so I resubscribed....

majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

So I wasn't subscribed to any MMORPG for a while. First a month of WoW to have a second look at Cataclysm, then unsunscribed. Then play some Rift betas and free weekends, and finally deciding not to buy it. Playing some Rome Gods & Heroes beta free trial, and liking the minion and estate thingy, but not beeing too hooked to subscribe. Went sooo close to resubscribing to AOC, but even before I resubscribed I was showered with cash shop offers and that made me run away screaming. Considered resubscribing to WAR but it never hooked me that much either. Then another free week of WoW... And then I thought "oh what the heck" and resubscribed to FE.

I had first unsubscribed from FE because of my utmost dislike to cash shops. But sometimes you have to face the truth, and: is there any MMORPG without any form of cash shop? Even the collectors editions are basically cash shops. So, installed the game, resubscribed. I created a new char first, and, tell you what, the moment I logged in I felt already happier than when I played any other MMORPG recently. You know... beeing able to look around, and gaze over miles and miles of landscape. Seeing small buildings in the distance and knowing that I could go there and check them out if I want to, without beeing stopped after two steps by an invisible wall of some point.

I was also impressed by the FPS, having set up about anything to maximum I still got 30 to 60 FPS on my machine which is several years old and runs clunky windows vista.

I played around with that level 1 char for a while. The help chat was scrolling at a steady speed, I saw a decent amount of players around me, and within the first few minutes also a moderator in the chat (not like those wow-mods who take days to reply with a copy&paste message). Then I switched over to my level 21 char. That was the highest level I got, so I'm somewhat of an FE newbie, despite having played it a lot. I went over to the mailbox and retrieved all kinds of respec stuff I got mailed, and drove with my transport quad to the bank and stuffed everything in there. Then I fetched some ammo from my quads trunk to have my rifle ready, and went out to do a quest.

The chat was there not as flowing as in sector 1, but still there were discussions going on every now and then, so there was life. I was a bit confused since my skills had changed, and wasn't sure either where I was exactly with that char, but whatever. At that moment I noticed some rain drops falling in the game, so I assume they finally added some kind of weather system. Or maybe it has also beein that way in the game? I don't know.

I approached the camp, and as I was used to it from other MMORPGs, started wildly firing at the nearest mob, noticing I was barely doing any damage, and when the guy finally went down I had pumped half a magazine of my rifle into him. So I tried better, and lied down into the grass. Peeked through the scope of my rifle, zoomed closer, and aimed for some headshots. And this time it went better. Then I tried out my crossbow, which was fun too.  And then I realized: I missed having to aim. Seriously: selecting a character and then hitting a few attack skills on the keyboard in the knowledge the enemy would die no matter what, that bored the crap out of me. But this? I had forgotten how much fun that was. Especially when opponents tried to duck or lie down in the grass themselves.

Just imagine trying to shoot a snake with a hunter in WoW, and then do the same in FE, where you have to aim at the beast while it's to large parts hidden in the grass.

I played some more, and as I tried to get deeper into the camp, I actually died three times... Well, I guess my equipment sucks, so I got to work on that, or maybe spend some of my ~250 spare AP on more stuff. But at least I have there an aim, which doesn't consist of "grind that dungeon 6 times". I got to look how to spend my points, check out how to improve my equipment and see what resources I  got, which I miss and where to get them.

So, it's definately not the perfect MMORPG, and surely not fun for everyone. But it's just so refreshing for me to play that after all those cookie cutter MMORPGs. Not to mention the immersion. ^^

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

I just recently resusbscribed to FE myself. I originally only left the game for financial reasons. I only wished sooner that I could go back. Fallen Earth has so many pros over every other mmo I've played in the past decade. Before vanilla SWG got destroyed by the combat upgrade it was long the best sci-fi genre mmo out there. I'd been starving for an immersive sci-fi game since then. I feel like geez, aren't you guys tiref of fantasy genre games? I mean swords, elves, fire, and brimstone gets old after a while. Wheres my spaceships? My plasma rockets? Anyways, FE not only has the sci-fi thing going for it, but its also post-apocolyptic which is also a very untapped subgenre imo. And as the OP was saying, the combat is mostly unique in its own right. It actually pays to have a vantage point in combat. Being unseen with a sniper rifle while your opponent is wandering unaware of your presence, allowing you to give the fatal headshot is actually possible, while still being able to remain unseen. Player twitch skill and judgement demands overall your survivabilty overall. The best player with the worst armor can conquer the heavily equipped noob. My only wish for this game is that the player base increases over the years. Its hopelessly underrated.

I just decided to try this game out.

Let me ask you guys a question. Every time I attack a mob, it runs towards me, then stars shooting around in random directions like a freaking pinball while it's damaging me, only to finally settle down in front of me.  It looks like normal mmo lag sat down and smoked a bunch of crack before going to work that day.

Is there some grapical setting responsible for this? Or is this just a result of being in the starter area or someshit?  My internet connection and PC are pretty beefy, so I know they arn't responsible.

The game looks interesting, but I don't know if I could handle grinding through thousands of mobs if they are all broken like this.

