti Monster in there with all his* noodly appendages!
* Her? Its?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

what do you expect, the goddess of hanging boobies?
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Rather have a simple top down 2D moba.
It should go Fun>Gameplay>Graphics
Instead people look for Graphics>Gameplay>Fun
By people I mean super unintelligent cyborgs.
Expect 5 more new MOBAs annoucements by the end of 2011.
So are the Battlefield games examples of MOBAs?
