MUDs Making a Comeback?

marks4902marks4902 Member Posts: 133

Lately i have been tired with the current trends of mmorpgs. i quietly wait for gw2 like the second coming of jesus hoping that it will fill this void in my gaming desire. Lately i have been seeing alot of advertizements in MUD games even on this mmo website. I havent played any since the 90s and was wondering if they are making some kind of micro comeback. I remember leaving and coming back a few years after (roughly 8-9 years ago) and noticing that most of the games are FURRY based or there pay to play (pay to win) or worst of all there like a mini world of warcraft. (something like an aardvark and a wolf) not trying to name names. well anyone that has any information on this subject it would be greatly appreciated i would really like to jump back into one of these especially since u can play a little on your smart phones with apps. just please dont recommend any games where im going to be cyber molested every few minutes. btw im not a  fan of RP but i would like somewhere its recommended you stay in character.

They really are making a comeback, and yeah, a lot has to do with the fact that you can easily play them on your smartphone or iPad. The one I play (OtherSpace) has recently seen the most players it's ever had in its 13 year run. But it's an rp-heavy sci-fi game, so probably not what you're looking for. If you want a list of muds and mushes to help you make a decision, go to one of the following:

    http://www.topmudsites.com

    http://mudconnect.com

    http://mudstats.com

The first two have search functions so you can find the exact kind of text-based game you're looking for.

yea, that BADMud looks pretty good because it does have at least somek ind of Graphical interface.

Im not into those MUDs where you have to use your memory to try and visualise everything around you and its purly text based.

Even if they are ascii characters, I need somekind of visual tether to those worlds.

yeah at the moment im playing around with aardwolf / achaea / BATMUD and i still dunno if ill ever be able to get hooked onto one... since the time i played one of those ive played one too many graphical mmos starting with everquest (FUNFACT: it was advertized as a graphical MUD at first not a MMORPG) and i feel like its hard to turn back.

    Kinda of agree.

Might be a good game to play at work or something, but I think id rather just read forums etc

sadly i need some kind of mental stimulation ill be getting surgery in a week and will only have the use of one arm and one foot for about 3 months so i need something to do

Im not sure a MUD would be the right solution for that situation, not for me anyway.   I'd most probably play Eve, everything can be done with mouse and it has built in voice function.

I'd even be tempted by strategy games like Civ that take a long time, maybe brush up on my chess game or Poker game.  I'm not sure an RPG would keep me distracted enough.

funny thing is i started up my old eve account yesterday to give it another chance

  • sadeyxsadeyx Member UncommonPosts: 1,555

well, you've got nothing to lose and plenty of time...  then just dive into the deepend and get yourself in a 0.0 or low-sec corporation.

I gave eve several chances over several years, each time I got bored.   It wasnt until I put myself in a good corp that Eve finally made any sense.

Just make sure its a corp that heavily uses voice coms..  the best ones make voice comm's mandatory.

Wow, 2 topics about MUDs on this forum in a couple of days... they really must be making a comeback :-)

I was reading about Primordiax yesterday, it seems to fit your request: in character recommended but not RP enforced. Has anyone played it?

A mud is a great solution to your issues. Most of the big ones have crafting and empire-building like EVE, but work a lot harder than EVE does at being newbie-friendly.

yeah i just cant decide which one i like ... aardwolf is the most popular but it seems its just a asian grinder style mud... achaea is nice bc you have to stay in character (not RP) but its pretty much pay to win later on in the game ... not to mention a solid 1/3 of the game is looking to FURRY cyber and then theres Batmud which i didnt get too far into yet so i dont really have an opinion on but i know im not a giant fan of the layout... anyone with any experience ... recent experience on the matter please chime in

its funny how many people seem to be coming back to these, do you think it has something to do with the lack of storyline or structure in current mmos or just a run of the mill nostalgia run for most?

I go back to MUDs every once in awhile, though I think it's easier for those of us who actually spent time with them in their early days than it is for people who've never played them before (the lack of graphics is a pretty tall hurdle). The main advantages MUDs have over MMOs are tighter communities due to smaller population numbers (everyone knows everyone) and developers who do what they do out of love for the game rather than financial obligation. Both of those are really refreshing palate cleansers after bad MMO experiences. Then again, MUD developers don't have anywhere near the amount of time or manpower AAA MMOs do, so change occurs at a glacially slow pace, if at all.

For my MUD recommendation, I'd say Project Bob (I know, the name's terrible) is probably the best I've played, and I've played hundreds. That's based on my own standards and expectations, though. It has things I really care about, like essentially endless levels and a really deep alternate advancement system, housing, pets, optional quests, random events, characters that are skill-based rather than class-based, and one of the most detailed loot/crafting systems I've ever seen in a MUD. It's not hugely populated, though, nor is it really a roleplaying MUD. It's mostly a progression-based game with lots of things to keep you busy.

yeah really what i would be into is a mud witha decently high player base 100+ and some kind of grouping later on in the game .. but im guessing thats asking for alot now a days

For those worried about the visual. It is true that it is harder to get immersed looking at text. However, if you get into a populated MUD, with a good community, that really sparks your interest. I kid you not it will have the best visuals of any game you have ever had. It's like reading a good book, where you see what's going on in your mind without even realizing it. It was rare, but there were a few times in MUDs where I have never felt so many emotions while playing a game. The kind of experience that you are literally shaking from adrenalin.

If you are looking to save money and try something different, I would suggest trying to find a populated MUD based on a theme that interests you. It can be extremely hard getting into it, but if you ever do it is extremely rewarding.

anyone have a popular (current) title that they can recommend? im sure theres a good amount of people watching this thread thinking the same thing as me. i wont like Aardwolf probably has the closest feeling to WoW and it has the easiest interface to use, however a game like Achaea really immerses you into it with the forced IC (Not RP) anyone else really give any of the other ones an honest try like DiscWorld BatMUD Medievia DragonRealms (even tho the pay system is insane for a text based gamed up to $50 a month) Lusternia or New World: Ateeran? Any games below that your looking at an average population of 50 or less and thats allready not enough in my opinion taking into consideration that a good deal of the existing population probably has more than one account active at a time.

I am trying out OtherSpace, it was mentioned earlier.

I never did like Aardwolf. It is 100% a grind type MUD, which always seemed silly.

I used to play Discworld, it's an awesome game, i'd definitely recommend it! It can be quite confusing at first, but there are a lot of guides out there.

Another one that I still play regularly and that I would recommend is Materia Magica, which also has a lot of players. It's more combat- and quest-oriented, and there's less RP. But a lot of fun!

Awesome, I'm glad you're trying OtherSpace, Joliust. Let me know if you need any help or have any questions.

the last thing im really looking for is a mud that i can play about 50% of the time on my phone using blowtorch or some other app. i really like an auto attack feature like in aardwolf i feel kinda silly having to press a button for every single attack
