I hope what Rift has taught every devleoper out there is that you can´t release a half-finished piece of garbage at launch and expect to fix it later... ala AOC. Rift is a quality, polished game. It is a viable alternative for those who love wow´s gameplay, but hate wow because of it´s success. I am happy for it´s success becuase I think for the next few years, it shows other developers how to properly release a game.
As long as they realize its not ok to release a world so small. Small game world + short leveling speed = magnifies end game issues. Also, people dont get attached to their characters making it easy to leave.
Only need to read about a third of the comments here, to realize this just turns into a "This guy suck's because hes not from blizzard and game A is better than Game B"
I dont make overall forum posts offten but when ill say maybe 30% of the people who post negative comments on these articles try and justify there "Facts" it just irks me. Because ive played just about every mmo that has come out and ive maxed toons in all of them ive tried. And for someone who played wow since the beginning im sorry but blizzard A:Just made wow alittle to dumbed down for my liking since the begining but i loved the game when it was hard and things like grinding the Winter saber tiger actually ment somthing. And B:Only blizz can kill there own game.
But with that said Rift is a pretty fun game, Love it or hate it, the game is pretty much the only game so far that has been able to hold a steady population of people to actually reap the benefits of things like dungeon Finders and end game things. It reminds me of Warhammer with major scale event's and just the way the character's and armor look. Im glad both games are still doing well as i, and im sure along with many others who have quit wow, still keep up to date on mmo-champion and its fun to read and see the new stuff even if im not playing.
As far as the "WoW clone" crap goes. Who cares every game is just a clone of a clone that was cloned from the clone and cloned the first clone.

At this point thats 100% true and I completely agree. It doesnt really matter if it takes things from other games, which mmo hasent? I think RiFT has enough different to make it not a "clone" the interesting thing is that games like ROM are far more of a clone but because RiFT is apparently in direct competition with the king its branded more as one.
I hope that someone from mmorpg.com calls Mr.Buttler out on his optimism in say 12 month from now -in case he hasn't pulled the Gaute card by then. And oh..."over 1mio units sold" also rings a bell..like i've heard that somewhere before.
If everyone is so "excited" at Trions, why aren't they sharing their excitement with us and release subs numbers already?
Since Rift doesnt have much complexity, I suspect its subs will continue to decline to some stable fanboy and noob base, as people get bored and move on to competitors products. These games are called themeparks for a reason, You simply cant visit every day. You go a few times, ride everything a bunch of time, and then come back when they add a new ride.

I just reactived my Rift account for the patch. It is still the same game it was before. Slow, meaningless, boreing, WoW clone with hardly anyone logged in. No thanks.

Agreed. While Rift is a decent game, it just doesn't have the pull. Maybe in a year or so, when there is a lot more content... Hell, TOR will probably sell more copies than Rift simply because it's a Star Wars game made by BioWare and people will buy it regardless.

Seriously, though, GW2 and TSW better not both bomb (I hope neither does), because I'm about done waiting on an MMO that holds my interest. Wait time is almost over, I'm about ready for the moving on to better forms of entertainment portion of my MMO phase.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Not certain how Rift will fare... I haven't played it and it launched during a period in whichI am burned out on games like it (sword and horses fantasy ). Defiance, if done right and with the right marketing, could definitely be a hit though.
I know many people who play (or used to play) Rift. All of them former WoW players. They were looking for something different to pass the time until TOR came out. Some still play, most quit even before me, but one thing is certain for me
To be honest, even if WoW finally kicks the bucket. There's project Titan - and Diablo 3. Blizzard are safe and secure regardless. And just play the game you enjoy. Simplez

TOR is slated to sell 3 million units. Now while that's not all at once, it's still pretty decent for upfront sales. Then you figure TOR's prices for things like the CE at $150 which are more than most other games charge overall. (I think you get a decent value if you like the statuette)
If they are able to retain just 25% of 3 million, that's 750k which is not good percentage wise (they are losing 1 out of every 4 people who buy the game) but it's incredible industry wise (750k would put it firmly in second place behind WoW easily).
So, figure in at least 1 out of every 4 people buying TOR probably would be a Star Wars fan and there you go. Some would unsub (can't please everyone) but some who aren't necessarily fans or who have never really given the Star Wars universe a chance would probably sub in their place.
Anyway you slice it, it shouldn't be hard for Bioware to retain just 25% based on their excellent industry reputation for Star Wars products.
I think GW2 will be good as well from what I've seen of the game. Even so, there are still another 10 mmos coming out as AAA mmos and probably half of those are going to be FTP Hybrid models right off the bat.

The game could have LITERALLY been WoW2..it's almost the EXACT same..even the classes are so close you feel like you're playing a new WoW.
Change the "rifts" to invasions from the Burning Legion....even the two factions are basically Horde (minus orcs..but one of the classes could EASILY be re-skinned to being orcs without a model change) and Alliance..minus several races..but still the same.
rename the world Azeroth...and change the city names..and World of WarCraft 2 is born....
yes that requires changing things..but do you notice it's all text and maybe a texture or two? because the gameplay mechanics and the rest of the setting would fit almost exactly.

The Rift lore pretends this isn't reality, suggesting no one is 'bad' and if anyone is it's the Guardians for starting it all, but it's obvious to any gamer who is who if they've played enough mmos. Simply writing in that it's actually the 'other way' doesn't make it so.
It's actually almost a direct ripoff lorewise from AION, where the "white" people or angelic side are actually the 'bad' people and the "ethnic" or evil looking people were actually the "good side".

No, Rift is more of a WoW clone than ROM is. ROM at least has a different class building system than Rift and WoW. Rift 100% took WoWs class sytem and tweaked it to letting you pick the three talent trees, and added the root abilities.
Rift copied or slightly changed from WoW:

Leveling system (assign talent point to one of three trees)
Crafting system
Dailies
Faction Grinds
Repeated running of recycled instances for emblems to buy gear as your end game 'content'
Battlegrounds/Warfront
Honor/Favor
All these systems are obviously direct copies form WoW doctored up a little. This is the foundation of the game. Its WoW. Yes, they added the rift/public quests and eq2 style collections, and lately are trying to break out of WoW mode with the AA system, but this is *the* closest thing to a direct WoW clone besides maybe Allods, but I never played that game more than 5 minutes.
