It's sad how a bunch of D&D kids can get pissed off when a better game is going to come out and smash the shit out of all the little roll playing games. "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!"
Since there is no PvE, how can there be any RPG...
This game is clearly an MMOFPS game. So why is it listed as an MMORPG?
What is your beef, buddy? Why do you have to be such a hater? I just don't get it.
Plus, where is it written in stone that an RPG needs to have PvE? Can't they also be pure PvP? I'm sure you know people that primarily play PvP in their MMOs.
As for "quests", the devs have already talked about their "mission" system which are essentially quests, except since there is no AI, it won't be the old and tired - collect 5 boar tongues. It will be more like - capture this tower over on a ridge.
And really, guy, everybiody knows RP stands for Role Playing, and there was plenty of that in the original Planetside. Heck, SOE hired Marv Wolfman (they guy that did DCUO) to write lore for Planetside 2 which they have been releasing over the last month or so. A deeper lore kinda lends itself to more RPing, no?
True that Planetside 2 is much more MMOFPS, but it certainly has a good amount of classic RPG elements and let's face it, MMOFPS is not a very populated genre...yet.
Also, I'm fairly new to this site, I didn't know you were a mod that is the vanguard of what should or shouldn't be discussed on this great site. Don't hate, don't feel threatened. Try checking it out and keep it on your radar and see if it might be a game you could enjoy. It looks like it's going to accomidate many different play styles. You may find one you really like.
Lot's of new accounts boosting hype? Do they have the right to hype when they hit rank 5? They do. I haven't seen anywhere, that as a new member on these boards I'm only allowed to follow the taste of long-time members.
Problem?
If it is problem for anyone, let me know, or rather, let the staff know, appeal for a new system where you can alter lower ranked members hype score, make a barrier of level 100 - oh wait, this is not supposed to happen. We are as much a member here as you are.
Period.
On the RPG-nonRPG arguments.
As a long time P&P, cRPG, MMORPG and Planetside player I must say that Planetside is as much an RPG as any other game I've played. RPG is not meant to be stats only. Actually, stats are the least important thing in an RPG.
Why are you a Paladin, a Tauren chieften, Dovakiin or Vault Dweller or a CR5 (high ranking commander in Planetside)? Is your purpose based on the available skillset, equipment, magic, whatever? Or you want to play that role actively?
Planetside's ranking system means that you have access to wider set of equipment at a time. A low level soldier's skillset (selected by the player) meant he is very specialized to be an infiltrator or a tank driver or a medic or a heavy grunt with dangerously looking weapons. A high level character had the skillset to fill these roles all, changing his equipment to adapt to the situation given.
You can expect on the battlefield that a character wiht a repair tool or a medic applicator will actually repair things or heal others. Actively. A pilot will fight for air superiority (while dedicated anti-air people were hunting them from the sky) or provide cover for bombers and air-transport. People were playing their roles.
Those with sufficent command rank make their best to figure out the next targets, calling for reinforcement, prioritizing and generally kicking each and every soldier's butt (and each others' too) when not acting properly.
Clans (called "outfits") gathered in squads and platoons, most of them having their preffered playstyle and fighting accordingly. They have their chain of command, tactics and procedures and a high level of teamplay and self-sacrifice was required in even the loosest ones.
People playing Planetside have always been playing their roles. Their roles in the game, their roles in their clans. We are more of a roleplayer than many maxed level gamer in any clickfest, grinding MMO.
Besides. Planetside is at least really MMO - and although it is considered an FPS, it is even MMO and a bit of RTS too.
Don't be a hater for the community of the game does the best to attract people to a new and genial genre. We haven't came to ruin your games or lower the hype or whatever? We are not spamming other forums with Planetside2's expected awesomeness.

How can I accept you into the community when your user name is call Trolltaxi, I don't like trolls
As to your comment on clickfest MMO, pretty sure Planetside 2 will need you to click more than normal MMO lol :P
Do I care if it is a RPG or not, no
If its fun, I'll play it, if it isn't, well too bad, Firefall is going to take the MMOFPS spot for me, the game has already shown gameplay, open world PvE and PvP
sooooooo yea Firefall is before Planetside 2 for me right now
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

But seriously firefall is in beta now, it wasment to release now, they're way ahead of PS2 in terms of development. from the gameplay seen though and whats been said it will be a tactical shooter, there is no prone though and heavier close range weapons willbe COF based.
typically people dont relate clicking the mouse to shoot as the same as clicking to move or clicking spells(if you're that n00b) though, so by that definition clicking would be minimal in PS2 and firefall too.

