WOW vs TOR, a beta tester video

As someone who played WOW for the first time last spring and also who has played TOR since last summer, this video takes several minutes to go over the TOR vs WOW debate one criteria at a time.

Here's the categories I compare in the video:

- Graphics

- Sound

- PVP

- PVE

- Sandbox Features

- Fluff

Awsome video! very fair comparisons. I will obviously be playing TOR, since I have no friends and thats what you reccomend. LOL

Thank you. Very informative, even though I have never played any of the games. Yet...

Nicely done vid, though IMO not very honest. What's the point of comparing a 7-year old fully extended MMO that has already learned from past mistakes vs somehting completely new? NOTHING if you ask me.

There were some nice poits of interest though in the comparisation. Especially the raid (endgame) content you mentioned. Funny to see that TOR has more there that's worth playing compared to WoW now...

Aside from that, I'd love to see a similar vidio when TOR is 1 year down the road, or even after it's 1st expansion...

Pretty surprised about Swtor winning the PVE comparison in the maker's opinion.

WOW winning the PVP comparison should have been a bit more elaborated on though: as it might have won the INSTANCED pvp comparison but there are more flavors to pvp.

Personally, as a WORLD pvp fan, I am glad that Swtor has no Arena's and the recently announced FFA area on Tatooine (where only group members are green to you) sounds very exciting to me.

    Great video!

One can argue about one or another point you made, but in the end it's always about opinion as well.

Isn't it a shame for this website that usually the better reviews are coming from users -or in your case even first time posters- while the official ones can barely be taken for anything serious?

This clip is also a message to all these self-proclaimed "gamer-chicks with an attitude" and their supposed to be reviews. One can in fact make a good review without shameless self-portrayal, sitting there tarted up infront of a webcam fishing for compliments in the comments more than actual game related content.

Well done an thanks for the effort.

oO... you can actually KILL your OWN SIDE? That's awesome! Not I'll roll on a PvP server for sure :D

Yeah, and even better: it's on all server types too :)

It's a FFA dedicated (but open) area on the Tatooine map where you can go all out renegade + use rare spawn vendors with special goodies and crafting nodes, etc, for more incentives to venture out there. Simple but great addition imo.

That...sounds like fun.  Hope it's a big enough area.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Great job on the vid.  Some cool TOR shots in it.

Great, honest and fair video that is understandable even for people like me that have neither played WoW nor TOR yet. Very well done!

    I agree Mr Pony.

The video isn't bad but on one aspect in particular, (PVP), the OP is spouting a few things which aren't really correct.  For instances saying:'...Arena is poised to become an e-sport where people can make a living from'...(paraphased), is at best, an opinion thats two years out of date.  It's well known that Blizzard have been trying to get away from the arena focus of previous pvp and back to more instance and world pvp.  Hell, even MOP is suppose to focus on the conflict between Alliance and Horde in the actual game world.  What that will actually mean is another thing but arena play isn't the up and coming thing it was three years ago.

Also I would say on advantage to TOR with pvp is that everyone is starting on the same level.  With WoW at the moment you will get slapped all over the place for a while just for the sheer fact that everyone else is so far ahead of you on gear and of course skill.  At least getting into TOR now you'll be as clueless as everyone else :P

I think with the PVE side the OP was hinting at something that a lot of people have been complaining about with WOW with endgame and thats the lack of new content. I believe 4.2 came out July? Which was essentially a new raid, a load of boring dailies and two rehashes of old dungeons.  With TOR your going to have a freshness because things are all new, the question will be long term if they can keep a pace with new content.

Not bad overall and thanks for posting :)

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!

    Nice Review Suzina.

Here's hoping there's yet more to do at endgame once I get there in about a year.

  • KalferKalfer Member Posts: 779

Good job on this. You did a nice summery of some overall points. There are always a few nitty bitty things to say, but overall it was just the visual presentation that was lacking and the graphics  settings of TOR, but besides that it was surprisingly good.

Thank you very much for your review., which is very interesting and informative. I now have a very much better idea if I'm going to like TOR than before - Good Job :)

Liked the vid. Exactly what I was looking for as an ex-wow player who actually liked alot of what WoW has to offer (ofcourse there are many parts I don't like). Thanks!

Well, Suzina did not mention that WoWs end game have progressed for so many years. If Blizzard wanted they could have buffed all the dungeons in Vanilla, in burning crusade and in Lich King to heroric lvl 85 and just drop "good" loot in all of them. Had that been the case it would have been the most versitile end game known to man.

TOR is going to have the same problems as it is with themeparks once expansions come out and level cap increases. I believe that TOR will launch with 16-ish Flashpoints. It's my understanding that all of them have a heroric version for lvl 50 were you can get end game gear. So that's around 7-8 end game "dungeons" for both republic and empire, and then you have 2 raids, so you got perhaps 10 strictly pve end game areas to go. Then you have the solo end game on illum and the infinity space mini game and maxing out your companions and their crafting.

It seems above and beyond of any MMO on it's release date thus far, plus you get 3 warzones and a world pvp area.

The question is - will it be fun!!!

Naive vid from someone who has little experience in MMOs. Especially praising ToR's combat was funny, which compared to WoW is complete shit

    In what way exactly?

    Based on what?

I think they have cleaned up the animations a lot. the lack of auto-attack is a great thing(as explained here ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDEay7nxwMA ). As for balancing I couldn't say, but I believe they took some good ideas from other games.

For example I'm looking forward to seeing how Tanks will work in PvP. They took something from Warhammer called Guard were you can actually tank in pvp. you protect a target and thus are able to take 50% damage from a friendly target. from what I have heard it seems that this changes the dynamics of pvp mmo combat a lot, as suddenly tanks with high hit points are very vital and important for pvp.

it was always just about healing and high damage, but now it seems that a third sphere has entered and that's exciting.

hot key based combat does not have to suck just because it's hot key based.

Finally, regardless of experience in MMO, does not make her opinion any less valid. you could have been there at the dawn of muds and still have little of interest to say. Take it for what it is.
