The Secret World: Unveiling The Templars

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com and Funcom have partnered to bring our readers an exclusive first look at the Templars, where they've come from and who they are. Templars are one of the three secret societies coming with The Secret World. Keep reading to find out some of the back story about this ancient society. Let us know what you think in the comments.

The true origin of the Templars is still unknown, but some claim they can be traced back as far as the land between the two rivers and the rise of the Mesopotamian city-states, through Babylon and the Persian Empire, even to the marble floor of the Roman Senate. From there they spread their all-encompassing wings over Europe where they sat comfortably with kings, generals and popes. Their rise and arrogance was so great that the other secret societies conspired to bring them down. And they almost succeeded in the 1300s.

Double dipping business model overshadow all fairly interesting features of this game for me.

Shame. Well, this one is not for me.

Gah. Can't help myself thinking about that freak Anders Breivik when looking at that last pic.

    hype train on the decline?

The reason they "double dip" is that they know TSW will go f2p eventually, and it makes sense to install the mechanisms now, making the transition cheaper. Plenty of struggling sub based mmos cannot justify the risk of going f2p, losing both subs and the cost of convertion. As the clothing is cosmetic in the game, and cannot be otherwise, I dont see a problem, innocent untill proven guilty.

    @zev

But it is still "double dipping". They are charging a sub and also having a cash shop. For me, that is a deal breaker. If they truly intend to go F2P as you claim, then have the balls to release the game F2P from the start and be done with it.

i have everything against Funcom, but nothing against the -idea- of TSW.. which results in my holding no hope whatsoever, it's Funcom's..though sincerelly doubting it, i'd be well satisfied to be informed on how dead wrong i am..which as i said, i am doubting it..just forget the whole story bull, and focus on what they have put out regarding combat,  starting area/tutorial, game mechanics, and so on..

which brings me to my question..anyone from the forum that has been in a beta? not so to break the NDA for my benefit..merely to tell me, no, it's not a typical Funcom MMO, or yes, there are as many resemblances as folks fear?

edit: as for the RMT coming with launch, your fault if you purchase the game..sorry, but truth be told..you let no limits be imposed, they'r just gonna keep milking you..you reap what you sow

    nethstar:

hype train can hardly be in decline when they have never started it.  And seriously that's a good thing.

    Overhyping a game is terrible.

It's the ol' MMORPG.com way though..

Overhype a game.. Then trash it when it gets released..

This game will be no different..

WoW has a cash shop, so does TOR, and? I personally don't care if its only for vanity Items, oh EVE has one too, all three games are sub based. You don't/won't play any of these?

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

  • I have to say I honestly find it amusing that some people cut there nose off to spite there face, having both is not that big of a deal, you either like the game or you dont, and if your as shallow and shot sighted as to let that affect your choice of games you allow yourself to play, I say a big "goodbye" to you and am glad to see at least one troll wont be in game to add to the Sh*t slinging and endless whining.  I think this is going to be a great game, funcom has been a good studio for many years and I wont sell this title short for that reason alone.  I look forward to experiancing it and play till my fingers bleed and eyes burn :)

Cheers  ( please if I spelled some thing wrong dont send the "Spelling Gestapo" after me LOL

It was already said that the items in the cash shop will ALSO be available through in game missions. Some people will have the satisfaction of questing for the item and some just want to buy it cuz they're lazy and have the $.Also it was said there will be no items in the cash shop that will give unfair advantage. So people can stop crying about double dipping now and start talking about the actual AWSOME game that it is!

Boicotting TSW because of their business model is like boicotting the Star Wars movies because they make money on Star Wars Lego.

    Just silly really

What matters to me is if the game is P2W.  If it is then yes I will not play it if it has a subscription as well.

Well then i can tell you that you need to have no fear, since everything in the cash shop will be fuff itema and maybe some increased XP potion... Things that does not make you better but let you do things quicker/with less time invested.

This have been a good conversation

I lost some of my interest in this game after watching some in game footage of it. Looked highly instanced for one thing and the combat didnt capture me all that well.

Never the less, Im still looking forward to it.  I also hope they can impliment some type of great new age grouping system that allows players to play with each other to the best of the abilities.  WOH has a cool warband system, be nice to see something like that in another mmo.

Still can hardly wait for this one.  I'm a little envious of the Templar setting, since London is such a beautiful city anyway.  But we Dragon are clearly the winners when it comes to fashionable dress.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

"MMORPG.com and Funcom have partnered" - what does that mean anyway? They are entering into a civic partnership? They have become one company? It is an exclusve? :)

They're Templars. They should be using LAZ0R RIFELZ! PEW PEW PEW PEW. Any objection to this argument will be met with a laser beam to the face.

Okay... on-topic, the faction sounds interesting but not enough to make me care about the game. If it releases and does well, I'll probably check it out later down the road.
