MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy has found a lot to like in The Secret World. But nothing strikes his fancy so much as the excitement that is brewing about the three factions that will be featured in the game on launch next year. See why Bill is swelling with pride over the Illuminati (though Templars are best!) and why faction pride is going to play a big part in The Secret World. Leave a comment or two after you're done reading!
Players of DAOC will always remember the game, not because it was necessarily the best of its class, but because its three-faction warfare made you truly care about your character, you guild, and your entire Realm. It didn’t matter if you had quests to do or dungeons to crawl… if the other realms were threatening yours, you dropped everything and charged into battle against them. Alliances were made, broken, and abused in the name of “Realm Pride.” I’m getting this feeling once more with the recent Secret War beta campaign for The Secret World.

In The Secret World, I am a Templar. There is no purpose greater than ours. The world will founder without structure and discipline.
they have already said the business model is Sub with a cosmetic cash shop (so basically like WOW)
Templars all the way...

An Illuminati that actually got something right: 3 factions is the way to go!
More like EQ2 than WoW because WoW never had appearance armor and gear in it's "shop," nor can you reach the shop from ingame, which I'm assuming since it's a cash shop proper, that like EQ2's Marketplace you'll be able to open it up ingame. WoW's isn't like that...or at least WASN'T last I knew.

From facebook and the forums the faction balance is Dragon then Illuminati with Templar pulling up the rear

Wait, aren't the Templars also religious like....zealots? Too right wing fundie for me. I think I'm with the dragons who want balance and polarity.

And if we have to burn down the village to get the message across, well, they should have listened the first time we told the score.

Precisely. I’m happily signed up and enlisted as Templar also. 3-faction is definitely the right way to start with anything remotely factional meaninful, and glad that this will be one of 2 potentially meaningful 3-faction mmo's heading our way; the other one being Prime.
i was about to go dragons, but actually i saw the masses of dragons that crowd the forums nowadays (it's like 4k to 2k to 2k or sth like it)
and since i did not want to join the zerg AGAIN..... templar, here i come!

Last time I checked there were a whole lot of asians over there in asia.
While I understand the single faction per server thing, in reality, I'm afraid it will only penalize those without the cash to purchase multiple accounts rather than denying people the ability to spy on/sabotage the other factions. It's a great idea, but I just don't know that it's going to work out that well in the end.
That said, I still fondly remember Mid/Igraine, and I hope this game's factions make the experience as memorable.
Illuminati here and cant wait for this.. its the only up coming MMORPG that im really looking forward too
Hi Khorvik, I'm also from igraine (hib side), and have great memories of the realm dynamics on that server and in DAoC overall. While I'm typically not a fan of this genre of MMO, the 3-factions + pvp = very interested in this game.
They can adjust a game all day, but they can't help the issue between the keyboard and the chair.
Played: UO, DAoC, AC, WoW, EVE, TR, WAR, Aion, Rift, SWTOR, GW2, TSW, ESO, Elite:D

It'll be interesting to how this pans out. Games with just 2 factions haven't invoked the same level of pride that DAoC originally inspired.
DAoC had one of those "firsts", the RvR was fresh and new aspect. The frontiers and this "RvR" were new and unknown to players, and I think that provided the foundation for some great early memories of DAoC. It was largely player driven as DAoCs PVE content was lacking... There was no story to pull you in, your pride and fondness for you realm was largely driven my you and your fellow players.
Funcom has already done a good job of getting players interested and committed to the different factions. It is interesting to see discussions that go back and forth, players putting up the good fight for their chosen faction. I think if they can deliver on the story and narrative qualities to keep players interested, that will be a huge boon to the health of the pvp aspect.
Here's to hoping their pvp designs pan out. AoC never quite "got it" and it shows as the game is mostly praised for its pve content now a days.
Per Server faction lock is only a negative. It won't help "realm pride" at all. If you have to have a server faction lock to have realm pride as your character, you shouldn't be playing an RPG and pretending to have realm pride.
Preach it, brother!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I second that! And anyone who looks back will turn to ashes!
Bah Dragons, it's funny how people try to create order (cabals) in chaos, walking contradiction those Dragons. I say make them fit their style if you play a Dragon you can't form a cabal. ;-P
Though I know you were joking but I am still going to play off it... there is nothing right wing about the Templars. They are just people recruited off the streets and given all the gear they could need to fight evil as Funcom said "New Blood". So basically you can believe what ever you want and still be a Templar, more order then the Dragons and less devil worshiping then the O.T.O. err... Illumitati. ^^
As the Templar say, “We don't just fight in the war against evil. We ARE the war against evil!”
Because flying a Minmatar ship is like going down a flight of stairs on an office chair while firing an Uzi.
Huh?
Basically you are saying it was a failure in DAoC? Not my experience.
Thanks for the heads up that The Secret world is yet an other fation-based ganking pvP MMO. FunCom can try all they want to add depth in the game, but when you're talking factions, it's always gank or be ganked...
*moves on to next MMO under development*
Er...not at all.
It's entirely possible there will be PvP servers, but I'm not sure how they'll work out, since groups for PvE content can be composed of all three factions. Templars, Dragons and Illuminati can be in the same PvE group. Groups in PvP content are single faction only. Currently, the only PvP content I've seen is battlegrounds.
** edit **
There will be no PvP servers so no generalized World PvP. There will be instanced battle zones and then a persistent world zone for PvP with server wide faction benefits for holding the zone. So no ganking at all unless you deliberately walk into the PvP zones or enter a PvP battleground.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The Illuminati have been mocking the Templars and their self righteous attitude. This "Holier than thou" attitude makes all the illuminati chuckle and laugh, leaving them eager to watch the Templars fail. The Templars are nothing more then a bunch of misguided sheep with no more intelligence then the bile that flows from a diseased dog.
The Templars are sick of the indignance of the illuminati, hoping they choke on their misbegotten gains and power. They would love to show them what real power is, and crush them beneath the hammer of truth. The illuminati condone the life of lust and frivalty, and should be wiped from this good earth because they are the plague, and every foul stench is a result of their mark.
As a Dragon, I know this to be true.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
DRAGONS!
I got to say, I've not played a second of this game yet, but the community on facebook and around the web has been pretty fun to be around.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
