This. This idea suddenly came to mind and I felt like coming and posting it on this forum. Lo and behold, on the same day, you post this. Funny world.
Although Asterix isn't a game world, it is a rich, humorous, well developed world with plenty of diversity and depth, as well as character development and plot-lines.
Magic potion being the main boost behind the game, this would be fun and could be quite richly drawn and rewarding.
I agree with you list, but for Final Fantasy I always thought FFXII and tactics (similar but not same worlds) would've made a good MMO. While my personal favorite is FFX, and I think several are better single player games, FFXII had a good world and it would've fit a MMO theme better with the world naturally having clans and the heroes not really special, unlike other final fantasies where the characters were pretty much the chosen few. Though any would be good ultimately, making a FFXII/Tactics based MMO wouldn't recieve as much hate for not fitting what people percieve the world is suppose to be like.

Yay for .hack// . I would love to see an MMO based on it. I mean, if you ever had something fit for being made into an MMO, it's .hack// . The setting is about playing an MMO, with only a few offline sequences, the games simulate playing an MMO complete with login in, forum, friends..
It's like having half the work done already. Skills, character classes, enemies, guild system..and with the GMs and hackers..if they would include that layer, too..obviously not real GMs/hacker if it would be made an MMO, but imagine being able to choose between playing a normal character and a hacker. The later could be awarded for something. Playtime, quest progess, special quest, putting effort into the community, whatever. hack// featured so many stuff usually outside the box when talking about MMOs.
They could actually make an MMO in which you play somebody that plays an MMO, that would be even more true to to .//hack. Complete with not being able to log out (from the game inside the game. .hack//infection etc. probably featured that already (did not play it enough - yet)?) and stuff. This would allow for the aforementioned "hacker" and "GM" gameplay that was always part of .hack//, without having to implement a special system.
And one of the best thing is, the anime showed a lot of different playstyles. Just take Tsukasa and Haseo from .hack//sign and .hack//roots as an example. The first almost never fought and even his friends where surprised he still had such a low level etc., the later did fight and fight and fight to get stronger, switched to player-killer and player-killer-killer..
PK is something delicate, most people including me would ragequit within seconds after meeting Haseo, but still, it showed the possibilities. It's does not always have to be about "kill 10 rats" or "kill boss over and over again until you are fast/lucky enough to loot what you want", or "RAID RAID RAID".
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
First off I will say I am more enamored with original IP's designed and built around the lore of the game to be released. More often then not a game based on an IP made for another median usually fails to deliver or the developers are stuck following the cannon of the game and having little or no innovation to chage something for the better.
With that being said my top 5 are:
1. Tamriel: Tamriel is the continent where the events of all The Elder Scrolls games take place.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
It would, and would be fairly easy to render. The graphics don't need to be stellar (should not be, just keep it true to the books and then some), a laid back playstyle (gauls are laid back people!), a magic potion system, a persistent world. Doesn't even have to have too many players to have a good world. The world is so rich full of stories, characters, humor, (botched) history. I know no other truly immersive world like that. There are other comics (tintin, some anime and manga I am sure), but theres something about asterix that just has depth, originality and creativity. The lightness and playfulness of the world with its more focused, serious elements and historical references make it a really well drawn cartoon.
An Arcanum world based on "Aracanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura"
YES.
For the most part though, MMOs really piss on IPs and ruin them. So out of respect for wonderful worlds, I'm going to go with the unpopular "NONE" option.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I'm biased because these are some of the top games that jumped out at me as a kid. But giving it a lot of thought I also could see how a massive player game version set in these various worlds could be realistic with today's tech.
Shadowrun (or cyberpunk) just needs to be here. We love it, we miss it, we want it. MechWarrior's getting a treatment right? I actually enjoyed Breath of Fire 3 way more than I did Final Fantasy 7. Dragons, cool backstory, variety of races and classes, magic and fight system already established with cool things like morphing two players together. Secret of Mana, still influences RPGs to this day, nuff said. C&C.. Actually getting on the ground in the crazy world struggle for Tiberium with weapons and wmds with the GDI forces fighting off the zealots of the Brotherhood of NOD? YES please.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
2- LoTR ( a proper one not a re-hashed WoW, massive world battles, construction of cities and castles etc.. )
3- Naruto ( This would be awesome I dont like anime but there is something about this IP, all the RPG elements are already there its all already designed )
1. Elder Scrolls (I know, mentioned a lot already as #1)
2. Abeir-Toril - For those not familiar with it. This is the planet that the Forgotten Realms settings holds (more than just Baldur's gate and Waterdeep, but also the Kara-Tur (Eastern Asia setting - Japan/ancient China) and Al-Quadim (Arabian Nights - based on 1001 nights stories).
3. Krynn - An other Dungeons & Dragons setting, but also the IP of Hickman & Weiss: DragonLance, including the other continent on the planet holding a minotaur race
4. Mass Effect - Just started playing part 1, and love it already. Have #2 waiting as well.
5. Star Trek - Not the crap Cryptic made, but one that really is about exploration and war (PvP) against more than just the Klingons.
Thus I definitely dont need a multitude of game worlds out there.
What I would need is a new Vanguard at the most distant horizont.
But I guess SW:TOR will have to do in case of the current Vanguard being shut down (Vanguard is really low on players, and I'm forced to play on the american server with bad ping, thats the only real problem I have with it).

