They've also announced the PS3 version is coming too, wonder if it will be like when other country versions of games start out and will need to go through the exact same update/patch processes as the earilier version did.
I hope for their sake it does not, and they do all that before lauching it. I'm not even sure if it's worth buying for my PS3 in the PC's current state, so to do the same to the PS3 version as they did PC (release unfinished, and slowly add updates, etc) would not be encouragement to buy it.
New players likely won't join until 2.0. SE already knows this but they also know they need money to make this vision possible. So the second question is, will the current player base pay the monthly sub? You said i'm in the minority... but based on an informal poll on the official website.... as of now....
Yes I will pay - 69% (269)
No I won't pay - 31% (120)
... Wait Wait Wait ...
So what you're saying is... of the POPULATION that goes to the official website (which at this point is mostly people who REMOTELY care about the game)... 31% aren't willing to cough up money. So you're going to lose (just on this poll) 1/3 of your current players/people who care about the game.
It's not that they shouldn't charge for MMORPGs. It's true that 14 months of free was nice. But it WASN'T just nice. It was NECESSARY specifically because the entire game would have been F2P and left to dwindle had they tried charging for the garbage.
Whether it's worth it or not at this point is a moot point. Unless they drum up significant notice, no one will give a rats and the game will pass. I think it's messed up when games like Super Hero Squad Online has a bigger player base than FFXIV (I don't know if this is true or not but the implication that it COULD be true should be scary enough for Final Fantasy fans).

What makes more financial sense? 50k players paying $0 or 10k players paying $13 a month?
I loved FFXIV, combat system was good when they implimented auto attack which was honestly so badly needed it made it great, sure its not super fast but it was more or less me watching how nice the animations were for spells and other stuff.
I just am waiting to see the databases update with the new recipes so i can figure out whether or not i really wish to come back because spending a week worth of my time to create one piece of armor was just boring and it sucked now with 1.19 all those recipes got rehauled and crafting is now viable WHILE leveling your class, this way you can self manage one thing for yourself then later on you can branch out and master the really good stuff.
to me thats how crafting should always have been for those who love leveling and fighting should be able to create the basic armor for their levels with ease to be able to manage themselvees easier but if you wish to do any group orientated stuff then yes you should have to concentrate on other crafting aspects and the market as well.
Those who aren't even playing the game as it stands, and won't now that the announcement for 2.0 has been made? (basically most people out there)
Why should anyone give a damn about people like them? The sub fee isn't targeted for them. Their opinion is as relevant as Sambia's tourism statistics of 2010 when calculating the annual budget of the US.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I think you need to retake elementary logic there buddy.
We get it you A.) have no money to pay for an MMO, or B.) simply hate P2P MMO's in general (or FFXIV in particular).
There is a third option. He simply doesn't feel that the game is worth spending money on.
Also AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I"m so scared by your implication that something could be true which obviously isn't because FFXIV has 18 Servers, none of which are completely empty, a third of which are heavy pop so it is actually doing better than most p2p MMO's even including:
Vanguard
EQ2
EQ1
FFXI
Fallen Earth
Lineage II, Lineage
Warhammer
DAoC
DC Universe
Champion's Online
and obviously better than:
Hero Online
Ultima Online
Mortal Online
Darkfall
Aika Online
Planetside
Free Realms
Ragnorak Online
Jade Dynasty
Star Trek Online
SWG
etc. etc. etc.
(based on server #, population, and Xfire #'s, if you have any other criteria you know of which gives an estimation of population numbers I'd be glad to use it to compare too. However by every measure out there FFXIV is more populated/sucessful than EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THESE MMO's)
Care to give us some numbers or sources? Is this just a gut feeling? It's also not a very valid comparison because some of those games are over a decade old. Try comparing FFXIV to a game that was released in the last few years and it may be a more valid comparison.
Sure some of those games have gone "freemium" but blame the shady companies that run them for giving into their greed, not the communities since some others have survived on P2P alone.
So it's greedy to try and save your product and improve it's profitability? That's just good business.
Even if 30% of these cheap people from the forums (the poll which few peole I know even voted for *and everyone I know is paying so add another ~200+ people from Selbina* is now at 593 70%-255 30%) actually left the game (most likely half of those 30% are bluffing) then when subs start after 1.2, it would still be one of the most populated MMO's on the market.
Some of us aren't poor college kids or jobless. I make enough money that 15 dollas a month wouldn't even factor into my decision to play a game, but the quality of that game would. How exactly do you know what the population of FFXIV is? You have no eartlhly idea. I guess looking around Ul'dah and seeing new people indicates that the game has a healthy population. Talk about needing to go back to school for elementary logic.

