As so many others here I find it hard to pick a single favourite, but before Windows 7 I was still happily playing Master of Orion 2 on a regular basis (for some reason the mouse is glitched in it now and moves accross the entire map whenever I make the slightest move). It's the only game I actually bought several times myself and several times more just to send copies around the world. I still have 2 legal copies to this day and that's saying something since that game had no copy protection at all.
For the rest I love RPGs including Kotor-series, Mass Effect-series, Vampires the Masquearde: Bloodlines, but also oldies like Dark Queen of Krynn, or the Phantasy Star series.
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is one of my favourite RTS-games, but I'm just not too great at RTS-games, I miss the Turn based ones like Master of Orion 2, Master of Magic or HoMM I-IV.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Everquest up thru and including Velious. I still think back on it fondly-a truly magical time in gaming the first wave of major MMO titles (UO, AO/AC/EQ1/DAOC) Not going to see it again...
A close second for me would be EVE (nothing quite like an experienced group of pvp pilots working together night after night on vent).
Non-MMO would be Pitfall, Defender, Kings Quest 1, DaggerFall, Halflife
If I was told that there was only 1 game I could play for the rest of my life, it would have to be XCOM UFO Defense. I just can't get tired of that game no matter how old it looks.

I can never decide between X-Com and Master of Magic. Both are excellent.
