Confirmed.. Trion Worlds boss Lars Buttler reveals second mmo releasing before SWTOR.

Trion: Rift is most significant competitor WoWs ever had, excited to see SWTOR
While the title of the thread and the title of the link seem misleading, you only have to read what's in the article to find out what was said:

Im actually extremely excited about whats happening in our space. When we started five years ago, there was only WoW. Now theres Rift as an absolute serious contender, with the most dynamic gameplay ever.Then theres Star Wars, then theres End of Nations coming. Then theres Defiance coming ahead of Star Wars. So were not afraid at all. We actually look forward to it with great excitement. It makes our point.
Notice the quote marks. That was a direct quote from Butler, not something the reporter thinks. So given that, it must not be a "slip" since we already know SWTOR is releasing on Dec 22.
The only other question is Defiance considered a "mmo" by standards and Trion claims it is in the past.
So there you have it: Trion will be releasing Defiance before December 22. I expect to have an announcement on that shortly from them.

Maybe this is the reason behind talk of the new portal. Will be interesting.
How could an MMO be only 2 1/2 months away and I've never even heard of it.
I would think there would have been some beta testing or some announcements before now if Defiance is releasing before SW:ToR. Rift's advertising and feature announcements started waaay before they released the game.
I haven't even seen anything on Syfy about a new television show...which is kind of the point of the game.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I wasn't sure where to post that (forum wise) so forgive the double post, but I think it's pretty important seeing as how Trion hasn't officially said anything but yet he makes that claim.
Unless this was an lie (which I doubt or else why would he say it), it's clear he said BEFORE SWTOR.
I'm thinking this is something Trion has up it's sleeve ready to "announce" the minute SWTOR announces it's all ready to go an no more betas.
That way Trion sucks wind out of the SWTOR announcement somewhat. Such a transparent company.. just like with all their "deals" on subs.

Good question, there was a lot of talk 6 months ago about it, I guess you just have missed it.
The game have kept a rather low profile, we know that Scyfy is making a serie that will be sent alonside the MMO.
But I have to admit that I thought it was a year more until the relese of it.
Trion might be "well known" now in the MMORPG circles but I can garauntee you Star Wars: The Old Republican is MUCH more well known outside of the MMO circles...
Nothing short of Titan releasing before Dec 20th or a new WoW expansion being released before Dec 20th is going to deter from the TOR launch.
I am caught by suprise... I've not seen an advertising flurry or anything to indicate that Defiance is that close to launching. I wonder if he made a slip? What about the related TV show and all? Strange. I guess I need to visit the official site and do some research.

Bold move if Trion is going to use Defiance as a way to combat SWTOR, although it seems like an odd choice of battle. While Rift isnt a flop by any means, I dont see it as any competition to WoW. It will also be extremely weird if they launch an MMO within the next couple of months when we have heard nothing from it save for a few screenshots and a less than stellar trailer.
Kudos to Trion for being bold, but do not become one of those cocky companies that thinks just because you make games that you can compete with everyone in the market.

There are way bigger things than MMOs only a short time away and millions have never heard of them.
There won't be much to deter the TOR launch, you all know damn well that the media will make sure that the closer we get to the launch date the more ads we will see.
Sure a new MMO might be able to pull some headlines, but honestly, the mega machine of EA marketing will dwarf any efforts from trion.
Let's not forget the star wars name does hold some serious followers.
The only good thing that might happen if a MMO is launched right before TOR would be the ability for that MMO to grab those that won't be playing TOR.
Going to be interesting to say the least.
The "real" surprise is this president or whatever let the cat out of the bag before the game could announce an official release notice.
I'm sure it's just a matter of time before internet sites pick up on that and basically submarine their PR announcement.
I'm betting he didn't mean to let that out but the damage is done now.

We got a release date for SWTOR on 9/29. That article regarding Trion’s plans is from 10/6. So I can’t claim he was caught by surprise in that quote. They are being awfully quite for two months away from release… I wonder what they are planning.
That seems like a pretty major omission in the original post... They are saying that Defiance placed ahead of Star Wars in the MMORPG's MMO of E3... not that it would get release before...

There has to be a misquote somewhere, or someone has gone insane at Trion. How will you release a game with no press behind it whatsoever?!
I also agree it says MMORPG in E3 ahead of SWTOR. Meaning in placing it was ahead not that it was coming out before SWTOR.
Hmm... I'm going to reread that again. I think you guys might be right and I misread that because the PC Gamer article omitted that part.

Yep, it's just sloppy reporting on PC Gamer's part and I should have linkchecked that first.

No. The commas set off a seperate yet related thought for qualification (identity in this case.) Unless the article writer just sucks at English. The sentence still says the game is coming ahead of SWTOR and identifies it as a popular game on MMORPG.com as written. LOL.
Somebody make that writer boy take English courses at community collage. I mean we all make mistakes but he is supposed to be a pro and now we are all wondering.
However, it smells of fish to me too and I am going to have to lurk on Trion's forums for a bit now... *Sigh*
