A few words about TOR previews/reviews

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

(A) Stay calm. A preview, review or whatever is always opinion. Having an opinion is perfectly fine. There is nothing bad or wrong with it. You are entitled to yours the same as every game journalist to his. That doesn't mean he must have some evil, hidden agenda. Liking some things and disliking other is quite normal.

(B) Try not to get into mood swings every single time a new preview opinion surfaces. Such things will happen and the world will still continue to rotate. Don't over emphasize every small new opinion.

(C) Try to avoid review wars, like countering one bad/good with an opposite. It really just looks funny.

(D) Reviews, Opinions asf have surprisingly little to say. Games can sell millions of copies despite being totally mediocre or even bad, while some get great reviews and sell not at all. Example: many years ago the game "Descent".

(E) Don't assume everyone who does not share your opinion is either dumb or evil.

(F) Make an opinion yourself by experiencing a game. And even if someone else dislikes the game you like, you may still be friends. At least thats what adult, mature people should be capable of.

(G) Finally, if you like/dislike a game, TRY to give a logical explanation, not "it's a WOW clone" or "haters suck because they are all GW2 defenders". That just makes no sense. Yes I know you THINK it does, but trust me: it doesn't. ;)

Take a deep breath everyone. I am not in Beta.

Everything is going to be fine and it is going to be an awesome game.

It is really all going to be OK.

Some people will like the game and some people won't and it will be just fine.

Lots of people will be there playing and we are all going to have fun, even with the occasional frustrating bug or feature that we don't like.

It will get polished and expanded and will only get better over time like a fine wine.

Just breathe deep and it will all be over in a few short weeks.

    Embrace your inner calm.

Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! :) A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.

Says a person that theatrically renounced SWToR because of playable races.

Logic and rational thought is not allowed on the interwebs. The authorities have been notified.

Elikal - how about H - Disregard F and G if you have to breach an NDA to back up your opinion.

    Just sayin'

But ... can I assume that they are just a LITTLE bit dumb or evil? ... Like "reasonably dumb" and "moderately evil"?

I just think everyone should take good and positive reviews of any game, especially mmorpgs with a grain of salt. Each person has a different opinion and likes/dislikes different things. The whole preview/review system is greatly flawed for that one reason, and people end up like mindless drones who don't allow themselves to have their own opinion any longer.

If your intrested in game get it. If your not don't. If your semi intrested wait for a demo or trial.

I think one point should be added:

    (H) Don't over-emphasize on what the game does not have. No game can have every feature you desire. Try to look at the features and options the game gives to you, and ask yourself if they're the kind of things you'd like in a game. If think you'd like what's in the game, try to ignore what it doesn't have and just give it a try as it is.

Yea thats the other big thing. A lot of sites or blogs or whatever do reviews and they talk about what the game doesnt have or should have.

Simply put that isn't what reviews should be about.

Reviews should be about what the game has in it and how it performs.

A unfair review of SWTOR would be saying the game is bad over all a bad game because you cannot change your faction in the game through the alignment system.

While that would be cool, it isn't a part of the game so therefore the comment is utterly pointless. Stick to what it has, if what it has is garbage so be it, say its garbage. At the same time I still strongly feel people need to play these games for themselves and not base their opinions off of someone else's.

Everyone experiences different things in mmorpgs, or all games in general.

I find this part very ironic since you go into mood swings every time a new information about SWTOR surfaces.

Well, while I understand the idea, I guess people are entitled to desire a certain feature they really love. We just don't have to share the opinion. ;)

Aww my friend it just SEEMS so, since I always see the welcome and not so welcome parts of a game, and I can love the lovable and hate the hateble at the same time.

I love the story addition to MMOs as THE most needed next step.

I absolutely was driven mad with the previous exclusion of Same Gender Romance Arcs.

It is only a contradiction in your view, since I do not always talk about *everything* at the same time. ^^
