Look, I didn't ask what a sandbox is. I'm wanting to try one out, not trying to tweak my prefrences of what I like- I don't even konw yet.
I just want a sandbox that actually has other people to play with... lots of them. LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE TO PLAY WITH. Got it? I don't care how much control it gives you, or what features it has. I want to try out a sandbox mmo that has tons of other people playing that I can interact with. If you're not gonna suggest a game with lots of people, dont post.

Ok so I decided to try out the sandbox genre, just for kicks, and tried Eve cause from everything I've read it seemed like the most popular... but it seems to me to be more like a single player game with a chat box...
So what's the second most popular sandbox?

If you want REAL sandbox wurm online, real sandbox games are far and few between.
i would disagree and say, that just like everything else in life, there are varying degrees.
how sandboxy do you want to get? Wurm's java based system will let you manipulate just about anything in game, however, i found the ui anit-intuitive at best.
do just want housing, intense and purposeful crafting? or do you want complete control over the environment and storyline?
the latter *are* very difficult to find, as the quoted poster suggests. and frankly Wurm comes closest to that. Xyson did some of that as well, though im not sure if its still around now.
the former are a bit easier to find. Vanguard is a completely open world with 3 current continents, noninstanced dungeons, deep crafting: boat, house, guild center building; and gear that's actually worth something ingame for you or your alts.
then there's Ryzom. again intense and purposeful crafting, a skill based advancement system: which if you had the time and wherewithal to do it you could level every skill in the game. storyline can be affected by player actions in GM run events.
then there's Istaria. while it is a class based system, you can level all crafting and adventuring classes to max, given the time and desire to do so.
some enjoy Mortal Online or Darkfall, although there is quite a bit of controversy concerning both games and their management/owners.
i think more details would help us help you.

Might be just me but I dont concider Eve a sandbox.
Personally the most fun Ive had was in Darkfall, but with the upcoming DF2.0 patch I wouldnt recommend it to new players.
After the patch it will definitly be worth it.
I would recommend trying out the Dawntide Beta or wait for the release on October 1st.
Wurm is also pretty good and its free to play.
If you can stand the graphics take a look at http://www.havenandhearth.com <- Spend many nights on this game building my settlement
This
Wurm is the best sandbox imo.
Healthy population, many updates & 2 new servers opening this week

I recommed Fallen Earth, I've recently subbed (quit shortly after release) and it's come a long way. A reasonable comparison would be something like Fallout 3 (or NV) online. Almost everything in the game can be crafted, it has a classless system, fps style gameplay and pretty huge zones. It's also going F2P next month.
Who said Eve is not a sandbox should learn what sandbox genre means, before talking like a fool.
Actually there are just a couple of sandboxish mmorpgs that deserve to be played:
Eve/Perpetuum, Mabinogi (not the Heroes one of course) and Fallen Earth after the upcoming F2p conversion.
Everything else (Xsyon, Earthrise, Darkfall, Mortal...) doesn't deserve your time.
