Should I?

ScaredTurtleScaredTurtle Member UncommonPosts: 41

Should I buy Rift?  I played the trial and I loved it. I loved the class mechanics and the enviorment. I know it's called a wow clone but I never really played WoW, So I can't call it a clone or compare  it. (which I think is a good thing)  But the thing that bothers me is that a lot of people say they get bored fast of it. And I don't want to invest money/time in somehting I will enjoy in the long run

So please give me some input

I bought and played it for only a month at launch and I feel like I got my monies worth. From a cost/time/fun ratio, it did it's job for me. :)

    /2cents

(Note: I left because I don't care much for raiding and my guild bailed on the game as well.)

If you never played WoW you may not get bored of it as fast as others.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

Well I never played WoW and start Rift. I liked it for about half a month, quit and come back 2 months ago and sub for 3 months when they have a discount sub price.

Right now I'm a bit at a loss if I should continue playing, just sayin. If you have a guild the game could be good.

The problem with the game is that, it tries to do so many things that WoW has done, in so little time, the game just doesn't have a focus to it. So people mostly end up random roaming somewhere doing a random rift or raiding. Zone events are fun, open world raids are formed to repel the invasions, but don't expect much challenge from the game if you are expecting difficult outside the usual MMO gear grind.

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

If you missed out on Wow then yes, definately Rift will be an amazing experience for you.

You can get it free with 30 days if you're from the UK this weekend at green man gaming site http://www.greenmangaming.co.uk/games/mmos/sun-promotion-rift/ No point in buying it when you don't have to.

    Pro:

    - nice graphics (not jaw dropping)

    - many ways to customize your class

    Cons:

    - no replayability

    - quests are boring

    - people don't communicate

    - nothing new

    - nearly no exploration

    - mobs everywhere, you can't take two steps without beeing attacked

If you liked the trial: why not? It's not like the game costs much. I bought the game when it was pretty cheap, like 7€. I unsubbed when my highest char was 32 or 33. It's not a bad game, if you plan to level only very few chars and don't expect huge storylines and stuff.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Nothing new? When are we going to stop saying this exactly? WoW entire next expansion is copying all that stuff you guys keep saying is not new.

Look at just how many things ar up there are based on opinion and not fact. The game is very good and for the price and content you get there is a crap ton to do.

Short of removing raids from the game some people will never be happy. No matter what Trion does or adds if there are still raids people will continue to post that the game is about only raiding which is beyond bull.

The funny part is Trion is doing what everyone wishes Blizzard would do. They are taking our sub money and box sales money and putting every dime back into the game. Each patch with 1.6 just keeps adding more and more content.  I am very please with what I am getting.

Good idea. The game really does have a lot of content and they are adding more. If you have any questions just ask.

i just came back to rift for 1 more month.... moved my 2 toons (1 defiant and 1 guardian) both to sunrest shard (because it was one of the very few that says HIGH population.... and i feel so alone i think that month subscription is being just wasted.... its really boring to level up when nobody is  around doing the same things as you do.... so i just stopped again...

ill keep looking for something to hook me up untill swtor comes out.... then ill play swtor untill GW2 and WoW:Mist of pandaria comes out...

Yeah, if I had never played WoW, I'd like Rift a lot more than I currently do.

The games are so similar that it's just hard to justify playing Rift over WoW when the other game simply has so much more content combined with the fact that I have so many personal memories of the game.  Additionally, it seems like Rift's game world was just thrown together with all the common fantasy MMORPG landscape cliches whereas Azeroth feels far mroe like a cohesive, original gameworld.

Rift actually does offer a lot more then WoW when it comes to end game. Either it be 10mans that are not simply recycled 20mans. Open world content that WoW is blatantly copying in Mist of Panderia because they stated the game world is dead and all you do is stand in Org or Stormwind and never leave. It truely has become World of Queuecraft.

I do not believe this statement is true at all anymore that WoW offers more then Rift. If I do not like a server on Rift or I find out my friend is on another server I simply transfer for free. Trion has come out and said they do not understand why mmo companies charge this fee anymore in 2011.

How about the biggest part that noone can explain? Blizzard which publishes their reports on how much they make said they do not have the resources to make content faster at Blizzcon? Why does a company with 1/10th their game size give me new fresh content every month? Maybe we could say they had a lot planned before the game released, but what is the excuse 7 months later when every single month I get new content?

I feel that Rift has gotten to the point where it has passed WoW and that is why WoW is taking so many good ideas from Rift and putting it into Mist of Panderia because even Blizzard realizes that Trion has solved a lot of the problems with their game.

Go for it, they are adding a new end game area soon which looks fairly involved. The community whilst somewhat quiet, is far more mature than any of the wow servers. Populations are fairly healthy.

It may well last you 3-6 months if you don't hammer the content too fast.

It wasn't for me, at least not as launched, but from the sounds of the OP's playing experience it would be a good title for themto get into.

Truer words have not been spoken. Before I left WoW aprox six months ago, this was my biggest complaint. No random events no sense of urgency in the world and it was SUPPOSED to be yet another world ending even supposedly in CATA. All of which Rift does have. And now we see that GW2 is going to be doing random event handling and minor bosses and tagless mob handling. I bet WoW does this next too copying someone instead of innovating.

Why do server transfers cost at all when all it is is some guy taking a thumb drive from one room to another and sticking into the new server and testing it. :P

    Honest opinion-

The game is a lot of fun at first. The Soul system is interesting in that you have so much variety in a single class. The Rifts are quite fun and impressive at first.

I haven't leveled a character past about 32-35 though and no longer subscribe. Why?

The quests are extremely boring. Even trying to read the text to get the lore, they are just TOO efficient and stale. Move from quest hub to quest hub without any emotion or reason to invest in the story or characters or world.

WoW is and was much, much better in this regard as some of the quest lines were actually quite amazing (Silverpine Forest anyone?)

The Rifts get boring and repetitive too as there is nothing really dynamic about them at all. Way too predictable. No one talks and people barely work together unless you scream/beg/plead for any kind of support (healing/tanking).

The PvP is meh, I think WoW does it much better - just seems less fluid then WoW PvP and lacks the variety and roles WAR had at launch.

I haven't gotten any toons to max level so I haven't tried the raiding or expert mode dungeons, but the regular level-up dungeons are pretty standard fair stuff - when I was playing there were maybe two tank builds every used to just AoE grind down everything - boring.

Graphics are very good, but I like the "traditional" style of many of the armors. Apperance tab is a huge bonus to me.

If you can get Rift for cheap on a sale price and play for free for a month, try it.

That is my recommendation. Worth a month of free time for a discounted box price.

Hey guys, Can someone help me? I am patching Rift right now and it's at 9.48GB/9.48GB, but it suddenly slowed down from about 2 Mb/s to 1Kb-2.5k.b. I downloaded Rift before and never had this problem. Any info would me nice. thanks

If you don t mind being bored in a month or 2 , go for it.

Very strange. Did it finish? If not you can start a thread on the official forums because that does sound very odd almost like your ISP throttled your connection speed all of a sudden. Hopefully it is fixed.
