What will be the Top MMORPG in 2012?

Guys,

What do you think? what is going to be the top-notch MMO in 2012? Do you think it is going to be one of upcoming MMORPGs or a continuous popularity for one of the existing MMOs?

Lol. I am kind of disappointed in overall quality of new MMORPGs too but still among them some MMOs are less duplicate and worth playing. :)

    WoW(West)

    Aion(Central Asia)

    FFXIV(Japan)

    Honorable mentions:

    TERA

    GW2

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I think that the new MMOs of 2012 have a great deal more to offer us than any of those games you listed that are highlighted red.

that, and I doubt FFXIV really deserves to be on that list.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Well Wow will still have the most Subs

but SWTOR will prob have the most for new MMO's

GW2 Will probably sell a smack load of boxes as well, I think the diference is , SWTOR will see numbers decline with time, while GW will see a steady incline as word gets out thats its not a clone and fun and B2P

No, it could be one of the existing MMOs too. actually it is quite possible that one of the existing MMORPGs remain the most popular in 012 beating all the new releases.

I think it will be the opposite.  SWTOR will continue to climb as far as subs goes as world of mouth gets out about how good the game is.  More players from WoW and Rift will continue to switch over to SWTOR.  Meanwhile, GW2 will sell a bunch of boxes and do very well, but many players will ultimately leave that game between expansions due to lack of endgame content. There is only so many DE's and Mist instanced PvP that people can do before they start getting bored and taking a break between expansions.  Even ArenaNet has acknowledged that they expect people will need to take a break from the game at some point.

I think that GW2 and (this would have been Tera till D3 and Titan possiblty ) STWOR will have it. If Archage comes over all the sandbox lovers and a few others will make it pretty freakin close. Lineage Eternal I HOPE!! Will be a bit of a contender now this is all without WoW.

With wow its proably going to still be WoW. You cant take away 10m subs in a year unless its utter shutdown. Just not to probale. Now with that said i think that its going to go around this line up.

    1.WoW

    2.Gw2 or SWTOR

    3.what falls from 2

    4.LET(lineage eternal)

    5.Tera

    6.Archage

    7.D3

    8.Torchlights (2 or 3rd?)

    9. Who knows .

changed my post to clarify what i meant and to account for that possibility.  However, being the completely obsessed GW2 fanboy that I am, I am going to have to disagree with you on the likelyhood that past MMOs are going to be better than the new ones.

It seems to me that the upcoming MMOs are all trying to be at least a little bit mroe than same old, same old...I am going to give them a chance (though that doesn't mean I will play any of them other than GW2)

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Top in terms of what?  If subscriptions, I don't see WoW dropping out of first place and globally MOP could do very well.

In terms of consumer appeal, western markets... obvious major players are SW:TOR and GW2, with Rift doing non-stop promotions and content patches trying to stay relevant given the new competition.

Other than those 4, no clue.

Im just going to address this one point here and argue this:  "the top-notch MMO in 2012" doesn't mean most subs, most concurrent players, most profit earned, it means most new, most interesting, most fun, best designed and so on.

with the latter group being of a subjective nature, bring up WoW sub numbers really doesn't matter for top-notch MMO in 2012.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

I really hope so. I am kind of tired of the same old concepts with lots of grinding and just different monsters and graphics. I really see lots of empty places for great new MMORPGs but per my experience most of investors prefer tested approaches that make money over creative ideas and therefore not many creative ideas emerging in MMO space.

swtor's going to be an anomaly, i reckon. so many of us have been burned too often on game franchises and star wars has left so many burns i don't think a few skin grafts is gonna fix it very fast. of COURSE we're all interested in it, and secretly we want it to be AWEsome. but previous star wars experience shows it's great - for a few minutes. then it all starts slowly unravelling at the seams.

i'm personally going with gw2. only because it SEEMS to be trying something which is desperately needed in the mmo kitchen: a breath of fresh air.

my vote on the biggest of 2012 would be gw2. i think swtor will come in close second, though. i think for the first year ever, wow is in for a bit of a challenge. and that's a good thing, really.

although, am i the only one thinking wow is getting more and more like a console game?

    Agree with this.

Can't believe people actually think the opposite... and what's worse is that if it happens, what does that say about are fellow gamers?

That they like old, out-dated gaming models that encourage mindless grinding at "end-game".... and that very same "end-game" is identical in every damn game in the last 15 years? And that they're happy to press buttons to scripted encounters over and over again which is something a job of trained monkeys can do?

Log in every day and do dailies like robots? Queue for dungeons every day and make the game feel like one giant chore like laundry?

So sad if that's actually the case. Only time will tell.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

I need to take this advice more.

GW2 and I only need to refer to the youtube video "top 10 reasons why you should be INTERESTED in GW2" or something like that :)
If it succeeds I want to see what kind of marketing strategies (excuses) expensive P2P titles come up with.
There aren't that many left as it is.