So when exactly is this game going free to play.  I just merged my account and noticed you still have to sub to the game.  I thought they were taking in free to play?

Im Sorry but i think the combat system is weak for this game. If i want to aim and play something like a FPS game im going to go play a counsel game. This game could destroy in the market if the combat was tweaked a little. I hear alot of people complain about the "point and click" or "tab attack" but some games did it right... like SWG pre NGE PRE CU. You had to think about your attacks to get the health down battles lasted a long time and one wrong move made you lose in the long run. The was a strategy to killing your opponent. Now the newer point and click games there is not.

Fallen earth has a great story great setting and really unique..... i really want to love this game but everytime i play it I just get aggrevated by the combat. If your more into role playing and questing or crafting its great.

IMO if this game updated their FPS engines to be more like a counsel i would love it. If they added a complicated point and click system i would love it ... but as of right now its a great game that will never take off. Hopefully Fallout online will be better

I miss FE and think it was a very underrated game when it came out.  I keep thinking of coming back to it, my main was Level 50 so there is a lot of new stuff to see along with relearning a lot of the game cause of all the changes it sounds like.

I might if SWToR gets delayed for sure.

I decided to try FE, I downloaded and it was my second day playing yesterday, made it to level 6. I like it alot so far, I love gathering stuff for crafting. It goes F2P I think the 12th of next month and my 14 day trail will end way before then so I am going to subscribe for a month or run my 14 days out and then make another toon and start all over again collecting mats and whatnot. I hear you can keep 4 toons when it goes F2P so if I have a good stash saved up I will be in good shape. I only wish I would have played this game when it came it, I find myself wanting to get home from work so I can jump right in and start playing, I havent had that gaming feeling in quite some time, this might hold me over till GW2 comes out

Is this thread really heralding FE's PvE combat system as good?  Really?

I like FE, but its patchwork craptastic FPS combat system with its absolutely awful PvE AI is not the reason for it.

Not to be nitpicky or say your beef is invalid but isn't this the vast majority of MMOs?  You got a big nasty melee weapon or gun but it takes you quite a few swings or shots to kill something?

Just saying.  Personally I liked FE's combat system but I will admit it is very clunky until you are really used to playing it.

Trust me; I am used to "clunky" combat & UI's since I was at Anarchy Online's release.

I am not saying FE is a bad game, by all means. There is just "something" which I can not put my finger upon that makes the game not for me. There are too many game breaking issues with it, like not even being able to swim, amongst more. I also find the whole setting looking to similar. Wherever I go, I feel like being in the same place. I have several times considered a return (got some great char names there), but every time I come to these forums I see someone pointing out the most obvious; emptying a full magazine in a critter before it is dead makes me turn away.

I would happily welcome a more "deadly" approach, to almost any game; it takes ages to kill something. I would rather kill more & faster, than few & slower for the same xp.

Understand, actually not being able to swim always bothered me too :P  But the setting I love in S1, being an AZ native they really nailed the look of the desert here, lol.  S2 and S3 were a bit more boring looking to me but I still liked them.

I was in AO on day one also, so soooo long ago yet I still remember it with a bit of a smile.  Last I played AO I had my Pioneers Backpack on and got a few /tells asking where I got it, heh.

For me it really varies game to game, some games like Perfect World I hated the pace and feel of the combat.  Then playing something like Global Agenda for awhile it is nice to slow things down again after a bit.

I havent subbed to any MMO for ages (had a quick trip to AOC few months ago), but now I am back in LOTRO; taking it with a "chill pill"; have been playing Mount & Blade; Warband & Football Manager 2011 lately, but was missing the "MMO life" alot.

Got me a new PC few days ago, and I maxxed everything in LOTRO and was amazed how beautiful it was; had forgotten it. Hopefully I can get past level 40 this time. Have tried that since it's release :)

But still, I am looking into this forum to check Fallen Earth's status from time to time; speed up the kill time and I would give it a X'th try!

The combat system, you like has been reworked 4 different times since launch, and still is not right.  It one of the things that made me give up on the game in the first place. Its been months since I played and I missed the last big patch to the combat system.  However used to be melee was overpowered, rifleman was a joke, so you went pistols. I always felt the combat system was clunky.

The first iteration we were all over powered with buffs that stacked, I could solo anything including boss mobs.  They fixed that with the second iteration, by making some buffs not stack, we got an injector that let us reset the points to balance out the change.  Then the third one came, another injector this time too as they introduced massive changes to melee and rifleman.  Then this last round to make changes with faction and all kinds of stuff.

I am still waiting for it to go free to play, as it is not worth a monthly sub for me.

Are some of you guys seriously complaining about the amount of bullets it takes to kill mobs? Have any of you played MMOs? Raids are basically groups of people wacking on a single mob over and over until the thing dies... Has this genre of MMOs seriously come to the point that people are complaining about something as stupid as the amount of ammo it takes to drop a mob? lol

I get the feeling that 80% of the whiners on these forums are washed up 30-40 year old men who are bored sick of MMOs but continue to post on forums to make themselves feel better. I could be wrong of course...lol