Vanguard has 1 server (which is lower pop than most servers in XIV)
FFXI has 16 servers (but most are much lower pop than XIV)
EQ1 has 14 servers (but most all are much lower pop than XIV especially since this # includes specialty servers)
EQ2 has 9 Servers most of which have lower pop than XIV
Lineage II has 2 servers? (can't be higher pop than heaviest populated XIV servers)
Over a decade old? Really? Can you not do math? Other than Ultima and EQ none of these games launched over 10 years ago, most launched within the last few years. It is an extremely valid comparison because these games are mostly P2P, and because the person I was responding to tried to make the absurd claim that FFXIV had no population to speak of and was less followed than Super something online which I have never even heard of (and isn't listed on any MMO site I could find).
Now would you care to give me some numbers to support the argument that FFXIV is failing in comparison with the majority of P2P or even F2P mmo's on the market? Or do you have nothing to go on but hate?
Sure some of those games have gone "freemium" but blame the shady companies that run them for giving into their greed, not the communities since some others have survived on P2P alone.
So it's greedy to try and save your product and improve it's profitability? That's just good business.
It's greedy to screw over your existing subscribers to make a buck instead of improving your product as Square Enix is doing to try and get more subscribers. I hear that stealing candy from babies is good business too though so I guess you have a point.... if I was investing in an MMO and not playing it maybe. I don't care about profitability, I care only about enjoyability and community (both of which F2P destroys).

Yes absolutely my experience on Selbina, the number of unique active forum accounts I have seen posting within the last 2 months, the # of endgame shells in the game or non overlapping linkshells in general. The number of people on my friends list, and the number of people I play with not on my friends list.Yes all of this is anecdotal, but it is better than your "baseless speculation".
How about the fact that I have been in a queue after 1.19, and 1.18 both. The number of servers. The fact that it specifically says a server has a high population (the population gauge when creating a new character), but I guess those are all the result of Square Enix lying and going to great lengths to manipulate such gauges to cover for themselves right? I bet 90% of players are bots run by Yoshida to try and make it look like this game has people playing, probably most of my linkshell!!!! AHHHHHHH YOU HAVE LIFTED THE VEIL FROM MY EYES YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!
Seriously though, You know better I'm sure. You have ALL THIS EVIDENCE to support the claim that the game has no population and is failing. Let's see some of it. Oh you don't have any whatsoever? Then maybe you should be quiet.
Ignoring the personal attack you make, why is it that my opinion means I hate P2P games? In FACT, if you go back and read through my posts, I'm HIGHLY anti-F2P due to most of the Asian garbage out there.
What I AM sayin is that everyone keeps pointing to the next patch for this game. Oh, 1.15 will fix it. Then 1.16. Now that 1.18-1.19 have been implemented the almighty 2.0 will fix it ("sometime late in 2012"). Before that shoe drops though, they are going to start charging money. For a game they OBVIOUSLY felt was incomplete.
So... for those who are slow and resort to personal attacks I'll simplify... a KIDS game from my post was launched MORE successfully than a AAA+ from Square Enix EVEN after a year. Said AAA+ game is now going to charge and the discussion is whether or not it's ready and quite honestly it's not. I have a RIGHT to say this in a forum post without having to worry about being trolled/flamed/harassed.
I could have posted "OMG this game suxxor, losers gunna pay $$$ fer money" and you would have STILL had to deal with my opinion as it doesn't violate the terms of this site but my points are VERY much valid and obviously hit a sore spot.
And if you don't think you're paying now for an IOU from S.E. even S.E. acknowledges it by saying "Following the results of the development and operations teams’ efforts, together with the release of the overall plans for the game’s future". Please boys and girls, give us money and we promise to give you updates. I SWEAR they are taking their queues from SOE with their DCUO "monthly content updates" promises.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I expected something more like a GW style buy to play conversion as a way to salvage the investment and save reputation. If subscription goes live and playerbase severely drops, I wonder what options they have left.
Doing what they should have done a year ago. Throw the towel in the ring, accept defeat for your cluster feck up and shut down this abomination.
We were flamed left and right by the hardcore fans, that each and every patch would be THE patch that would turn this game around. And that we had no right to complain, because there was no sub fee and that they would not start charging until this game was FINISHED (aka PS3 release)!
Well that excuse is FINALLY coming to an end next month! Wonder with what kind of an excuse they gonna come up after?
Especially when the servers will all turn into ghost towns.

