- Forgotten Realms: Definitely. If the whole continent would be implemented, even more so. Real issue would be how much and how far and what version of DnD would be implemented, though. For example, how would the "spells refresh during sleep" rule be modified.
- Shadowrun : Sure.
- Fallout: Sure, though that setting doesnt appeal to me personally.
- Terry Pratchett's Discworld: this actually could be massive fun, but I bet its extremely hard to pull off, because the whole game would need to be very original in order to result in an actually substantially different experience from normal fantasy MMOs.
- Dragon Age: This setting has underwhelmed me.
- The Elder Scrolls: no thank you. Unless its extremely different from the games, I fail to see the point. TES simply is another pretty generic fantasy setting. I fail to see any advantages of this setting over others, except if you like to play a humanoid cat or humanoid saurian, or if you prefer your fantasy settings free from dwarves.
- Paranoia with permadeath ... : err MMOs cannot have permadeath. In the case of Paranoia, it makes sense, but Paranoia is a very specific gameworld where you die all the time - this is kind of the idea of the whole thing. I dont really see how you can make this into a MMO. You would lose everything constantly, there wouldnt be an economy or anything, and you basically would be bored after a month playing, at most.
- Diablo: Another generic fantasy setting.
- Firefly: Um, this would have to expand heavily on what we saw in the movies or it wouldnt constitute much of a gameworld.
- Asterix: ??? I have no clue how this is supposed to work ???
- Resident Evil : err because its so interesting to fight Zombies all the time ?!?
- .hack// : never heard of that one.

Hurr ok again not a setting that appeals to me, but not bad.
I'm not here to criticize anyone's picks, but share my own. I love everyones responses, while some might not have great compatibility as full fledge MMO's, they would all make good games in their own right.
Kingdom Hearts: Three factions, able to conquer worlds, eventually unlock and lead the battle to Kingdom Hearts itself. ie, if Heartless take Kingdom Hearts , all worlds in teh game would be plunged into darkness and flooded with Heartless, opening unique gathering resources, unique enemies and bosses, etc. No one faction can hold it indefinetely, as the other two can team up temporarily to usurp the current holder, then afterwards turn on each other.
Legend of Zelda: Have Hyrule, Holodrum, Labrynna, Koholint Island (with a dungeon where you must keep the Wind FIsh asleep or the Island goes bye-bye), the Dark World/Sacred Realm, the Twilight Realm, Termina, and any other place I may have missed. Maybe have it possible to visit the Temple of Time and travel to the different stages of Hyrule's history, such as Skyward Sword's Hyrule, Wind Waker's flooded Hyrule and Legend of Zelda's (seemingly) barren and desolate Hyrule.
Elder Scrolls: Combine Skyrim with the rest of the landmass, ie Morrowind and wherever Oblivion takes places (I forgot the name). Make it large like Star Wars Galxies to allow payer housing and grand exploration. Instant win.
Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim: One of my favorite games of all time. If you aren't familiar with it, it is a city-building game (like an RTS but not focused solely on military conquest) where you play a Soveriegn of a fledgling medieval hgh-fantasy kingdom. The kicker here is you don't actually control any of your hero units, they run around and basically play an RPG on their own, you cna nly influence them with bounties and reward flags.
Anyway, the gist is for an MMO you get to play as one of those heroes. The religions and deities would be one of your greatest choices as a character, an would be where the faction conflict arises. IE: If you have a temple to Dauros or Agrela you can't have one to Krypta or Fervus. I see teh whole continent as a large conquerable territory, but more through influence and deeds of the heroes than outright conquest. Look into the original game, it has so much potential as an MMO.
Pokemon: Hit the nail on the head with the OP. Action combat with dodge/evade/blocks combined with the types and resistances of Pokemon. Not just combat either, with the new pageants and musicals and parades of the new games there would be somethign for everyone. Don't forget breeding. Also with every region available, with battle towers, and possibly guild versions of the Elite Four and tournaments. And instead of catching Legendary Pokemon, they are world raid bosses. ie. Kyogre has appeared and is rampaging about the oceans, if he is not stopped it will rain forever without end, the coastlines will become uninhabitable or something, it'd be great.
Also, player characters part of Team Rocket/Galaxy/Aqua/Magma :P
- Asterix: ??? I have no clue how this is supposed to work ???
Gaulish being the default playable faction, pve being questing in the forests (what forests! enchanting game world), killing wild boars and the occasional roman gives extra boosts. Also big fights against chieftains/encampments/legions being required frequently, or having the village destroyed if one cannot do so and requiring the players to hide out in the forest and work from scratch again building stuff, fighting romans and stealing from their encampments.
pvp can be quite lighthearted fights set in market places or banquets, throwing fish at each other.
magic potion being a certain boost.
It would be fun and lighthearted, not a serious mmorpg. But I would play it. It could have good and simple character modelling, good emoting based on the comics which are very well emoted.
Could go off set across the sea, interact with pirates, make a fortune in rome or choose to stay near a village and defend/drink/eat have fun.
it would be very lighthearted because the book is, but could have good game mechanics in terms of abilities and generally a rather entertaining and immersive world.
If they stay true to the world in the comics, a rather alternative but quite viable and enjoyable mmorpg is possible feel, based around the charming world which, tbh, never gets old.
I'm always affraid to name specific worlds that are dear to me. Asterix would be great, but I would hate if they ruined it.
It's sort of like movies, I LOVE TinTin and thank God that the movie coming out is getting good reviews on pre-shows, or I would be disappointed they're "ruining my childhood!!11" lol.
5. that 18th/19th century steam-punk "19th century technology meets magic" setting I have in mind, a bit like in "Arcanum". Or imagine the Shadowrun setting just with 19th century background not 21st century.

