Desktop vs Laptop

Quick question:

Is a laptop good for playing games?

I plan to get a laptop, 1 gb of Ram 2.66 GHZ Pent. 4 Processor... $1400

Is it worth it? or should I just get a desktop for the same price?

That seems like a good machine,  but you also have to remember that the laptop is always going to be a little slower in a lot of things.  The videocard usually isn't as good.  If you go to Alienware and look at their laptops,  they are as good as a desktop.

But to answer your question,  yes...   you can play games,  but if you're not going to take your laptop anywhere,  I would suggest getting a desktop.

That all depends, if you travel a lot then a laptop is for you.  Otherwise go for a desktop.  Reasons:  personally i hate laptop keyboards I need a raised button to click and it just feels more natural wich makes for better gaming, unless you are really good with a touch pad you will always have to cary a mouse around with your laptop, you probably wont be able to get very good resolution out of your laptop display, and my main reason is the shere ammount of heat that i would produce when playing a game.

I have a desktop and laptop. my Desktop is a 2 Gig athlon, ge force 4 4200, while my Laptop is a 1.8 gig P4 GeForce 440 Go!... Now there both great machines, but you have to remeber, they sarifice some power to make laptops how they are. Also for MMO's the smaller keyboard can really get in the way after a couple hours playing. I love my laptop, and take it everywhere, but for games i also tend to gravitate back to my Desktop. In general, laptops are great machine, but desktops are better.. imo!

You can game on them and you can play most mmrpg smooth enough but a desktop will always be better unless you plan to travel a lot and play.

For same price you can always get a better computer and for 1400 you will get a very good graphics card with that system in a desktop like radeon 9700pro,ti4600 or even a radeon 9800pro depends where you shop.

Also the screen will be a cause of drag because it can't keep up which also applies to  many flat screens(so might want to consider buying normal screen or a top range flat screen if going desktop).

The resolution will hamper the game play too.

I would not assume what graphics card isin a 1.4k system but chances are it is a savage or intergrated card of some sort .

Alienware sells top line laptops and theirs is like 3k dollars which has a radeon 9000 in it .

Top line cards are not used in laptops purely because of their size and it is nearly impossible at current to build them smaller and without actually comprimising  their performance(i have a post somewhere where i explained some people can't fit top end desktop cards into their case because of their size).

If you plan on playing newer MMO on it forget it.Older ones possible but performance might not be too good.

First person shooters all i know playable(alienware says half life 2 will play on their radeon 9000 laptop easy) but in FPS your response is critical and this again will be not good with a laptop.

My advise unless the laptop is needed for moving around and for carrying about for work forget it and get a descent desktop.

Oh and get a athlon xp if going desktop as they are faster and cheaper .Any speed will do honestly but since processors are so cheap might as well go for a athlon 2600 or above.

1gb is good trust me games nowadays eat RAM like hell .Planetside and SWG will lag no matter what card you use unless you got 768 or more.

Oh by the way Cohh how does the laptop handle MMO games and which ones.Just intrested.

I'll be using mine for work, school, and gaming... So it'll get a lot of use and travel... Should I stick with the laptop? I think it's a good laptop for it's price, made by Toshiba. I only have $1400 to spend. I turn 16 in January, so I'm lucky I got a job now. It ends in 1 1/2 weeks however... image

For $1500 USD you can get a pretty good PC... 3GHz, etc.  For $1500 USD,  you can get a decent laptop...

As for my avatar,  I made it.  image

A laptop would be better if you travel alot or if you are just lazy. But remember laptops are slower so if you don't intend on traveling alot go for a desktop.