blah blah blah blah blah (you trying to divert attention from your lack of a valid point)
No it wasn't, no it didn't, FFXIV is more sucessful than most currently operating MMO's for both Kids and Adults, free to play and Pay to play.
You sir, are wrong. Glad you aren't playing, glad we are being asked to pay to play, and I'm happy with the current state of the game and think 1.2 will IMPROVE on that just like 1.18 and 1.19 did.
Here's how I deal with your "opinion", I laugh at it.
Murugan, it's you who has resorted to personal attacking people.
Personal attacks is a sign of weakness. Is a sign you have no counter arguments to the discussion.
So it's rather you trying to divert attention from your lack of bringing up any valid points.
And since the sudden announcement of reinstating of subscription fees, before the game is even remotely ready to start charging again, you actually just lost the only counter argumentation you ever had.
People willing to sub (in this poll) is LESS than 35%.
People NOT willing to sub is 43%.
And now you laughably add looking at the X-Fire numbers which is NEVER accurate. Tell me, if this game is doing so well, why did the Dev's remove the ability to see the number of players online at a given time? Huh? Cause I can tell you the launch numbers were UNDER 40K. The most recent polls show UNDER 17K.
Moving right along...
@Jero thanks for that but rabid fans are rabid fans. You'll get your hand bit. I just hope others come on here and take the warning that the game sucks now, it'll suck a year from now. A promise of a decent launch was lied about. The PS3 on hold. Now it's not looking until BETA in LATE 2012. Game is DOA.

If calling people liars (when they themselves admit that they are making something up like Ikeda did) and pointing out that they have absolutely no proof of their absurd claims is a personal attack then they can ban me (they have in the past).
You are still trying to divert attention by personally attacking me by calling me a troll (which is against the forum rules: retalliation).
I offered my counter arguments, look at xfire. You are wrong. Look at # of servers and population of servers (which you can see at character creation) you are wrong. Look at the polls on the forum, you are wrong. Log in and come to Selbina and tell me it empty, you are wrong.
You are wrong. If that is a personal attack so be it, because you are wrong constantly. You have nothing to bring to the table, you have no proof. You have only your hate of the game, and if I'm going to get banned for "personally attacking you" I'll call it what it is. You have nothing but trolling.
I log into the game frequently and specifically onto Besaid (one of the higher populated servers) and don't encounter nor see anything near the "BOLD" claims you are making in this topic!
After 1.18 there was a brief spike in population..... just to dwindle back down to pre 1.18 numbers soon after the shiny wore off.
With 1.19 it's dwindling down even faster than the 1.18 patch, because it added even less than the 1.18 patch.
Sorry, but Chocobos and Airships isn't gonna keep people sticking around.
And now the sudden announcement of the reinstating of subscription fees next month is gonna backfire to SE like there is no tomorrow!
Also how's the Aion 3.0 doing? What? It hasn't arrived yet, oh well......
I was gonna make a comment about this also but you beat me to it. Aion is sorta doing the same thing. Showing changes that will come one day, a few years from now.
FFXIV is doing the same. These changes are amazing and will probably salvage the game. The catch? You have to pay a incomplete game for a few months to a possible year til you get these changes. The arrogance of SE is truly amazing. They should have delayed the launch after everyone in beta said how bad it was, but no, they push forward and release a half ass game. Then it gets bad reviews, tanks hard, then they said it damaged the name. Of course it did, you released a incomplete game. What did they expect? I will admit the free gametime for these last few months has been a nice gesture, but wanting to charge in this state is still stupid. They will shoot themselves in the foot again by doing this and hoping enough stay around.
I can't tell if I want this to succed or fail. I have so much respect for FFXI and I had hoped FFXIV could bring that back and it didn't. Do they deserve all these chances at redemption, or should we let this title die cause of a rushed development cycle and poor game direction? I don't know at this point. I just don't think things will turn out the way they want to by going this route.

