Richard Garriot goes big brother!

Take a look at this CLICK

"A video game developer has discovered a way to work from home while keeping a close eye on his employees- a robot version of himself."

I wonder what he's working on "1984 the MMO" maybe?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

Now, they just need one for each employee, and everyone can work remote while having an office of robots standing around in a room.

well 25 employees hardly says it is a serious venture.I would say that he is doing what i last heard he was doing and that is browser based games.MArketing firms have made it clear to investors that is where to invest so i bet he is attaining a lot of investors money to play with.

I think he has  few loose nuts, with wasting all that money on trying to fly in space and buying this little toy is another waste of money.I wonder if all the jobless/homeless/starving people could use the tons of cash he wasted on that toy?

that doesn't surprise me at all. tho, i would expect "normal" people to use shared virtual desktops.

  • It's only fair for him to put up a camera in his office and broadcast what he is doing to the company now. No mid day batin sessions for you Garriot you haven't earned that right. Maybe if UO2 is ever released you will.

According to his twitter it seems like the new "ultima like" game is just going to be something for phones

Id sneak up behind it, grab it, and stand it in the corner.  And stick a large piece of furniture behind it so it couldnt move.  And take a half hour potty break.

Seriously....thats some creepy stuff right there.  I guess Garriot is having fun with that new settlement of his.

Does this guy even make games anymore?

At the very least he's making his employees pissed off!

It seems more creepy than helpful. Just IMO anyways.

Does his Austin offices have a stairwell? If not spill some coffee on it or something, I think Garriot believes he is in NWO now. :)

Yeah, he makes games, lame social games for Iphones and Facebook. Honestly, none of his fans even respect him anymore. He hasnt impressed us in a long time, not since UO. Everything he has done after that has been a collosal failure. Thats what happens when you turn your back on what made you and what you were good at in exchange for chasing after the next big fad.

    Bascially, Garriott WoWized himself....

I wonder if he sits at his computer and controls his robot and says, " hehehe....this is the BEST mmo ever.  Wow.  So cool.  "

Garriott's always been eccentric and weird, and absolutely marches to his own drum. This is no different.

I had a chance to hear one of his business partners in this new studio speak recently. They've got a definite point of view on gaming and some interesting ideas. None of those ideas will be UO2, since EA owns both the Ultima series and name, BTW. I'll be interested to see what happens.

Hell, if nothing else, the guy's not hurting for cash:

He's also selling his home here in Austin while he builds a new one. He's doing fine, even if the robot thing seems a bit odd.

He just won like 30 million, he probably wants to buy anything that seems remotely interesting lol.

Garriott loves weird tech, old and new, the odder the better.   And he can afford to exercise that hobby.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Lol, I think it's funny. I suppose the amount of control here is less than if he were there in person. ;)

Its HIS money to "waste".  I'd hardly call 15K for the bot, so that his mother could take part in the wedding a "waste".  He is the boss. If he wants to work from home, and supervise things in the office by bot, thats his call to make.  As for the other, if government wasn't wasting trillions of *other peoples money* perhaps there would be more jobs in this country to go around?

Um... you realize that we've been able to shadow users desktops without their knowing for a long time, right?  And also, we've been able to install web cams in offices for a long time too, right?

I think it's kind of funny having the robot there - makes me think of the movie Surrogates to an extent - far more than it makes me think of any big brother thing (which has been going on for a long time)...

You know we could be looking at the future here. When the boss says he will be working from home on Friday it could have a whole new meaning. :)

He'll be checking his iRobot app from his iPhone while at the ballgame?

Entirely possible. ^^  I have no idea why some people are creeped out over this.  Tele presence and bots are just applications. Its still the boss, and they (or one of their minions) are still signing the checks.
