Covering Neverwinter has always been a dicey proposition for Massively. We've always considered the upcoming D&D game by Cryptic Studios "multiplayer" rather than "massively multiplayer," yet because the game was being developed by Cryptic, the urge to cover it persisted.
Now we'll be entirely justified. An article on IGN today delivers the news that Cryptic and new publisher Perfect World Entertainment are reorienting the game's design to make it a true MMO in the style of Vindictus or Rusty Hearts:
Quote:
Neverwinter is shifting from the co-operative multiplayer game that was announced last year and into full-fledged, free-to-play MMO territory. In fact, it's shifting towards the action end of the MMO spectrum.

How free is free-to-play?
Quote:
Not all content will be free, though. The developer will be charging money for consumables, [...] vanity pets and cosmetic items. [...] Cryptic plans to avoid making any content premium-only in Neverwinter.

The restructuring of the game will push back its release date to 2012.

Not surprised this isn't a popular thread but...yeah this depressed me. I loved Neverwinter Nights, tolerated NWN2 and I was excited they were going to make a great toolset for this one. Now its gunna most likely be another craptastic MMO. What a waste. =(
Might be beacuse Cryptic is behind the wheels.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Or it could be because it was already discussed to death in the original thread, which was posted a few days ago.
Just a thought.
perfectly fine to me, i like how they will avoid making content a premium which means all questing zones are free WOOT, i am interested in seeing just what kind of interface will be used for the action part of it.
I'm looking forward to this game. Might be alot of fun and if its free, certainly worth checking out. I hope they put alot of polish on this game and that its not 4.0 but 3.5 or Pathfinder. 4.0 D&D is not that excidting, at least from what i've seen from the base rules in dragon age game. instead of having a ton of spells, you get limited to a few spells.....blah......
==========================
The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
Yeah, great IP, but not expecting much from Cryptic. Always wonder how the hell they get an IP like that with the track record they have.
First going action MMO then full blown MMO... In a nutshell they have thrown the original game concept they were selling to people since the game entered into development away for something completely diffrent. This sort of massive change never bodes well for the future product.
Another great IP trashed by Cryptic and the F2P obsession. Anyone else remember when there was always something to play in this genre?
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
When exactly was that and what is so different about now when there seem to be more mmorpg's available than ever.
Its gonna suck
"In the immediate future, we have this one, and then weve got another one that is actually going to be so were going to have, what we want to do, is in January, what were targeting to do, this may or may not happen, so you cant hold me to it. But what were targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo
Great. Another free to play travesty. Can't they just stop making these already?
Cryptic
That is all that needs to be said about the game. It will be horrible...
Edit: Seriously how do cryptic get good ips like this and star trek? They make horrible games that really only provide nice character creation. The world, quests, and new content are just vomited out and they try to call them AAA MMOs.
Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
On-Topic: Game is going to tank HARD, and hopefully Cryptic files for Bankruptsy soon given their track record. Hopefully, no other IP will ever be given to them.....EVER. Worst company I've seen in quite awhile.
I played NwN & NwN2, and I'm hugely depressed that they gave the IP to such a well known HORRIBLE "M-RPG" developer. Champions Online was NOT an MMO....sorry.

Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
In wasnt too many years ago I had three solid games I played alternately or sometimes two at a time. WOW, which Blizz shot in the head post BC. LOTRO, and ZTurbine chose to change the payment model instead of creating content and EQ2 that sold out to CS and easy mode. Yes you have tons of games to chose from now. Easy mode P2P with a CS or full blown F2P. Knida like cable tv. 150 channels and crap on everyone of them.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
I agree 100%. NWN is probably the best RPG ive played. Star Trek, well I was around when Kirk started saving the universe and what Cryptic did to STO is enough for me to never give them another dime.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
I've been a fan of the Old Neverwinter night.
I'll surely give this one a try, and hey, even if it's crap, it's free so who cares ?
Even if it's a Cryptic game, I'll still try it before judging.
It is a shame I agree. I loved NWN, use to play on social servers made by other players. I made a Hak Pak as well for one of them "Palace of Leather and Lace" (haha). AND.. NWN is where I met my now wife, so the game holds alot of memories for me.
A free mmo can't hurt anyone. So i'm looking forward to this game. I wiil be definately trying this game out.

Even if it's free the facts is Crypic have such a beloved great IP and we all know they will rape it.

Might be beacuse Perfect World Entertainment is behind the wheels.
I - as an hardcore D&D / especially Neverwinter fan will try this out, but I already know this will mostly be crap. They say this'll be action paced, such as Vindictus etc. And they say they'll go with 4.0, which is just bad. So, I know what to expect from the game and I know it will most likely not be for me, but I am still going to try it.
The part abount not being a true MMO was always known and is only good info, no dev team would take up the task of forging a real D&D MMO with a free world in this age, even though that could be pretty awesome if done right (Yes, I know D&D has and will always be about adventures and quests, but I've ran a few sandbox games and so on.)
The free to play / premium is just fine too, as long as they don't start selling Vorpal Swords in the moneyshop, only access to certain areas and perhaps even classes.
We?re all dead, just say it.
Because its a free game, if you were interested at all you should try it. What can it hurt? If you dont like it its not like you wasted money on it.

its been hinted it may have sessions like Vindictus
http://pc.ign.com/articles/119/1198498p1.html
The developer says Neverwinter will be closer to a game like Nexon's Vindictus, where combat is controlled by mouse clicks, and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully murdering hordes of monsters. Vindictus is also session-based, with each action foray designed to last about twenty minutes (Rusty Hearts, mentioned above, also follows this pattern). It's entirely possible that Neverwinter will follow this session-based structure as well, though it's worth remembering that both Vindictus and Rusty Hearts were developed for an entirely different market.