It's the kind of Arrogance that will end up being the final nail in the coffin.
They just recentely held another press release "AGAIN" apologising for the current state of the game that it was nowhere near Final Fantasy franchise worthy and that they were about 50% towards making the game FF worthy (aka finished!).
And now... not even two weeks later they have the guts to suddenly reinstate monthly subscription fees coming next month?
The FF worthy aka finished state of this game, which will be 2.0 (according to their own roadmap) and see the release of the PS3 version is more than a year away still! (not taking into account possible delays, which seeing SE's track record with patches, is bound to happen)!
So in essence, they now going to charge us and letting us pay for the remaining 50% of beta !! Hilarious! Just hilarious!
Ignoring the personal attack you make, why is it that my opinion means I hate P2P games? In FACT, if you go back and read through my posts, I'm HIGHLY anti-F2P due to most of the Asian garbage out there.

Right, I'm sure you have. (won't even respond to the laughable point about 1.19 having less content than 1.18 that is just so incredibely wrong... and unbelievable that you would even attempt to claim that). I'm online right now, population on Selbina is anything but dwindling.
Anyways I'm done with you. Enjoy your personal MMO messiah which appears to be The Secret World. It looks awesome - sarcasm. You will not be missed on this side. If you do "regularly log in" which you are probably lying about since you obviously know nothing about 1.19.
Oh you mean I forgot to mention the Ifrit encounter? If it's gonna last just as long as the two Grand company dungeons of patch 1.18.
Tell me... how is this gonna help bringing in new players? Yet alone enticing people to sub to this game coming next month? When one of the worst mechanics of all (Guild Leves) still exists in this game and hasn't been replaced by something actually FUN! Not to mention the boring, repetitive layout of most of the zones! Not to mention a lot of basic and essential features still missing in this game. Not to mention the still horrible chore of an UI !
I am sure when the game eventually reach the point of releasing patch 2.0, which won't be till end 2012 !! the game will finally have addressed the points I mentioned above and reached a state of release worthiness!
But until then... I really cannot see many people subscribing to this game coming next month! Especially since, in essence they have now broken their promise! for NOT reinstating the monthly subscription fees until they felt the game was ready and worthy to start charging! Something they themselves have often linked to the moment of PS3 release!
Even worse, like I mentioned in my post directly above, SE helt a press conference not even two weeks ago in Japan, again apologising for the current state of FFXIV ! Not even two weeks ago!!
Tell me? How does that rime with this now sudden announcement of reinstating sub fees coming next month??