Everything you need to know about Elder Scrolls Online

WESTEROS!
YES.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.
1. Tamriel/TES mmo- where the hell is this game?
2. RIFTS based off the pen and paper rpg the possibilities are endless with this one
3. Naruto
4. Harry Potter
5. Pokemon
6. A REAL Transformers mmo based off of War for Cybertron or G1, not that trite that Jagex is bringing out.
7. Astro City- yes the comic book good god we need a new GOOD superhero mmo that will beat COH/COX
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Wow haha, I forgot about .hack! That game was awesome.! My top 3 would be..
3)Game of Thrones (I know its not a game, but man I love the world in the books...)
2)Elder Scrolls Series (Ultimate sandbox right here)
1)Mass Effect (With the shooter-esque gears of war based gameplay, hell yes)
I could not think of more because honestly most of the games I would like to see as an MMO are already one or have been planned to be one =P
1. Shadowrun
2. MechWarrior
3. Breath of Fire (come on Capcom, you owe me.)
4. Secret of Mana
5. Command & Conquer
I'm biased because these are some of the top games that jumped out at me as a kid. But giving it a lot of thought I also could see how a massive player game version set in these various worlds could be realistic with today's tech.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
1. Elder scrolls
2. Shadowrun (based on roleplaying game, not the horrible shooter)
3. Mass Effect
4. Dragon Age
5. Paranoia, as long as there was permadeath, free-for-all PVP and "phat l33t" loot had a way of randomly failing during critical missions
D&D Home Page - What Class Are You? - Build A Character - D&D Compendium
Any of these would be EPIC in my book.
1- Elder Scrolls
2- LoTR ( a proper one not a re-hashed WoW, massive world battles, construction of cities and castles etc.. )
3- Naruto ( This would be awesome I dont like anime but there is something about this IP, all the RPG elements are already there its all already designed )
4- Castlevania
5- Dragon Age
Hmm...So many choices, but this is what I whittled it down to. Gameworlds that needed to be made into an MMORPG.
5) D&D Dark Sun series (its making a comback!)
4) Magic of Xanth (Not a gameworld, but would be fun)
3) Grand Theft Auto (cops vs criminals?)
2) Tie: Shadowrun vs Rifts RPG (tough choice)
1) The Elder Scrolls.
Actually I completely forgot another game that would have been an awesome MMO:
Thief
5. Pokemon
4. Alagaesia (Eragon)
3. Westeros (Game of Thrones)
2. .hack//
1. FIREFLY, I know that someone tho i forget who has the rights to the IP but se
Berserk
Jak and dexter
One Piece
Also an evolution mmo(like spore but than much better)

5. Star Trek - Not the crap Cryptic made, but one that really is about exploration and war (PvP) against more than just the Klingons.
Well ... I play MMOs this way:
1. Pick a game.
2. Play it for years.