THe point is that, I don't get why anyone would call mmorpg a clickfest, sure it is a grindfest, but not a clickfest. People can hate all they want, but at least hate with reason and facts, you hardly click in a MMO.
As for Firefall having more time to develop and show gameplay, isn't that the whole point of this thread? Planetside 2 simply does not have enough development time behind it to be logically hype like this.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Well since Planetside 2 is a sequel, in alot of ways Planetside 1 players know more about what to expect than players waiting for Firefall. I'm looking forward to Firefall, but based on the vids and screenshots released, I can't really say much more than its got Borderlands graphics, TF2 classes, and Jetpacks. I have no idea what it might feel like to play.
So this is an MMOFPS? Pass. Doesn't look like a bad game, I just don't like the style. Still, I hope it is a good game for all those that are interested.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
As for Firefall having more time to develop and show gameplay, isn't that the whole point of this thread? Planetside 2 simply does not have enough development time behind it to be logically hype like this.
Well then when is the proper time for someone to hype it then? I mean if someone is not sure and reserving judgement, wouldn't they also reserve their hype vote? And if someone is extremely excited by what they know from the original game combined with the screenshots, videos, and direct communications with the developers, shouldn't they be allowed to express that excitement now? The game is being released in 2012. Now seems as good a time as any to start getting hyped.
As for FireFall, it looks great too. It's a totally different game, but it looks awesome. I hope both of these are great successes. I don't see this as an either / or question. I'd like to see both these games expand the MMO market in general.

what do you mean by style?
Graphics, gameplay or just the whole MMOFPS world pvp deal?

Well i dont know about other people but i look at the games coming out and Planetside is the only thing that looks majorly refreshing, it might be verymuch like the original, but planetside 2, its the only MMOFPS since Planetside. I'm not sure about firefall but the devs have said its not an MMOFPS, i guess that means we will see more arena style PvP thats avalible in every other shooter? It does look good though, certainly a refreshing MMO but im not going to get excited about it, it could be unplayble. I dont trust any other MMO developer except SOE when it comes to netcode, especially in an action environment.
We know panetside 2 will keep the core fundamentals of the original with 3 factions and massive contents, they say now that continents can support thousands of players. they have scrapped the lattice system for a Hex system and added resources and more involved levelling system than the original to provide an individual goal and global empire goal.
The grapics of planetside look simply amazing, on par with BF3 and are up there with crysis 3 engine. the character detail and textures are just insane.
The combat willbe much like BFBC2, tactical shooter, while im not the largest fan of tactical shooters its has some scifi elements like player regenerating shields and it does have COF based close range weaponry. it does away with prone(or is supposed to)
the question is why would you not be excited about what SOE has installed for us with Planetside 2, instead of Fantasy RPG #12454: feat: instanced battlegrounds, holy trinity, mob grinding and 3rd world graphics.
Guild wars 2 is the only thing that is looking to break that mould, i thought originally SWTOR was, but alas thats not the case.
And nobody is blind hyping, most of the people that would be hyping this game are names I recognise from PS1. (which means like me they're following every piece of development and information released)
I won't break in tears if another Kingdom states it doesn't like trolls!
Trolls don't cry.
No need to hate the game though just because it doesn't fit in your ideas about the RPG genre. I just simply don't understand why you care? Why are you investening energy into protesting against a game? We are here FOR something, you are AGAINST something.
Be positive! Makes your skin even smoother! :trollmode off:
So this is an MMOFPS? Pass. Doesn't look like a bad game, I just don't like the style. Still, I hope it is a good game for all those that are interested.
Could you give us your definition (or previous bad experiences) with MMOFPS game styles? I would like to be enlightened. Reason I ask is because there are very few MMOFPS titels that ever came out.
The people who are hyping are the people who played the first game and know its potential, and have been waiting for planetside 2 for years and years and years and years. And all the information thats out for it right now leads us to believe that its going to be exactly what we wanted out of PS2. This is going to be the greatest game ever made.
There are reams of information and a lot of the basic premise and mechanics of the game a lot of art and a TON of answered questions via twitter. Besides, 3000 player battles simultniously? Who needs to know more than that?
That sounds awesome for the PVP folks. I was under the impression FPS games these days have like 64 vs 64 matches on PC, and about half that size on console.
If they really do have this many, I can see it taking a number of PVP folks out of other games.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

I'm very sceptical that they can support their claimed "thousands" i do beleive they have the technology to support around a thousand though. even so, the contents are the same size as PS1, even with 400 people on them, they were pretty packed.

Because it's not a third-person copy and paste point and click smash key's 1-9 crap game that's the same as ALL other mmos.
