I happen to be following TSW on Facebook, and I noticed that they posted several BRAND NEW game website media previews last week that aren't getting much discussion here. Prior to reading these, I had interest in TSW going all the way back to 2007-2008, but I didn't think much of it because I was watching other games like SWTOR and GW2. These previews are fantastic news, as the press widely agreed that the game is beautiful, exctiting, non-linear, and a general breath of well-needed fresh air.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Still not sure what to think about this one. It all sounds very very good.
But then you hear "Funcom" and the doubting starts.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
The more I hear about the game, the better it sounds. I'm looking forward to seeing how it comes out.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Thanks for that., I was thinking of reading some of those previews; I could not get to it between Skyrim + weekend SWTOR beta test.
This is one I've been following solely because of my admiration for Ragnar's previous work. Looks good, sounds good and I'm hoping against hope that it will play good and have depth as well.
Based on what I know so far, I'm definitely trying this game.
So it's Funcom and the screwed up in the past; who hasn't?
TBH I'd rather risk 50 bucks on this than any of the other crap due for release (GW2 aside).
I actually think this would be a great game to play along side GW2, if I can find the time.
Darn site more interesting than the current sacred cow that's doing the rounds.

thanks for tossin all these links together.
been watchin this game, and it's nice to see some more updates and walkthroughs.
You're welcome. I'm really following this much closer now, especially after my experience with SWTOR being lackluster. The fact is, I need something more like this game, or a full-on sandbox. SWTOR proves that I am not in the least, a themepark player. I'm happy for those who are. I am not.
As for Funcom screwing up, I was there. The biggest mistake they made was being silent for weeks while people were reporting issues. They basically burned their player base from day one, not because of the game's flaws, but because they didn't communicate. I'm quite sure they have learned their lesson and Ragnar has said as much.
Also, these are two different teams of people. Ragnar's game is not the same game as AoC. The engine (which has been highly modified) shares roots in AoC, but the game and the dev team are different. I'm willing to give Ragnar a shot, and it sounds like he's really on to something here.

I hope it IS a good game. If there's anything better than having one awesome MMO to play, it's having 2 awesome MMO's to play.
I do really hope they deliver with TSW, I also hope that TSW will not be the next "WoW-killer".
I want a steady, dedicated, small community, around 100k-200k should be a reasonable expectation for a niche-title like TSW.
I am of the opinion that there is a lack in smaller, focused, niche-MMOs (not korean f2p shovelware mind you) that specialize in a specific aspect.
This was a title I was looking forward to earlier, but a staff article with commetns here on mmorpg.com made me lose interest for two reasons:
1. The game will have a built-in web browser. Not because it's convenient, but because it's a *must* to be able to check wikis or whatever for hints to the puzzles.
2. Sub fee AND cash shop? No thanks.
I'm keeping an eye on this. It could be something I pick up after it's been out a couple of months. I like Funcoms ideas, but I'm not always a fan of their execution.
lol, they talked a lot about the in-game browser, and it is just for the fun, how can it be a "must" if isn't even confirmed it is going to be in the game, the devs are thinking about it yet... I hope they manage to put it in the game.
We know that they expect us that we will need the assistance of google to solve some puzzles and do a little research. I like that, and I like the idea of way to do that in-game to avoid breaking immersion. Having a smartphone or tablet available for your character to use, or perhaps visiting an internet cafe or library, would be a great way to accomplish this.
As for the Sub fee AND cash shop? As a developer, that worries me. The outcry is unsurprising, and I am anxious to see what comes of it.
Al i know is that once open beta starts this game is going to be bashed into ground. One of the main reason being Funcom behind it and secondly there are very big chances that keeping up with their past reputation, game launch wiill have more bugs than starship troopers. Time will tell how far this positive impreesions will help TSW in long run..
Yeah for all those people who keep saying give FunCom another chance all I got to say is Age of Conan (AoC)....Once bitten twice shy is the saying I believe....I will wait for the YouTube beta videos of TSW to make my decision versus so-called game insiders....
I've seen this same sentiment repeated across various forums. Do you think Funcom will ever be able get past the bad reputation? There are so many good ideas in this game, but it seems even an independent studio would get a better reception than Funcom.
AoC suffered a bum launch, but they really made some improvements to the genre, and did alot of things well. IF Funcom manages to learn from their mistakes, then TSW could be really good. I'm still glad to see there is alot of positive write ups on it.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
I think it is because AO is known to be mother of bad launches and after 6 years of experince and time to learn from their mistakes players expected an improvement from Funcom. But they messed up AOC too and everyone was really frustrated. Not to mention the features that were printed on back of the box are still missing from the game.
I would rather buy product from companies which under promise and over deliver instead of companies who over promise and never deliver.
Wrong.
It IS going to be in the game.
SBFord, here at mmorpg.com, played the game, and writes:
"Speaking of Google, it’s going to be huge in the game. Because of the way the developers have crafted The Secret World, there isn’t necessarily a straight line running from the quest NPC and the place to solve that quest. There are obscure references to conspiracy theories that players will have to look up on Google. In fact, developers have plans to have an in-game capability for players to access Google for research to help them finish quests. Now how cool is that?"
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/404/feature/5830/page/2
She also writes this in comment #11 in the discussion:
"If you look a bit closer, I was told that there will be a way to use Google within the game. It wasn't in the build I played but it's definitely going in. It makes sense too. Since this is "real world", it's exactly what we would do if we needed to figure out a puzzling clue."
So far the reviews look great but because its Failcom....err Funcom and because some of the videos ive seen shows very jerky character animations I am holding off any hype whatsoever. Funcom has to deliver and from their last 2 titles they havnt earned any amount of hype IMO.

