Looking for a game that feels diffrent.

SiveriaSiveria Member UncommonPosts: 1,421

I been wondering is there any f2p mmo that feels diffrent than the normal shit that we always see? By being diffrent I mean stuff like Vindictus, Dungeon fighter Online, DDO etc. I am horribly bored with general mmorpgs like wow, and swtor is looking to be just the newest wow clone from everything I have read and seen. So sort of looking for a mmo that plays a tad diffrently. a good crafting system would be nice too. Graphically I am not so picky as long as the gameplay makes up for it. This fact about gameplay alone pretty much rules out any more recent mmo, because they are all damned boring, they all feel the same.

So any suggestions for me? No fps games though I don't feel like hearing 13 yr olds scream into their mic's when they get killed. Thanks all. Really desperate for some mmo to play by myself or maybe with a friend off and on.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

or

B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Of the ones that I know, DDO already on your list is one of the less stereotypical.

One that might be a kick is the original GuildWars.  With parties of your own characters + henchmen ranging from 4 (at the start) to 8 (at the end) the gameplay is way different than most.  It's questy but done very well with cut scenes and voice acting.

Assuming you're not looking to grind skills in a PVP environment (Darkfall), not much comes to mind.  Maybe the super-hero games, but I know squat about them.

Besides what you've already mentioned, the following are all very non WoW like.

Fallen Earth Recently went f2p. Open world pvp, but not full loot. Fairly fluid controls, and a decent user interface. Crafting matters. Very grey, repetitive, scifi setting (realistic post apoctalyptic scenery).

Mortal Online Subscription. Full loot, open world pvp. Crafting matters. Non instanced, but non customizable housing. Extremely far draw distance, but because the landscape is basically empty and low poly count, but with high res textures... Beautiful skydome with changing weather as well as day/night cycles, faster than real time. First person view only. Full nudity for both sexes, with "realistic" (ugly) models, and virtually no customization (but you never see yourself anyway).

Darkfall Subscription. Full loot, open world pvp. Clunky user interface. Supposed to be getting an overhaul update (this has been being said for at least a year that I know of).

Runescape Optional subscription for more content. Full loot free for all pvp in an area called the Wilderness. Click to move only... in fact all actions are done by clicking... and waiting... but the quests are actually entertaining. And there's a new minigame that's basically randomized "puzzle solving" based dungeons, that can be done solo or with a sort of party.

Age of Conan Recently went f2p. Tits. Not-so-impressive resource-wasting poor example of what dx11 is capable of, or meant for graphics.

Eve Subscription, but you can buy game time with in game gold. The human avatars are currently just for looks, and the real game content is played as a spaceship, but apparently they've been slowly developing gameplay for the human avatars, and are going to add it in, little by little.

League of Legends F2p. Not really an mmo, but rather popular for some reason. My friend loves it...

Its DirectX 9 and 10 compatible. DirectX 11 is not supported.

Or 10, w/e. It still wastes resources and doesn't look that great.

Was it WoW I was thinking of that had dx11, for no apparent reason?

I get what you mean about MMOs these days, and I feel the same way. I'm not playing anything right now - just Minecraft and Osu until Skyrim comes out. And then Guild Wars 2. If you didn't like DDO or Vindictus, there's a slim chance of finding anything you'll like for free, but here are a few other F2P MMOs that differ from the WoW-clone variety in terms of gameplay.

Dragon Nest is like Vindictus in that it is arcade-style, intance-based gameplay. Cartoony graphics, but fun nonetheless. I stopped playing after the Open Beta because I'm tired of instance-based games and it's hard to talk to people in Dragon Nest. Gameplay was pretty mash-n-smash enjoyable.

Have you tried Maplestory or one of its many clones? It is a 2D side-scroller, but it was actually really fun for a while. I stopped years ago because of it was hacker-infested, and now I hate it for other reasons. Easy to talk to people, make friends, and form groups, though.

I think Ragnarok Online is free now. I played on a private server long time ago, and I kept wondering about how the real thing felt. Tons of classes, 2.5D graphics.

Champions Online is a super-hero game. But, actually if you replaced all the cities with forests and all the superhero powers with swords and bows, it plays like any other fantasy mmorpg. Maybe you just need a change of scenery. Also, DC Universe Online is free starting today.