Damn I forgot about Feists work, and I have met the man many years ago. But that would take my lists to 6 and two fantasy MMO's....at this point dunno if my mind could handle that....
Fight for contorl of Planet Arakis. "Those who control the spice control the universe." (open PvP Planet)
Spice as combat booster, spice gas to travel through space, spice melange as "Mana" for Mentats.
The Dune universe practically screams MMO!
Wow, you got me. It's been so long that I practically forgot about Dune. Dang it. You're right, With all the different houses it would be a pvp free for all.
And all works from 'Tactical Studies Rules' as well... Yeah, Gary knew how to make RPG's back then. Hard to graps what he meant (lausy writer), but the mechanics were awesome!

1. Shadowrun (PnP)
2. Rifts (PnP)
3. Fallout
4. Mechwarrior (PnP...oh hell even some of the pc games )
5. Forgotten Realms (cause at some point I won't be tired of fantasy mmos anymore)

Hm. Ok here are mine:
1. Faerun D&D (as open world)
2. Traveller P&P Rpg
3. The Dark Eye (a german P&P rpg)
4. Midkemia
5. that 18th/19th century steam-punk "19th century technology meets magic" setting I have in mind, a bit like in "Arcanum". Or imagine the Shadowrun setting just with 19th century background not 21st century.

5. Call
4. of
3. Cthulhu
2. by
1. H.P. Lovecraft
REALITY CHECK
All excellent choices if done correctly.
1. Warhammer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs79s8sNWlY
To this day it baffles me how Mythic failed with their game after making DaoC.
Warhammer made as a multiple factions MMO would be simply amazing.
2. Starcraft
I know it's blizzard, but it is an amazing setting.
3. Planescape Torment
Really hard to market, but again, such an amazing setting.
4. D&D: Faerun (Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter)
Probably one of the best sandbox settings.
5. Mechwarrior
But taken in a different direction of EVE.
Overall I prefer sandbox gameplay, but understand that each game/setting may fit in one better than the other.
1. Greyhawk (sandbox)
2. Stargate (themepark/lobby based)
3. Ultima Online 2
4. Firefly
5. Underworld
<p align="center" style="font-family: arial;"><a href="http://www.wizards.com/magic/playmagic/whatcolorareyou.asp" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/whatcolor_isblue.jpg" border="0"><br/><b>Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.</b></a></p>
DUNE!
Seriously? 7 Pages and not one mention of DUNE! Makes a perfect MMO:
Faction PvP (Atreides, Harkonnen, Imperial Sardaukar, Tleilaxu, Fremen, Navigators Guild, Bene Geseriy)
Fight for contorl of Planet Arakis. "Those who control the spice control the universe." (open PvP Planet)
Spice as combat booster, spice gas to travel through space, spice melange as "Mana" for Mentats.
The Dune universe practically screams MMO!
I am so on-board with Pokemon. Rather than that here is my list:
- League of Legends (Love to see an MMORTS based on that)
- Civilization (Love to see an MMO based on that)
- Digimon
- Naruto
- One piece
TOP MMORPG GAMES
Damn I forgot about Feists work, and I have met the man many years ago. But that would take my lists to 6 and two fantasy MMO's....at this point dunno if my mind could handle that....
Wow, you got me. It's been so long that I practically forgot about Dune. Dang it. You're right, With all the different houses it would be a pvp free for all.
House Atreides or House Harkonnen?
5 Pokemon - I liked the games & it's something my kids loved too.
4 Discworld - best chance at a "comedy MMO"
3 Elder Scrolls - just because Morrowind onwards have felt so massive in scope
2 Planescape: Torment - for me the most engaging "universe" of all of the D&D themes I've played.
1 Dune - just because I loved the books so damn much it hurts.
I would have added World of Darkness but CCP are working on it, similarly SOE's EverQuest (Next / 3)
5) Harry potter- trust me being a death eater would be sic
4) Greyhawk- seeing how cryptic is going to ruin neverwinter. its the next best thing
3) Firefly - cowboys in space ftw
2) Elder Scrolls - playing skyrim atm and god i wish it was a mmo
1) Dune - Dr. Kynes: Bless the maker and his water, bless the coming and going of him, may his passing cleanse the world.
Well thats my 5 and we will never see a mmo from any of them.
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
And all works from 'Tactical Studies Rules' as well... Yeah, Gary knew how to make RPG's back then. Hard to graps what he meant (lausy writer), but the mechanics were awesome!
Harry Potter would make a great MMO, if done right! That's a good idea.
