@just1opinion: Centipede! Ive seen that one pop up a few times now.
@Homitu: I was tempted to add Sonic and Knuckles instead of Sonic 3.
@Reizlanzer: I totally forgot about Rygar, damn! I should have made a top 100 list haha.
@GTwander: Actraiser is such a great game. I remember getting Actraiser 2 and promptly getting the crap kicked out of me. That was a ridiculously hard game heh.
@Bladestrom: The R-Type series always has a place in my heart. Such great sound and style to that series. I'm also a huge fan of the Raiden Fighter series for the same reasons.
@HoskTheCub: I love Yie-Ar Kung Fu.. but Best fighting game?
@FrodoFragins: I don't remember Super PunchOut! in the arcade. I had it on snes though and it rocks.
@Unlight: I feel your pain. Luckily, I live in a city that has an amazing arcade that is alive and kicking. As well as a very healthy and active classic gaming and pinball community.
@HoskTheCub: I love Yie-Ar Kung Fu.. but Best fighting game?
Well... it's all subjective and I'm sort of struggling in how to determine what is best since everything is like comparing apples and pears.
Yie Ar Kung Fu has shown that it manages to uphold two basic pillars that is part of being a great game:
1) I finished it (Although failing so many times as a child it was entertaining enough to keep me struggling to see the next fight until I finished it. Games that are longer than they can keep me interested are inherently flawed. Seeing the end is important to me).
2) Surviving the test of time. (Whenever I start the game it is still as fun as the first time I played it. Many of the other games that were fun at their time was it because they pushed the limits in some way, either with graphics, number of moves etc. Yie Ar Kung Fu just has that combination of correct game balance, music, atmosphere and gameplay that makes it immortal even though built with simple tools. If you consider game making to be an art, then Yie Ar Kung Fu is a masterpiece. It is really easy to find a flaw in a game, it is so hard to do in a masterpiece.)

Seeing some of these old classic games mentioned again really brings back fond memories of those old arcades from the 70s and 80s that just don't exist anymore. Galaga, Joust, Centipede, Afterburner (with full cockpit), Battle Zone, Defender, Zaxxon, Tron, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, Gauntlet, Qix, Robotron, Hyper Olympics (the pencil trick was my saviour), Pole Position, Spy Hunter, Ms. Pac-Man, Ghosts'n'Goblins, Xevious, Karate Champ (FUUUULL POINT! - half point), Sinistar ... the list is endless. Seeing your initials displayed in the #1 spot for all to see. Knowing that next week you'll have to return and wrest it back from some faceless usurper who'd driven you from your throne. Stealing money from mom's purse once the allowance had run dry -- then getting caught. Good times.
If there was one thing I could pull back from my childhood, it would probably be those old arcades.
mame arcade emulator is your friend