I SWEAR they are taking their queues from SOE with their DCUO "monthly content updates" promises.
blah blah blah blah blah (you trying to divert attention from your lack of a valid point)
I try to listen to you and all I hear is Beaker from the muppets.
Ifrit, 3 beastman strongholds, chocobo escort quests, entire lines of quests from Grand Company (which includes low-mid level rewards), a r15 Dungeon, saved ability palletes between classes, changes to targetting, changes to many things people complained about, more scalability already due to 30 FPS limiter option on mid level machines, improved group leveling more than replaced guildleves as the progression of choice.
I get it you don't like it, but you don't know the first thing about new players and what they are looking for. Every one of them that I talk to loves 1.19. I love how you trolls keep harping back onto their "apology" like it is direct confirmation of all your trolling.
The game will be worthy to start charging after 1.2 (by their standards which is all they ever promised) if you don't think so then you are welcome not to pay for it. Lol who the hell cares. I rest my case.
Enjoy The Secret World I'm sure it will be a smash hit, after all that is what Funcom is known for.... Enjoy your pay to win cash shop too!
Judging by the response of the XIV community (one's that actually play the game than those acting like they know the situation without having the game on there HDD) have voted in an official forum thread.
So far, a little over 2/3's of the playerbase is staying.
The way I see it is those that are staying will get to experience the storyline arch leading to 2.0, level there classes (which are staying even after 2.0, so it won't be for waste), experience the usual patches that have been changing a lot of the mechanics, while supporting the development of 2.0 in the process.
SE doesn't care on who leaves when they start billing, because it will only get rid of those playing for free that had no intention to support the game at the moment. No doubt a new influx of players will come with the 2.0 PC Client/PS3 release.
Consumer should be smarter and pay for a quality product and not for future product.
If the company do not have fund to make a quality product then it's their problem and it imply that the company fail as a game developer.
Mortal online tried to cash in with promises....fail
Aion tried with it's 3.0 vision(currently 2.7).....fail
Eve online tried to make good with future promise after the monodebacle......fail
Enron try to use projected profit and future earning to cover it's rotting core...fail
Lend me 10 grand and i'll pay you double in a week....fail
Asking for help after you treated that guy like an azz....fail
Junkie asking for financial aid and promise to quit....fail
Prove your game is worthy before asking people to buy/subscrib to it. Still some fanatic are willing to martry themselves in the name of blah blah blah....
Square open a restaurant, the food is terrible. Seeing the customer probably will move on to other restaurant and never look back, the owner fire the old cook and hire a new 1. The owner then handed out complimentary coupon to it's customer and apologize to them, he told them to give this restaurant another chance and promise they'll work hard to improve it. Many customer don't feel like continuing to be their product improvement lab rat and move on but a few were touch by the owner and go along with it. While the food improve somewhat over time but it's still consider bad by the public. Seeing that simply giving free meal is not the way to go. The owner stop the coupon promotion and start charging their customer, he advertise on the press that this restaurant will improve a lot in the future and tell the public why it will improve. He ask them to come support his business blah blah blah.....
Normally in RL for this restaurant case people will just ignore the owner and unless he get good review by critic people won't even consider it again. I know this may not be a good analogy due to gamers nowadays then to get less and less rational/logical and more and more zealous.
If a game is good for you but bad for the rest of the world then
good for you + bad for the dev = still bad
Niche market is not an excuse. Eve online, guild wars, mortal online are all niche mmo compare to main stream themepark type, Ever wonder why eve and gw is somewhat sucessful compare to mortal online?
I will be supporting the company with my monthly fee.
They are making a serious effort to restore the Final Fantasy name, and to provide customers with a game worthy of that name and the reputation it carries, you really can't ask for more than that. They made a mistake and they have been completely honest about that fact, and there plans to make good on that mistake, which is more than can be said for most companies that have released mmorpgs over the last half a decade.
I can't wait for the revamped game, and I look forward to participating in the current version until that time comes.
Comments
You Never Do the following:
-Mess with a Man's Woman
-Mess with a Man's Family
-Mess with a Man's Money...
SE messed with MMO player's money by putting out a half product, they tried to curb this by not charging a subscription.
So they didn't mess with people's money... until now....
They've also announced the PS3 version is coming too, wonder if it will be like when other country versions of games start out and will need to go through the exact same update/patch processes as the earilier version did.
I hope for their sake it does not, and they do all that before lauching it. I'm not even sure if it's worth buying for my PS3 in the PC's current state, so to do the same to the PS3 version as they did PC (release unfinished, and slowly add updates, etc) would not be encouragement to buy it.
Currently playing and enjoying the game.
I will gladly pay for my sub, no big deal.
What makes more financial sense? 50k players paying $0 or 10k players paying $13 a month?
If 2.0 is spectacular, people will come back.
If they can get the new UI out by then I would say maybe. But, from my understanding that's not comming until 2.0 which will be in april...
Again- too soon for whom?
Those who aren't even playing the game as it stands, and won't now that the announcement for 2.0 has been made? (basically most people out there)
Why should anyone give a damn about people like them? The sub fee isn't targeted for them. Their opinion is as relevant as Sambia's tourism statistics of 2010 when calculating the annual budget of the US.

Murugan, it's you who has resorted to personal attacking people.

one word: Yup.....
And if you could back up your numbers... because SE hasn't released any.
http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/32105-will-you-be-paying-in-november/
I log into the game frequently and specifically onto Besaid (one of the higher populated servers) and don't encounter nor see anything near the "BOLD" claims you are making in this topic!

Oh you mean I forgot to mention the Ifrit encounter? If it's gonna last just as long as the two Grand company dungeons of patch 1.18.