Yes those are called investigation missions and are a small portion of the game's quests for those who want to immerse themselves in the world to a larger degree. You are in no way forced to do these quests and you will not be crippled because you dont do them.
Many quests are set up that if you want to dig deeper into the backstory you are free to do so. From a Developer:
''The thing about the lore is that, say you come into a house and have a mission that takes place there. The mission will tell you 50% of the storyline, but there are always more clues. If you’re interested in the story behind the house and how it ties into The Secret World, there will be clues all around the house that you can pick up and plug into a system. One by one, they piece together the story, giving the full version – why people are there, why it is haunted. There is more behind the scenes to dive into''.
Believe me there are people paying attention, and luckily they aren't the mass heard of MMO jumpers that are drooling over shallow cookie cutter copy paste games.
It really says something when you take this many industry professional gamers/critics/writers and these are the results you get. Just read the last paragraph of every impression.
I have been excited for this game for a long time now and I constantly have to keep my hype in check. The best possible thing for Funcom would be for this to keep flying under the radar right up until launch. The hype train has backfired for... every MMO?
I think this game can grow like EVE did, small and under the radar at first but growing constantly through word of mouth. As other players get bored of their mindless shallow grind games they will jump over and try it and I don't think they will look back. I really hope this is the game that breaks the mold and the rut we have been in for all these years.
From the When Lovecraft Met Google article:
At the end of the day, The Secret World is aspiring to do things and to go places that we haven't seen yet in most MMORPGs. The developers are forcing players to think outside of the box, to create the characters that they want to play with, and to allow themselves to get wrapped up in a story that history buffs are sure to get a kick out of. It's an intellectual MMO served with a small side of zombies and magic that's hitting exclusively for the PC in 2012.
Right up my alley. It's not my business to tell other people what to do with their time and money, but a game like this buys Funcom another chance as far as I'm concerned. Plus I still think they're going to have a good launch this time.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Yeah and since they are using the engine that AoC basically alpha/beta'd they should have a lot of those issues with the core engine taken care of already. With AoC it was pretty brand spanking new. I think they will deliver, and 3rd times a charm. I like what you said though, 'a game like this buys Funcom another chance...'.
Seeing as how I bought the year sub to AoC back when it was offering free TSW beta access, I should be guranteed to get into beta at some point, which is good because I'm looking forward to it.
But I will have to agree, the main reason I stopped playing AoC was because of Funcom and their just extremely slow rollouts of updates to fix crucial issues. While the game has made massive improvements since launch, they still sit around for weeks at a time sometimes and just dont fix glaring issues like the mass number of PvP problems that existed.
Also the cash shop + sub has me extremely worried. The fact that they talked about it this early shows they are already probably doing what Cryptic did, and that is cutting out content from the game so that it can go into the cash shop.
I hope I'm wrong with this as it is a game that interest me very much.

I have been looking forward to TSW for awhile now. I think it breathes some much needed life in to this very stale and stagnant genre of gaming. I'm looking forward to getting more info as time goes on.
