One of my most favorite things to do in a sandbox world is build my own home, or have some sort of property out off in the middle of nowhere by myself. Unfortunately I have not found any games to my liking. There are some that get very close, like Wurm. Or Haven and Hearth. My problem with these games are the combat in my opinion are not very fun at all. I love to go out hunting for animals and then skinning them and whatnot. It has always been something I was interested in doing in a game.
I am just wondering if there are any mmos out there or even singleplayer games that can really sate my hunger for this sort of game. I don't want to hear about darkfall or any of the other sandbox games like that. I never did get to play Uo really because of my age. I have always been interested though. So is there something? Anything with a HEAVY focus on farming/hunting/building/crafting. Of course combat is always a plus.
I am watching Archeage, but im an impatient bastard and I want something now

What about Roblox?

Preferably something with some depth and persistence, I love minecraft. I just want something like Wurm yet less.. Horrible.
Yeah im with you OP.... I love building my own house. But no one has really done anything good with housing since ultima. Games have done housing since then but most of them fail at it... bad.
In anycase the only game i know of coming up that allows you to build your own home is archage.
However the building aspect seems rather limited but from what I can tell you can build you house just about wherever you want.
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
Unfortunately Mortal Online is about as bad as you can get. I'd say Archage is really the only one coming within the next few years. There is another one called Darkness and Light, also by the name of Savage Horizons I believe? Again, fairly distant future for both of those titles.
Perhaps some singleplayer ones? I don't mind playing alone, though I would prefer it in a setting like Wurm. My problem with games like Wurm and other similar titles is I don't usually make very many friends. Being alone is rather lonely, but in a building game I just prefer to do my own thing. I do like having neighbors though that are friendly
And I actually enjoyed Mortal Online in the beta regardless of the bugs, I never did get around to buying it and im glad I didn't. I hear it hasn't got any better.
Hey i found the Heaven&hearth combat system quiet funny; in fact better than many mmo, the only problem is the fact you have a lineare progression so if your skill are far better then the animal you kill them too easily. Did you try to melee those animals, and not just bug them from your boat?
I don't know any good house building feature in mmos apart from the game you mention, sorry. H&H is the best there, no wonder.
There are still bugs that persist today from way back in alpha. That's really all that needs to be said.
I was always to scared to even try to fight in Haven and Hearth, and I have no idea how it is done. So I usually steer clear of combat.. The game itself is charming besides all the douchebags who play it. I like the art style, and I love making my own things in the middle of nowhere. I just know if some asshole happens along though, they could crush everything I have done in a matter of minutes.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. You can build (and own) houses and ships. Not to mention, the game looks beautiful, and gameplay is more than the standard 'kill 10 rats' because of the 3 spheres of leveling (char XP, diplomacy & crafting).
I tried Vanguard, I liked it but I would really like to try it a bit more and I believe in the trial you cannot leave the trial island. I want to see what all the rest of the world is like first. Not possible unfortunately.
True, you can't leave the starter isle on a trial account. But why not buy the 'box' from eBay or steam for a couple of $ (I bought mine from Steam for €3 last year). This will give you the option to venture past the starter isle for very little...
That's why learning to fight with a sword is important, most of the douche don't have a clue how to fight, and if you train up to kill a bear, you'll probably kill 95% of the douche bags easily, because the system need some brain to be used correctly, and those guys usually only play on the surprise and only know to punch. The system is really interesting to learn, just have enough skill and try next to your boat at the beginning so you can escape if it turn bad, and follow the guides on the forum. It really deserve a try. Talking about it make me want to come back. This game is an awesome sandbox, the only game that gave me back the UO feeling, and even enhanced it. And if you die, well that's really not a big deal really, you come back pretty fact in fact.
I might just do that, how in depth is making our own place? Can we choose anywhere?
I might try.. To many horrible situations with boars and bears might have scarred me for life heh. I find myself against a wall though, now that I have set up everything I can do, I am just getting on to harvest my farm every now and then.