Try a space-shooter. There was one a long time ago called Space Cowboy Online. It was shut down and then re-released as ACE Online (AirRivals for EU). You basically fly around in a spaceship and kill stuff. It gets really boring unless you participate in the huge faction wars they have. The PvP is intense and really fun. One of the best communities I've played with.

Oh, but the best is RUNESCAPE. It's the bomb, man! It's the best game out there! lol....

Yes WoW can use DX11 for it's water graphics, which are by far the best water graphics ever in an mmo (not reflection based textures, but actual 3d water with full reflections and it moves with player interaction).  If you set water graphics to ultra it uses DX11 to render, although it really isn't the best showcase for DX11.

AoC's water is infinitely better than WoW's. WoW used to have the worst water, except underwater, which was par when the game came out, and has never been updated. Now it has only slightly sub par water all round. Slightly better than the average N64 game's water. The "not reflection based textures, but actual 3d water with full reflectionsyou're talking about, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you're talking about the fact that you can see through the reflections. That's just 32 bit color. It's called an Alpha value. WoW has scene based reflections, not real reflections. And as for the water "moving" there's no mesh movement, at all. Not even at the shoreline. It's still totally flat. All they added was an animated texture that kinda looks like a whiteish v shaped ripple thingy that follows you around.

AoC has true refraction (wow has a screen distortion effect underwater, that kinda looks like refraction), above and below water, and godrays, which basically apply lighting and shading 3 dimensionally inside the water, to make it look like this:

Note how it actually makes the trees in the upper left corner, which are above water, look like squigglies, because it's refracting them. Right below that is a couple really beautiful godrays.

And still I stand by what I said. AoC's graphics aren't as good as they could be, for how much resources they use.

Watch a few videos for Crysis 1. That's what AoC should look like. WoW, if using dx11, should look like Crysis 2.

You completely misunderstood what I meant by "not reflection based textures, but actual 3d water with full reflections".  I'm talking about the surface.  If you look at games like Lotro and Aion, the water is flat.  In those games the textures and color changes create the effect that the water is 3D.  But if you look at the surface, it is flat.  WoW's water isn't flat (anymore). It's fully 3d, and interacts with player movement, it's called normal mapping.

And you're wrong about WoW's reflections being scene based.  When you enable the 'Ultra' setting for the water graphics, it enables DX11 (must have a DX11 card and OS to even enable this option).  This gives full reflections of the world.

You can't just say "Watch a few videos for Crysis 1. That's what AoC should look like. WoW, if using dx11, should look like Crysis 2."  Lol, that makes no sense.  Just because a certain game is made with DX11 compatible graphics does not mean every other DX11 compatible game is gonna look the same, rofl.  The games are built off entirely different engines by completely different developers....

Also, take note, WoW's water is not an attempt at realism.  Yes it uses a nice engine able to utilize DX11, but the water itself still fits within WoW's art style.  It does not look as realistic as many other games, like AoC, Lotro...  But it is still more graphically advanced than those games.  Remember, I'm just talking about the surface.

I do agree with you that the underwater graphics in AoC are far superior, as are the graphics of AoC in general.  AoC's engine uses DX10 for the entire game.  I don't think anything in WoW, except the water, uses above DX9 technology, lol.  AoC is a beautiful game, and I hope it influences future mmos.

Lol...its funny you think Vindictus, DFO and DDO are actually different. Guess we see things differently here...although I know I can be a bit awkward in here sometimes...

Anyway...Neverwinter Nights 1 might not come across as the "standard MMO"....but I'd recomend it full heartedly....and you did want "different" right?

Go keep an eYe on Lineage 2, It is going f2p without the need to ever spend on it (only xp boosts and vanity items in the shop)

And this game rates under my top 5 mmo's ever :D

enjoy, should be f2p by the end of the year I think :D

    A few different suggestions:

Atlantica: Turn based, very differently from the rest. Can't stand it myself but still worth trying.

Sword of the new world: Very beutiful and not at all like most MMOs, but the character customization suck and the combat system is odd.

AoC: In some ways not different, but the combat is somewhat fresh and it is still the best looking MMO. Worth a look at least.

World of tanks: Not sure if I would call this a MMO but it sure aint like other games.

Guildwars: B2P, not F2P so you do need a box that you can find in a sales bin at your local computer store but on the other hand don't you need anything from the item shop as you play. Best character customization since you choose exactly what skills to use and not, and no tanking. The best game on the list.

QFT. ACE Online dogfighting is the most fun I've ever had in an MMO.
