Where is it best to spend Christmas? Should we always travel back to our childhood home to spend th

In western countries Christmas is one of the biggest travel periods of the whole year, as a big proportion of the population journeys long distances to spend the holiday with family. In 2010 it is estimated that 64 million America will travel more than 50 miles for their Christmas celebration. In particular it is common for adult children to return to their parents’ (or grandparents’) house each year, staying several nights and bringing their own children once they start families themselves. This is often regarded as an unbreakable tradition and accompanied by other time-honoured elements of the festive season, such as each family’s own take on the Christmas meal, trips to local sights/ places of worship/ family friends, as well as games, music and films. Such annual family pilgrimages are not unique to Christianity, with parallels found in many different cultures. In China hundreds of millions of people travel back to their home town or village each year to visit parents for the Chinese New Year (also known as the Spring Festival). Yet as huge multitudes of people dutifully shuttle across the planet, laden with presents and battling travel chaos, for just a brief stay “back home”, it is worth asking ourselves, is it worth it? Would we all be better off just staying put at Christmas time and celebrating where we normally live?

Deciding whose home to spend Christmas at is difficult these days. If you’re attached, either you miserably spend the holiday apart or you have to choose which set of parents to disappoint. In addition, many families are split these days, with divorce and remarriage so common. Spending Christmas with one parent will inevitably lead to accusations that you are taking sides. And do you really want to spend the holiday with your step-brothers and sisters? And trying to see both sides just means even more time on the road, rather than enjoying the holiday.

uggg. We usually fly around and go to three states during the holiday season. Of course that is in part due to having to celebrate Hindu, Jewish, AND Christian holdays. I try to get them all to come to the middle state, cause that is where me and one sister live. It has worked sometimes.

Maintaining traditions is good, giving a rhythm to life as old patterns are repeated and taught to new family members. Whether you all have to sing the same carols around the same piano, watch the same film on television, eat the same curried left-over dish on December 26th, or play the same party games, annual repetition reinforces a sense of belonging and identity. And the comfort and certainty of familiar ways allows everyone to focus on what really matters at Christmas, whether that is the story of the Christ child born in a stable, or simply the sharing of family love.