Yes you can do it anywhere, if that land isn't possessed by someone else, but the map is huge really, finding a good spot is part of the fun. I personally went to the map border and wandered around to find chilly maps without aggressive communities, and this was a real quest alone, finding the right spot with good quality clay, metals, water... You can even take a cave if you want to mine and build inside. You really can build villages, with fortifications, you can build everything you need to craft like ovens or smelting stuff, they are few houses type... You have to grow your seeds for food. And everything you craft have a quality value. You can even grow tree to have better quality wood. I had my little forest around me when i was playing. You really have it all to build a simple house up to a village, and the deepness is huge because of the quality value on items. Learning to fight is kind of achievement because you'll have or to craft your sword or buy from others. I personally went the craft route, and had my mine and trees to get the best sword i could make.
Once you get around all this you should find a good community though, i made the mistake to stay an hermit too long, and it got boring, and need to much dedication to maintain my little domain, since i was the cook, miner, crafter, hunter... just to much.
UNfortunately, you can't pick your spot at random. From what I've seen, there are pre-located player villages. Can't tell too much about the how & what of the in-depth crafting system either (yet). I've only rerolled last week and my other 2 chars never came past 15 (didn't like those 2 classes too much). I do know that a lot of crafting (also from different schoold) is required to make yourself a house / boat.
besides 'vanguard' 'istaria: chronicles of the gifted' had the best house building i've seen so far. in this game you can buy a plot of land. once you own a plot of land (or a lair - if you play a dragon) you can build (or have built - it needs time, resources and specialized crafters) many different types of structures on that property such as houses, shops, fountains, factories, etc. You can place them anywhere on the plot you want within the confines of the borders. these structures provide benefits from storage of items and resources to machines that are used in tradeskills to player-run merchants. player-built machines often provide bonuses to crafting skills when they are used. istaria is a sandbox-mmorpg, a very old one to be honest, released in 2003 with a 'freemium' subscription model, but the developers are still active, last major update was 2 months ago.
If you talk about H&H then its not true. You place a kind of totem to possess your land you then buy with skill point to extend it. You can place it anywhere, but in other people land. And you can even do it on other village land if they give you the permission. There is no pre located village, i don't know where you got this from, go ask in their forum they will tell you.
Was talking about Vanguard here ;-)
Hes talking about Vanguard. Resterz didn't really specifiy who he was talking to so the H&H and VG people both responded.
Yep it was my fault, heh. Sorry, I understood who was talking to me and what about. So, nothing else out there huh?
There is a HUGE population that want what you want OP,yet somehow developers don't want to give it to us.So you ask why?
Simple, they are making our games for profit,do not beleive one word out of their mouth about creating a "game for us".
You are not going to find one good game, yet and i have no idea how in depth Archeage will be,i somehow feel it will be cheap.NONE of the asian games even use movers or doors on their buildings,so i assume if AA follows suit,it will be a house in the world, but you instance into it.I guess it is all we can expect since poly counts do matter,no way you can have 100 houses in a viewable area with 5,0000 house items loading into the game.
Unfortunately we just don't have the capacity to make a real good game yet,so we get bits and pieces from game to game.I will probably be too old to witness the first wave of real good mmorpg's.We will need a higher quality internet and much faster PC's with alot more bandwidth.
It does bring back a memory however of a video by Epic games, showing with tricks you can create super high poly count maps and still have it playable for players. So i guess we jsut have a bunch of incompetent developers out there or they just don't want to put any effort into their games.Actually there is a lot of MAYA you tube videos showing how to lower poly counts,so yes we can have better gsaming with housing and lots of items,it is easier fro devs to give us the crap they are currently feeding us.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Darkfall has housing, but you dont really build them. As I understand you find or buy a deed, then get lucky and find an abandoned house and take it over and boom, you have a house. No where near as awesome as some other games mentioned.