    2012:

    1 - SWTOR

    2 - GW2

    2013:

    1 - GW2

    2 - SWTOR

WOW is a dead body so it doesn't count.

  • ZylaxxZylaxx Member Posts: 2,574

GW2 by a landslide.  I'd say roughly around 2-3 million by the end of the year.

SWToR will do good to retain 500k.  Thats still a good number but I see alot of people leaving it because of the "been there, done that" factor is very high in the game.

In terms of number of players in the west, WoW will remain number 1. SWTOR will initially become number 2 but will slowly be taken over by GW2 is my prediction. In terms of total number of players in the world, well... WoW will still be number 1, but guessing number 2 is beyond me.

i bet if you add up GW2 and SWTOR subscribers at both peaks they wont come anywhere near half of WoW's present subscribers.

Hahahahah well said my man well said. Right now am looking forward to TERA, Open world Action based MMORPG with an epic Political System? YES PLZ. Tbh I have a feeling that Blizzard will make the new expac a Huge sucess and even GW2 and SWTOR together wont be able to hurt it for more than a month or 2.

Well If TERA gets something like 300k+ players then I am as happy as i can get. Just remember that the New MOP is going to focus on open world stuff so many of the good old vanilla fans might be attracted to it.

WoW has lost 1,1 million the last 6 months, it will probably lose 3 million next year, so it will be down to 6-7 million by 2013.

SW-TOR has about 1 million preorders in USA at release, so about 2 million will buy it at release.

The problem is people wont stay very long after they have played it through, so I dont see SW-Tor come much higher than 2-3 million, then it will decline.

Guild Wars 2 is still 6-12 months away sadly, but GW2 has so many new ideas, so this game will just get bigger and bigger.

    2012 (end)

    1. WoW  6-7 million

    2. SW-Tor  2,5 million

    3. GW2  2 million (just released)

    2013 (end)

    1. GW2  5-10 million

    2. WoW  4 million

    3. SW-Tor 1-2  million

  • FozzikFozzik Member UncommonPosts: 539

I agree with those who say that SW:TOR will likely sell more initially, and then fall off steeply in the first few months. WoW will maintain its top spot in terms of subscribers in 2012, but it will continue to decline. GW2 will sell very well initially, and will steadily climb in numbers as people learn about the game. So...

    1. WoW (downward trend)
    2. GW2 (upward trend)
    3. SW:TOR (downward trend)
    4. Secret World
    5. Rift, if it goes F2P...may trend upwards a bit, otherwise, it's going to fall

Wildcards: Copernicus, if it launches around Q4...could surpass Secret World and Rift pretty quickly. WildStar? Hard to say.

Probably Diablo 3 (even with the microtransactions)

If D3 isn't an MMO, then WoW.

GW and SWTOR are cool but overhyped I think.

  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441

It is really hard to say.

Most likely will B2P still be ruled by Wow 2012 as well as 2011. If you count onlty Western subs then TOR might actually compete with it but it is hard to say yet.

F2P will probably still be ruled by Perfect world and other games from the same company.

I am sure Guildwars 2 will do pretty fine as well, but it is not really fair to compare B2P with P2P or F2P.

We still need a good deffinition what an active player is for that. Heck, Wow have different ways of counting people from NA/EU and China even and that is the same game. F2P games usually counts accounts, active or not and B2P game counts sold boxes.

Anyways, I don't think we see that huge change next year, it will be 2013 where things change. Wow is still too large to be beaten by other P2P games but it is losing players pretty fast now and probably will in 2012 as well.

I think in the next few years there will be harder competition in the top though. It will be interesting time (yeah, I know that is a curse).

    I'm burnt out.

I'm getting up there in age.

I use lotion to keep my skin from getting crusty, but damn - my ears have been dry of late.

As far as the coming crop of games:

SWTOR holds no interest for me in the least.  I see no MMORPG innovation there.  GW2 holds a little interest - but absolutely no interest in playing the game . . . it is just a case I actually see them trying to be innovative.  TERA never interested me enough even to form an opinion on it.  TSW lost me with some of the sketchy info on it.

Look at the sheer number of games that launched this year (you might be surprised if you don't take a look at the games list).  Look at the number of games that are going to launch later this year and into next year.

The way things are going - it will not be a single game that is the top MMORPG, so to speak - it will be a class of games that end up being "that top game" so to speak.

The F2P Social MMO...is set to take 2012 by storm.  I despise that.  I loathe that.  I have a 15/100 rating from often stating my opinion on F2P gaming...lol, meh, bah...but I can see the writing on the wall.

The economy is still in the toilet.  2012 is an election year.  The 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Yep, I fully expect to see the LinkedIn try to find a job MMO, the try to be President MMO, and the Olympic Sports MMO.  Every half decent movie, TV show, book, and possibly pop song will end up with a MMO.  Online retail outlets might develop MMOs to represent virtual storefronts where customers can talk to customer support NPCs and do quests to get coupons.

Oh well, perhaps it is just a case of how I started out this particular post...I'm burnt out.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
