Insomnia in an apartment. What to do?

modjoe86modjoe86 Member UncommonPosts: 4,050

So I live in an apartment with fairly thin walls, but only have one neighbor adjacent to my unit. By thin I mean I can hear my neighbor pouring her cereal in the morning, baby crying, etc. She is a 20-something single mom with a baby.

I'm a very respectful neighbor. I keep my tv at a reasonable volume all the time, and even more reasonable after 10 or so. If friends are over I shush them if they start yelling. I don't slam doors. Etc etc etc. Anyway, tonight I can't sleep so I'm just going to stay up until work time. (I feel better on 0 hrs sleep than I do on 2-3 hrs sleep, and I'm sure I'm not the only one).

My question is: would it be inappropriate or inconsiderate for me to play a movie at 3 am? Open my loud ass back door to smoke? Or am I looking too far into this whole thing? I'm just not sure if I'm worrying about it too much or if it would be a dick move for me to do my own thing at a reasonable volume.

Here are some more natural remedies collected from various sources that will help you sleep better:

    1. Ensure that the room you sleep in has adequate ventilation and is peaceful.

    2. Do a small prayer before retiring to reduce stress.

    3. Reading good, inspiring books will help you sleep better.

    4. Two drops of sesame/castor oil applied to foot and eyelids will make you sleepy.

    5. A blue colored bed lamp will calm the brain and induce peaceful sleep.

    6. Certain classical music ragas like Bhairavi can work wonders on hard core insomniacs.

    7. Soak your feet in warm water for ten minutes before retiring.

    8. Take deep breaths. With each breath you inhale, smile and imagine you breathe in happiness and positive energy, and with each outgoing breath imagine you are exhaling stress, worries and tension.

    Hookup with the single mom.

Then move somewhere that doesn't have paper walls.

    Everybody wins.

I dont think the Sky Wizards particulary care if the OP gets a good nights sleep or not, just relaxing with a good book will work better and solve his noise problem.

Do what I did.  My 18 yr old Daughter moved in with me and stays up all hours of the night.  I go to bed like 10 pm.  I went ahead and bought these wireless stereo heaadphones that connect to the TV.  Now we can watch TV as loud as we want and neither one of us can hear the other with our different schedules.

Technically, he's correct, but not because of "sky wizards". The act of meaningful prayer has a tendency to calm the mind.

Of course, the problem with attributing this fact to an ethereal source is that other actions have the exact same, and often greater, effect. Meditation techniques are often used as a very effective form of sleep aid. Number 8 on his list for example is an example of a meditation technique known as Pranayama Yoga. (not sure about the spelling there) .

If anything, I like to think of prayer as a specific form of meditation. One that may be less effective than others, but is easier to learn.

As to the original question, if I'm in a situation where I do not wish to disturb others with noise, I just use a good pair of headphones.

Charlie: There's some sort of weird chemical reaction that happens when you combine cat food, beer, and glue. It makes you feel, like, extremely sick and tired, and you're able to fall asleep!

Dee: Why would I wanna make myself extremely sick and tired?

Charlie: 'Cause there's gonna be about fifty cats howling outside that window all night long, and you have no idea how loud fifty cats can be.

While treating underlying physical and mental issues is a good first step, it may not be enough to cure your insomnia. You also need to look at your daily habits. Some of the things you’re doing to cope with insomnia may actually be making the problem worse. For example, maybe you’re using sleeping pills or alcohol to fall asleep, which disrupts sleep even more over the long-term. Or maybe you drink excessive amounts of coffee during the day, making it harder to fall asleep later. Oftentimes, changing the habits that are reinforcing sleeplessness is enough to overcome the insomnia altogether. It may take a few days for your body to get used to the change, but once you do, you will sleep better.

@ kids and other virgins in this thread advising him to fuck the single mom:

Do you know what a baby does to a vagina? Watch a woman giving birth and come back to me. Babies turn vaginas into bowls of soup.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Not only that, but throwing a kid into the situation would just make the whole unable to sleep thing worse.

If the baby is crying a lot it's probably around 3 months old and 6 weeks after birth a women will usually be physically able - whether she's emotionally willing is another story.

I agree with you that it's not a practical  solution to his problem and I would go on to say that it will most likely add many new problems.

Headphone advice was best if you can sleep with a headphone.

    Hmmm....  I think you're confused.

The solution is the move somewhere that doesn't have paper walls. Being close to the same area as the OP, I can say there is no shortage of decent housing at decent prices.

Hooking up with the single mom is just because it have no repercussions because of the solution.

He has a problem sleeping now and moving out of that apartment a few days to a few months from now isn't gonna help him.

Headphones or even ear plugs will give him help right now.

Hooking up with the mom doesn't solve anything at all and the repercussions  can be anywhere from a continuation of his current situation to him taking on additional parental duties.

People seem to have gotten the wrong impression. Joe's insomnia has little to nothing to do with his neighbor's actions. (I'm assuming, he didn't mention anything.)

His concern is not letting HIS actions due to lack of sleep wake up/disturb the neighbor.

    • See a Doctor - Insomnia can be a symptom of physical disorders, although for most of us it's the result of tension, stress and anxiety—and of course the more anxious we get about our insomnia, the worse it gets. If your doctor pronounces you a "healthy" insomniac, he might suggest some of the techniques provided here. Or she might prescribe drugs to help you get to sleep.

I suggest you try all these methods first, and use drugs only as a last resort. The decision, of course, is yours.

    • Take a Warm Bath - It's a great way to relax your body. Don't overdo it, however. You merely want to relax your body, not exhaust it. Too long in hot water and your body is drained of vitality.

    • Use bath salts, or throw in Epsom salts and baking soda—one cup of each. These will relax you and also help remove toxins from your body.

    • Get a massage - Have your spouse (or whoever) give you a massage just before going to sleep. If you can convince them to give you a full body massage, great. If not, even a short backrub and/or a face and scalp massage can be a big help. Have them make the massage strokes slow, gentle, yet firm, to work the tension out of your muscles and soothe you to sleep.

    • Listen to Music or audio - Play some soft, soothing music that will lull you to sleep. There are many CDs designed for that very purpose. Some are specially composed music, others simply have sounds of waves rhythmically breaking, or the steady pattern of a heartbeat. Some will lead you to sleep with a combination of music, voice and other soothing sounds.  We found one particular system that generates endless combinations of sounds tailored to your specifications.

    • Drink a Warm Milk - A glass of warm milk 15 minutes before going to bed will soothe your nervous system. Milk contains calcium, which works directly on jagged nerves to make them (and you) relax.

    • Drink herb Tea  - If you don't like milk—or are avoiding dairy products—try a cup of hot camomile, catnip, anise or fennel tea. All contain natural ingredients which will help you sleep. Most health food stores will also have special blends of herb tea designed to soothe you and help you get to sleep.

    PLEASE TRY THIS METHODS

you need to use hypnosis if your having troubles with sleeping.  Here is one of the best, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWDe9IrXCaI&feature=channel_video_title.  He has alot of videos for other things as well.  You have to learn how to teach your mind/body/self to do what it wants for you and this can teach you better how to understand.

I use it in bed and I feel alot better and at ease after a few of his videos and am ready to have a good nights sleep after.
